The Presidency has tackled the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, following his criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration regarding the proposed implementation of state police.

The presidency’s response was contained in a statement on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Social Media, Dada Olusegun.

Recall that on Thursday Governor Seyi Makinde urged the federal government to stop deceiving Nigerians over the creation of state police. He insisted that state governments already possess the power to establish their own policing structures through local legislation.

Governor Makinde made the assertions during the governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly primaries of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) held at the Watershed Celebration Centre in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Addressing party members and delegates at the event, the governor reflected on the establishment of the Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Amotekun, across the South-west, describing the outfit as a fallback option after initial efforts to establish state police failed.

According to him, the regional security outfit was created by South-west states through laws passed by their respective Houses of Assembly—a legislative process he argued could also be adopted for establishing full state police.

“Some people will know insecurity was one of the major pillars of this administration when we established Omitutun phase one and phase two, and it will remain a major pillar. Before this government’s emergence, there was nothing like Amotekun in Oyo State. We wanted state police. It was because we couldn’t get the state police that we established Amotekun as a stopgap. They should stop wasting Nigerians’ time,” Governor Makinde stated.

“We know how we established Amotekun. The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly is here. We passed a common law in the whole of the Southwest. The whole Houses of Assembly in all states in the Southwest passed the law, and that led to the creation of Amotekun.

“The only state that didn’t create Amotekun is Lagos State, and we know it is because their boss didn’t want Amotekun,” he said.

Replying via a post on his X handle, presidential aide Dada Olusegun accused Governor Makinde of using the federal government as a scapegoat to deflect from the rising insecurity and underfunding plaguing his own state.

While Lagos mobilizes billions for the welfare and resources of all security apparatus in Lagos state, Oyo sends brave Amotekun operatives into forests with pump-action rifles to fight AK-47-wielding syndicates. If Gov. Makinde cannot adequately finance, equip, and manage his own regional vigilante group, how does he plan to shoulder the colossal financial burden of a full-fledged State Police? President Tinubu understands that constitutional security reform requires meticulous legality and rigid economic frameworks, not rushed politics to distract from local failures.

Before lecturing the architect of Nigeria’s most successful security funding model, Gov. Makinde owes the people of Oyo State a duty of care. Elevate Amotekun from a poorly funded political prop into a tactically superior force. Until then, the lectures remain hollow.

The president is in charge of the military, police, NSCDSC, NDLEA, DSS, DIA,NIA and every other security agency in Nigeria, infact all the Vigilante groups existing in Nigeria are illegal if we should go by the Nigerian constitution. A governor can't give an order to even a traffic police by law. The president even collects illegal security votes despite these agencies having approved funding. Yet the president wants the governors to fight insecurity to justify the illegal security votes they also collect despite not being in control of any security agency😡💔. Country of particular concern' indeed💔😡

This government is the most useless ever, can you imagine the presidency responding to everything people say about their ineffectiveness. All these energy cannot be channeled to save the people from terrorism. Shame

If this is the best thing that could come to Dada's head considering the gravity of the situation, then I'm afraid that theory of not needing a brain after joining APC could very well be true. Gov. Makinde plays on workers' psyche and always portrays the president in bad light. If Ajimobi had gotten the type of money Makinde got,he would have turned Oyo State to an Eldorado. Apart from circular road and bus stops,what are Makinde's landmark projects?

FG control the security architecture of the whole control, cos there's limitation for the state government on the securities.

Listen up muncher of shawa, It is Tinubu's responsibility to build the police stations, fund and equip them so ask him why he has only 74 police stations in Oyo state and he hasn't built a single one in 3 years while claiming he has exceeded revenue a la audio. Why are you pushing the responsibility of Tinubu to Makinde? Did Tinubu build police stations when he was gov? Why are you now asking govs to do what he never did as gov?
Is Amotekun not a good enough initiative for state security? What security outfit did Tinubu float as gov that can measure up to Amotekun in Oyo state? I am from Oyo State and our Governor is underperforming compared to the resources at his disposal.
I repeat Gov. Abiodun has outperformed Makinde particularly in this second term.
Apart from Iseyin ,which other town in oke-ogun has benefited from Mr. Governor's administration? Can you mention just 2 landmark projects already completed in Ibarapa? Governance is not about paying workers' salaries alone.

Check the comments since this really sad incident happened,those hailing makinde are majorly of a political leaning and they are doing all these not because they love the kidnapped kids more than anyone else but for political reasons and nothing more......the govs are doing very poorly in terms of securing their states except for maybe,lagos,rivers and edo to an extent,delta too isnt doing badly also anambra......obi in all honesty tried as a gov during his time,I personally witnessed what he did then.
