Why Is It Hard To Get A Nigerian Outfit Made Abroad? by Wonder2501(op): 11:42pm On May 19
Genuine question.

Nigeria has some of the most
talented fashion designers in the world.

The diaspora has millions of
Nigerians who desperately want
authentic outfits for owambe,
weddings, prom, burials.

The money is there.
The talent is there.
The demand is there.

But somehow in 2026 the best
solution people have found is
still Instagram DMs and prayers. 😅

Why has nobody solved this properly?

What is the biggest thing
stopping this from working?

What country are you in? There are many fashion solutions overseas, but home based will always be superior.

Because the cost of purchasing it over there might not be budget friendly to them. I have a friend who was gushing that his wife was making a dress for a client in the US for N200k.

By every metric that’s a lot of money for one dress in Nigeria but imagine how much, that same person would charge if they were over there.

Every one loves cheaper labour

I don't think this business can scale. How many Nigerians wear native clothes while going to work or church?

Businesses need turnover and that cannot happen in a country where Nigerians are just 0.000000001% of the population. It's a bad business idea; drop it.

Cos it's cheaper to order from Nigeria. If a dress takes about 20 hours to make. How much do you think your client is willing to pay. Mind you, some beaded dresses take more than 20 hours .

Peehaps this will depend on the size of the “Nigerian community” one find himself/herself. We have a large number of people in Indianapolis so there are few of our folks who actively make/design clothes for the larger population there full time. Business are to make profit and there’s no way they will make that if orders don’t come because of the size of the community and all that.

It's common sense. You can only get the original from the origin.
Re: Why Is It Hard To Get A Nigerian Outfit Made Abroad? by pocohantas(f): 8:11am On May 27
Most Nigerian outfits are custom made. It is not something we sew and keep. It is also more affordable to order from Nigeria.
Re: Why Is It Hard To Get A Nigerian Outfit Made Abroad? by ARISHEM: 8:12am On May 27
Its because there are either no Nigerian tailors or there are no demand for such outfits

The wasteful life that you all live in Nigeria, you have exported it abroad. Do you see the Europeans and Americans whom you see as gods live the type of wasteful life you live? Just continue, the end justifies the means

The major problem here is that the Nigerian fashion industry is heavily dominated with individual tailors who made custom attires instead large-scale fashion firms making them on large quantities.
Re: Why Is It Hard To Get A Nigerian Outfit Made Abroad? by AdolfHitlerxXx: 8:20am On May 27
And the Instagram vendors then put exorbitant prices on items.

In 2023, heard someone tagged an agbada for 1 million naira in Kano. Didn't believe it till I checked on-site when I had business in the State. shocked
Re: Why Is It Hard To Get A Nigerian Outfit Made Abroad? by Tats(m): 8:20am On May 27
It’s not that easy to get. And when you see, the choice is very limited. It also cost about £120 for a simple traditional men’s wear
Re: Why Is It Hard To Get A Nigerian Outfit Made Abroad? by Perewenkle1: 8:25am On May 27
There are many African tailors overseas that can make a perfect beautiful Nigerian outfits for you, dose’t have to be a Nigerian tailor. Google Africa tailors where you reside.

People are NOT paying 1 million for the talent NOR QUALITY OF THE FABRIC it takes to sew the cloth. They're paying 1million so they can brag to their friends and enemies that they have money and can spend 1 million price (whixh is verifiable since it's a known brand/tailor) on a cloth that will fade after washing it 5 times.

That's why you see many people wear terrible clothes wey nor even fit them, but atleast they can signal being "rich".
