Secondary School Student Goes to School With a Cutlass for Self-Protection in Oyo(Video)

Fear and tension have continued to spread across parts of Oyo State after a secondary school student was reportedly seen going to school with a cutlass for self-protection following recent bandit attacks in Oriire Local Government Area.

The incident comes days after gunmen reportedly attacked schools in the Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota communities in Oriire LGA, abducting dozens of pupils, students and teachers. Reports said more than 40 persons were kidnapped during the attacks, which have left many residents living in fear.

A video circulating on social media showed the student walking in school uniform while carrying the cutlass, reportedly out of fear of another possible attack. The development has sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the worsening insecurity affecting schools in the state.

Parents and community members have continued to call on the government and security agencies to strengthen security around schools and communities in Ogbomoso and other affected areas.

The recent attacks in Oriire Local Government Area have raised fresh concerns over the safety of students and teachers, especially in rural communities where residents say they feel vulnerable to further attacks.

If the cutlass will help give this man some peace of mind, then the school authorities should allow him to bring it to school.

He probably knows that the cutlass would not be an effective weapon against terrorist gunmen, however, if he has to flee into the bush in the event that the approach of attackers is heard, then the cutlass will enable him to cut a path of escape through the bush that he and his friends can use to make good their escape.

Very good development. Self defense is a fundamental human right. It is your right as a human being. Don't let APC government or Bwala tell you that you need government permission to defend yourself.

Even in what you see as his foolishness,it will surprise you to know that he is far wiser than your leaders. And goes to show your kind of person as a follower too. At least the child is willing to protect himself,what are you doing to protect your self,when it comes to your doorstep?

It is a welcome development since the president prefers to just relax, take cocaine and create different tax laws to suck out the remaining money Nigerians have left. To hell with the safety of everyone.

When I started a farm, I bought a taser and military-type pocket knife. I later found out one my farm workers keeps a dane gun (he's a member of the vigilante in that village). I know none of these can stop kidnappers if they come, but no way I'm letting these idiots take me into the bush to whip and put on YouTube. I'd go down while - hopefully - taking one of the uncivilised bastards with me.

When the police who should be protecting them are no where to be found but are taking cover somewhere while doling out instructions to citizens that self protection using guns against bandits is a crime, the young man will take the option of holding a cutlass

I don't like this one. We should rather introduce self defence into our school curriculum. Let's revive Man O'war and Boys' Scout and give them paramilitary training. We should also make combat sports like judo, karate, wrestling, UFC, taekwondo etc compulsory in our schools
