Transcript that should be on student portal that they can download anytime. If an education institution is still living in 1920, how will the country move forward
I agree with you. The transcript should be on the student's portal.

Obvious you haven't seen beyond your nose..
Some schools within and outside Nigeria make it available for students online.
Such always have "student's copy" watermarked on it.
That student copy cannot be used for official purpose. You that have seen beyond your nose, do not know this.

Maybe, but back in my time, this is like 16 years or more ago, when I was applying for a masters at another uni, my university sent the transcript to them, and they did not give me a copy. (Then again, the uni is one of nigeria's older universites, so they probably did things the old way).

Times might have changed.
It is still the standard practice today. Forget what that one is saying. Let him mention the school that gives transcript meant for official purpose to students

This is not correct.
Institutions have to ensure transcripts remain authentic and resistant to manipulation or fraud. The process require verification layers that a student cannot just download.
.

I studies in Europe and Uk at some of the best universities. We received our transcript as part of our final year result. Infact, I got home one week after exams and found a big evelope with my exam result, my certificate, transcript, and testmonial.
You definitely don't know what you are talking about.

I actually have two nephews I am sponsoring at that school. This is giving kind of concern now because I had the impression this school may be different.

Very bad attempt at damage control..if you had just released the damn student copy of the transcript we wouldn’t have been in such a situation, now the world knows schools to avoid because of how they treat their own students, what a shame.

People will NOT do what is expected of them until problem comes up to cause serious damage. I’d advice the school management to investigate and sack all the people who are involved in this scandal especially the one the woman said told her they couldn’t release her daughter to go like that,This Country Nigeria is so really messed up,imagine the level of blackmail everywhere, when they say Nigeria is cursed people don’t seem to understand or take it seriously.

I will not comment about the issue itself, as I generally do not take sides on issues for which I have limited information. However, just in case representatives of the university read this, I want to highlight that the world of education has changed. Students are always entitled to their transcripts, and should easily be able to download them without the need for any serious procedures.

For the two Nigerian university certificates I have, getting my transcripts was a hassle. Even till today, people request to use my office as their destination to retrieve their own transcripts as their universities would not send it to them directly. This practice is simply meaningless!

For my degrees from Europe, I have always had access to my transcripts without any protocols or requests. For my MSc in France, I was sent the transcripts by email as soon as each session was over- no requests. I could also download them from the school portal. For my PhD in Finland, they've always been on the portal. The document is updated as I completed course and earn each ECTS and can be downloaded for free anytime I wish.

And no, its not marked "student". I easily send the transcripts to people and organizations and can apply for opportunities at will.

To be clear, this is not to castigate Maduka university which i have never studied in. It is rather to encourage Nigerian universities that the world of education has moved far beyond this unproductive system.

A transcript is not national security data and any organizations that prefer to confirm with the school can make such requests. Bodies like WES will request that it is sent directly from the school. But this does not invalidate the right of the student to have their transcripts for use at any time, and in any way they so wish.
This is entirely true, as I received my transcript and certificate in the mail on the same day without requesting for them. I'm referring to an experience from 17 years ago at a foreign university.

Who made the law?

Na so una go de normalize nonsense.

A tuition paying student should have access to thier transcript (student copy).

It's theirs for goodness sake.... abi na school write the exams for the student?

What exactly is the logic behind this archaic practice?

Except in cases where the receiving institution expressly request that it comes directly from the school you are transferring out.

Also, Maduka university failed to clearly address the 2m payment request for transcript in thier rebuttal because what do you mean 2m for transcript?

This thing is quite easy,if they requested for student copy of the transcript which is different from the specialized official copy dispatched to directed offices for use,it will be paid for, most schools use DHL for it.

Nigerians are usually impatient and love cutting corners,I have been availed my transcript twice, there was no hiccups with process.

The reason they are been strict with it is because they make money from the sales of transcripts which they can charge as high as 100k to 50k depending on the school. I recently went to my school that is supposed to be am academic institutions patterned to a particular university in the USA, they asked me to pay 50k for transcripts. The questions I asked them is this, this records are mine, I paid my school fee during my time with the school, so why the hassle to get a personal copy, I was told that the school usually writes to them and they send it directly to the schools and it comes with a fee.
All this are just greed and nothing else.

When I requested for transcript, I was lucky, the officer gave it to me to photocopy (as a favour), so I have it. But even when u use it to apply to university, they will still demand for the original, so u still have to go back to the school and pay for them to send it to the school.

Re: Re: Non-issuance Of Student Official Transcript:The Maduka University’s Position by GerogeI(m): 1:55pm On May 23
If a University is preventing a student handicapped by fees from leaving, it is sabotage, plain and simple. If a student is no longer capable of finance, the University as a responsible organisation should be aiding him or her to continue their education either via scholarshi loan or moving somewhere else.

While Official communication of transcripts is from institution to institution. Every student has a right to own and see the records in the transcript before it is sent out. And that's why the University must first Issue a student copy of transcripts on Termination of study. The only reason for institutional to institution transmission is to avoid tampering.

However, this authentication requirement can also be achieved by simply going to the public notary at your local court. And notarize a copy of your student copy transcript. Most responsible Universities will accept a notarized copy because the court official has certified it as an exact copy.

So next time you request for transcript, ask for students copy, it should be free cause you earned it via your school fees

This is a big issue for Nigerians abroad. For instance, when one want to do a skill assessment, transcript would be required to determine suitability.
This is not an institution but for you as an individual.
It's not only school that need a transcript and that's where our institutions have been myopic.
They shouldn't be afraid to give students their results.
The system should be made easy to dictate fake transcripts as well as we also see abroad.

I belive our institutions know what to do but rather choose to remain docile.
