Normally this won't be up for discussion but since we are inundated with Biafra revisionist liars like Gidgiddy and co who claim it was Gowon and not Ironsi that abolished regions , there is need to keep the liars at bay and the dwindling flames of truth that they want to blow out. Decree No. 1 of 1966, officially known as the Constitution (Suspension and Modification) Decree, was the first legal instrument issued by Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi following Nigeria's first military coup on January 15, 1966 It effectively suspended the 1963 Constitution and transferred all executive, legislative, and judicial powers to the military government, marking the beginning of military rule in Nigeria. Key Provisions and Impact 1. Suspension of the Constitution: The decree suspended the 1963 Constitution, leaving the military government with the authority to govern by decree without legislative oversight or parliamentary debate. 2. Concentration of Power: It established the Supreme Military Council as the highest decision-making body, dissolving federal and regional legislatures and centralizing authority in the hands of the Head of State 3. Legal Supremacy: Decrees issued under this framework were given the force of law and were immune from judicial challenge, effectively placing the military above the law 4. End of Regional Autonomy: While Decree No. 1 suspended the constitution, it paved the way for subsequent decrees, most notably Decree No. 34 (the Unification Decree) in May 1966, which abolished the federal system entirely and replaced it with a unitary structure Historical Context and Consequences Ironsi's regime used Decree No. 1 to justify the arrest of political opponents and the banning of political parties, promising to restore order and curb corruption . However, the centralization of power and the perceived failure to address the ethnic tensions exposed by the January coup deepened regional suspicions, particularly in Northern Nigeria . This legislative move, combined with the later Unification Decree, was a primary catalyst for the counter-coup of July 29, 1966, which resulted in Ironsi's assassination and the rise of Lieutenant Colonel Yakubu Gowon . .Decree No. 1 set a precedent for "rule by decree" that would define Nigerian governance for the next 33 years until the return of civilian rule in 1999 . |

You will never see the usual suspects on a truthful and honest thread like this. They hate anything truthful that bursts their delusional bubble of propaganda and falsehood. Every honest Nigerian knows that Aguiyi Ironsi abolished the regional government but it does not suit their lies and falsehood narrative that Yakubu Gowon abolished the regions. Every honest Nigerian knows that the January 15th 1966 coup was a tribal one sided Ibo coup meant to wrestle political power back to the Ibo which they felt they had lost when Nnamdi Azikiwe became a lame duck powerless and mere ceremonial president but they prefer to push the false narrative that the January 15th coup was a national rescue mission to free Chief Obafemi Awolowo from jail and make him the head of the proposed government. Every truthful Nigerian knows that General Yakubu Gowon released Chief Awolowo from Calabar prison but these deluded people keep on pushing their false propaganda that Odumegwu Ojukwu released him because it suits their narrative of passing off lies as the truth. These are just three of the false narratives propagated by these people and that is why honest threads like this are put on record for historical purposes. Thank you to the Original poster for this historical expose. Keep it up. |

They've told us ironsi "wanted to" change Niz**ria to unitary system before he was murdered. Later they said he "tried to" implement unitary system. The narrative continued getting spun until we arrived at the claim that he "turned" niz**ria into unitary state through his decree 34. Now that the claim has been rubbished, they're shamelessly back to decree one. You'll continue running like headless chickens, while kidnapping and beheading continue to ravage your own land |

Mbanda:You're ignorant bro. Ironsi introduced the Unitary System of Government into Nigeria. Gowon only split the 4 regions into Numerous States. The regions were already Weakened by Ironsi |

Parachoko:No! It's either you are ignorant or, you choose to allow hate to cloud your reasoning. The first paragraph of the picture I posted said it's Gowon that abolished regionalism so, I really don't know what you are saying. |

Go On With One Nigeria. Somebody already set the ball rolling with the promulgation of the Unitary Decree. That's was a costly mistake. The Brutish did us dirty by lumping us together, but the guys that destroyed the regional governments are short slighted and selfish. |

DomPerignon:Nigeria will not continue if any government should do that because, it will send wrong signal to some of those Igbos that worked against MNK, thinking that Nigeria is a better option. |

Short-sighted fellow, they always act out of greed. Nigeria would have been far better off with regional system of government, but those greedy beings destroyed everything, yet still they won't stay put in their home region. They are cheating SW, still choking the region with unchecked influx of migrants and economic IDPS. |

There's a big difference between abolishing democracy and abolishing the Regions Did Ironsi abolish democracy? Of course he did, thats how Soldiers like him seized power all over Africa and ruled by decree. But did Ironsi abolish the Regions and change the structural arrangement of Nigeria? No he did not. Ironsi even allowed resource control during his time in office The person who actually abolished the four Regions Nigeria had before military rule, was Gowon. Gowon abolished the 4 Regions Nigeria had, and created 12 new states to replace them, with Decree 14. Gowon then abolished resource control with Decree 15 Gowon even told you Nigerians that he was abolishing the Regions in his own Decree which said in section 1: "There shall, on commencement of this Decree, be created out of the Region's, States to be known by the names in column 1 So if you are still arguing about who abolished the Region's, you need help

gidgiddy:Spewing usual trash as expected. Decree 34 abolished all regions by collapsing each regional civil service into the federal civil service. All regions were then reduced to mere provinces under the centrist military dictatorship. Soon you will tell us that Ironsi never declared himself HoS. |
| Re: How Ironsi's Decree 1 Of 1966 Abolished Regions by lawani(m): 9:31am On May 24 |
gidgiddy:What people complain about of General Ironsi was his attempted unification of the civil service. That was the main thing. Resource control by the FG is actually not that bad because nobody put the oil there and it is actually free money that is owned by the FG in many successful nations. The strange one Nigeria that Ironsi was trying to create where state civil service will be under the FG is what people say was wrong. Nigeria was negotiated as a union of nations with separate civil service and independent governments |

lawani:How can there be fiscal autonomy when the state machinery to govern and administer has been disbanded and collapsed into the Federal civil service? All regional tax generating offices were disbanded and collapsed into the federal inland revenue service which means the military dictatorship was now collecting and imposing taxes on the people without any consent or representation on how they are taxed and what that taxed money was used for within their regions. |
