If you are seeking university admission in Nigeria, or you just gained admission to study any of these courses, and you are from a humble background, draw closer and hold your ears. Yes, I said hold your ears! Make sure you graduate with a First Class. Second Class Upper and Lower are not options.

If you know say you go graduate with 3rd Class, you better use your 100L school fees to start POS business.

Except you know that your background is solid, and you can easily start up any trade, project, or business venture, a First Class Is NOT optional; it is highly required. It will open doors for you no matter your course of study. Organizations that sponsor scholarships are not Father Christmas. They look critically at your grades.

I have listed the courses below:

1. Public Administration
2. Mass Communication
3. Microbiology
4. Linguistics
5. Zoology
6. Sociology
7. Parasitology and Entomology
8. Psychology
9. Philosophy
10. History or Religious Studies
11. International Relations
12. Political Science
13. Any Nigerian language
14. Anthropology
15. English

Someone with a First Class in the courses listed above has access to more opportunities than someone who has 2.1 or 2.2 in a professional course like Law or Engineering.

Just face the primary thing wey carry you come school. Nor let anybody whine you say school na scam. Education gives you access to opportunities, and gives you an analytical mind to judge outcomes in a complex society.
yoooooooooooooooooooou lìed, everything in Nigeria are connections, I know a friend with 3rd class in English, in 2009, he's now a custom Boss, those with 1st class and 2:1 same year are teachers in private schools

Saying a First Class in Sociology is SUPERIOR to a 2.1 in Law is DELUSIONAL.

The courses listed by the OP are some of the MOST USELESS courses anybody can study in Nigeria TODAY.
Regardless of what they graduate with.

IF you have kids, mentees or siblings looking for admission; this is a perfect list of courses to AVOID.

Unless their main target is POVERTY and UNEMPLOYMENT.

Also, getting a First Class Degree in English is almost IMPOSSIBLE.

I attended a School that's nearly 40 years old and they'd NEVER had a First Class Graduate in their English Department.
Quite true. I read English and literature. And with all my brilliance, I couldn't graduate with first class. I've never seen anyone with a first class in English. Most of my lecturers graduated with 3rd class.

I think you should remove English from the list. Some of those guys have been cashing out since 2020 from international exam bodies.

You nailed it, you see the courses he listed, are the most useless courses in Nigeria, it's a total waste of time and resources, in fact the time spent to study them should be used judiciously to rear chicken and you will make huge profit. I studied one of the listed useless course, and it's a huge regret for me, I haven't used it for once except to parade it like a newspaper document. I graduated with a 2.1 though but na better waste of resources.

Who was running it?

Eastcoastboy:
Is it Sowore and the likes that you have mentioned that are running it?

Media is a bussiness. You can build it, but the tech Is just an aspect of it. There's the art part of Media.

Because of the absence of media knowledge that's why we have bad and uncivilized journalism littered every where.

Well, obtaining a first class in those programs is not easy and is actually harder than in quantitative courses. So, for that reason, many graduates of those programs come out with second class upper and lower, and in worst cases, third classes and pass as well. Thus, many have become successful at what they do not necessarily because of their grades, but focus, pragmatism, mindset/attitude towards life and being in the right environment and exposed to the right information at the right time.

You missed one useless course that I see the students stress themselves so much over for nothing. In my undergraduate days, I had a neighbour that studied the course and this guy was always stressed and sometimes he went to school on Saturday while we were playing football in the lodge. I'm talking about Theater Arts. If you get admission for that course, you better go learn handwork than waste your time.
Everyone cannot be the same thing. Some people are good at acting and performing arts. Theater Arts is the best for them to study. They would be better thespians and skit makers.

I have told you for free. A First Class in any of the listed courses is better than a 2.1 or 2.2 in Law or Engineering.
A first class in any course is better than a 2.1 or 2.2. in another course. The issue is the presence of opportunities that course offers in a given country at a particular time. Thus, the grad with a 2.2. or 2.1 in Engineering has greater chances of getting a good bank job because the grad can easily pass aptitude tests compared to a first class in history.

It's actually difficult to make a first class in some of the courses you mentioned, and this is Nigeria, An International Relations student with a 2.1 can get a job faster than a First Class graduate of Mathematics.
lol

Sorry, but the bold is not true. The first class grad in mathematics has greater chances of getting a lucrative job in any part of the world than a 2.1 int'l grad.

Minding your business has created a tunnel vision that you don’t see how theatre arts can yield a fulfilling career even in our society where professionalism is not valued.

Instead of dissing the creative work that theatre arts enhances, you should focus on making Nollywood more appealing through greater professionalism.

I always tell my mentees that English is a very stubborn discipline to pass. All the JAMB excellent scorers that you see, when they get 80 or 90 in Mathematics and the core sciences, English will be 60 or 70 something. That's the nature of English.
But I tell you for free, English is not a useless course to study.
They are not good at English or aren't interested in studying humanities courses. You should look at those who chose Law or Public Admin; they tend to have higher English scores.

Students should study what their heads can carry.

Yes we must, since we are not focused on merit in choosing local, state and federal legislators and chairmen, governors and presidents. These public servants who fail to employ well paid workers to make services and utilities available for all.

We are rather focused on the politics of zoning and rotation to share the national cake of turn by turn corruption.

Can you see the connection between our politics versus governance dichotomy and the lack of professionalism in other areas of our society huh

He doesn’t know the cost of life, the price of the bean, of the fish, of the flour, of the rent, of the shoes and of the medicine, all depends on political decisions. The political illiterate is so stupid that he is proud and swells his chest saying that he hates politics.

The slowpoke doesn’t know that, from his political ignorance is born the prostitute, the abandoned child, and the worst thieves of all, the bad politician, corrupted and flunky of the national and multinational companies.”

Thrash.

Wouldn't know where this person posting this has his or, her information from. Or, his or, her background; more so now that 1st class is just cheap and flying about lk a common. More than anything else, a degree is far more than the paper a 1st class is put.....

Let him or, her re-think.
Re: 15 Courses In Nigeria Where First Class Is Not Optional by gudugudumeje: 8:32am On May 24
Not only 1st class alone opens doors.... Nb.
Re: 15 Courses In Nigeria Where First Class Is Not Optional by gudugudumeje: 8:45am On May 24
Sociology is by far more difficult and demanding than Law especially when well taught(apart from poor quality Sociology teaching as too commonly done now), and covered in its extents; basically, and in the applications. Law is simply delusional and in practice pitches crimes to be covered as jobs giving little or, no room for social balance.

Yet Law is too badly taught these days in our Universities in its basics; aiming at too many useless applications they seek timid ignorantly.

While Law breeds crimes and criminals in society, Sociology preserves society ethically and philosophically. Nb.

lmao! It's irresponsible to go about misleading people on baseless opinions. The 15 courses you listed are utterly useless which is why the bar for entry is low. You're better off doing apprenticeship or getting a technical degree as opposed to wasting away four years studying courses that leads nowhere.

As a hiring manager, there's no way I'll consider hiring someone with a first class in any of the above courses over someone with a 2:1 in more demanding courses like Accounting, Economics, Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics etc.
