Rising global energy costs continue to strain households, businesses, and transport systems across Africa, pushing fuel affordability to the centre of economic debate in 2026. Across the continent, petrol prices directly influence everything from daily commuting expenses to food distribution and overall inflation levels.

Despite these pressures, several African nations have managed to maintain relatively low fuel prices through domestic production advantages, government subsidies, or controlled pricing policies. According to data from GlobalPetrolPrices, these countries currently offer the most affordable petrol in Africa as of May 2026.

1. Libya
Libya remains the undisputed global leader in cheap fuel prices, with petrol selling at just $0.024 per litre.

The country’s vast crude oil reserves, combined with heavy government subsidies, allow domestic fuel to remain extremely affordable. Despite ongoing political and economic challenges, Libya continues to prioritise low energy costs for citizens, making it the cheapest petrol market in the world.

2. Angola
Angola ranks fourth globally and second in Africa, with petrol priced at $0.327 per litre.

As one of the continent’s major oil producers, Angola benefits from strong upstream production capacity. Government-backed fuel subsidies remain a key factor in keeping pump prices low for consumers and businesses.

3. Algeria
Algeria places sixth globally, with petrol averaging $0.355 per litre.

The North African nation’s large oil and gas reserves, combined with long-standing state-controlled pricing mechanisms, continue to shield domestic consumers from global price volatility.

4. Egypt
Egypt ranks eighth worldwide, with petrol priced at $0.454 per litre.

Despite ongoing economic reforms and gradual subsidy adjustments, Egypt continues to regulate fuel prices to limit inflationary pressure on households and transport operators.

Try also and compare per capita income and minimum wage in countries vis a vis Nigeria.
How many litres of petrol can an average civil servant afford from his salary to fuel his motorcycle - let me not mention car.

Whats the minimum wage in Ghana compared to Nigeria......just go to Ghana and price a car then comeback to compare to Nigeria.....Libya,angola,tunisia,south africa aren't your mate when it comes to per capita income....Libya is over $6k while yours is less than $1k, non of those countries above Nigeria has up to half our population even cars and machinery......so how do you expect Nigeria a poorer nation to subsidise a population of over 200m to the tune of N5tr annually and a chunk of that is going out through our borders to our west African neighbours making some people richer while the country keeps carrying the burden.
