Appeal Court Sets June 3 Hearing in High-Stakes Accord Party Leadership Dispute

The internal crisis rocking Accord Party Nigeria has continued to deepen, raising concerns over the stability, unity and future of the party ahead of the 2027 political season.

At the centre of the dispute is an ongoing legal battle over the authentic national leadership of the party, with two factions laying claim to control of the party structure.

The matter, currently before the Federal High Court in Abuja, involves a leadership tussle between Chris Imumolen and Maxwell Mgbudem following controversies surrounding the party’s 2024 National Convention and subsequent leadership arrangements.

The crisis has resulted in parallel structures operating within the party, creating confusion among members, stakeholders and political observers across the country.

The faction loyal to Prof. Imumolen insists it possesses a valid and subsisting court order recognising its authority, while accusing the Independent National Electoral Commission of failing to properly acknowledge what it describes as the lawful leadership of the party.

Meanwhile, the opposing faction has continued to challenge the development through ongoing legal proceedings.

The counsel to Maxwell, which approached the Court of Appeal seeking a reversal of the Federal High Court ruling that granted an application to amend the case, is scheduled for hearing on June 3, 2027. The Federal High Court is also said to be awaiting the outcome of the appeal proceedings before determining the next stage of its process.

Political analysts believe the final court judgment could have far-reaching implications for the future of the party, particularly regarding decisions, appointments, congresses and nominations carried out under the disputed leadership structures.

Observers warn that until the judiciary delivers a conclusive pronouncement, uncertainty may continue to overshadow the party’s preparations and internal cohesion.

With tensions rising and members increasingly divided along factional lines, questions are being raised over whether the party can effectively position itself for future electoral contests without first resolving its internal leadership dispute.

As the legal battle moves closer to a final resolution, attention remains fixed on the courts and what the outcome could mean for the future of Accord Party Nigeria.
