Like other states in the South-east, security has deteriorated in Anambra State with frequent attacks by armed persons in recent times.

Some gunmen have killed four people, including two police officers, in Anambra State, Nigeria’s South-east.

The incident happened at about 9 p.m. on Sunday when gunmen attacked the convoy of Ben Nwankwo, the newly appointed chief of staff to Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State.

The hoodlums had laid an ambush before opening fire at the convoy along the Amansea–Ndiora–Ndiukwuenu–Awa–Ufuma Road in Orumba South Local Area of the state.

The area shares boundaries with communities in Awka North Local Government Area of the state.

The slain officers were part of a police team accompanying the convoy when the hoodlums ambushed and killed them.

Two other slain victims were said to be officials attached to the chief of staff’s office.

PREMIUM TIMES gathered that Mr Nwankwo, the chief of staff, was inside the convoy during the attack.

Anambra govt fumes
The police spokesperson in Anambra State, Tochukwu Ikenga, did not respond to calls seeking his comment.

However, the Commissioner for Information in Anambra State, Law Mefor, confirmed the attack in a statement on Monday night.

Mr Mefor said the Anambra State Government was shocked by the attack on the convoy of the chief of staff.

The commissioner said the chief of staff was returning from an assignment when the attack happened.

“This was more than an attack on one person. It was an attack on the peace, security, and democratic order of our state, as well as the government and people of Anambra.

“Sadly, four people lost their lives and deserve justice,” he said.

Mr Mefor said the state government has commiserated with families of those who lost their loved ones in the attack.

“The police and other security agencies are working to find and to bring everyone involved in this evil act to justice,” he assured.

Increased attacks
Like other states in the South-east, security has deteriorated in Anambra with frequent attacks by armed hoodlums in recent times.

Security operatives, government officials and their facilities have been targeted in such attacks.

No group has claimed responsibility for the latest attack, although the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has been blamed for the frequent attacks in the South-east.

But the group has repeatedly denied any involvement in the attacks.

IPOB is seeking the secession of South-east and some parts of the South-south from Nigeria.

Were you not born when kidnappers kidnapped and killed a former deputy governor of Anambra when Obi was governor? What do you mean by security has deteriorated in Anambra. Were you on the moon when terrorists made sure everyone sit at home every Monday, and they flog or kill grown men, women and children? Sre you saying you didn't see them eating humans?

If democracy is a level playing ground, let the VIPs security details be withdrawn including all political office holders, let all of us go through this pains and panicking together.

I pity policemen who follow convoys of politicians and VIPs. Most especially those in the Toyota Hilux they normally use. They fail to understand that they are in a kill box and it takes nothing for a well timed ambush to wipe them all out.

An attack coming from the front has already reduced the line of sight of the policemen at the back of the Hilux by over 40%. If they pop out their head to see which direction the fire is coming from, they get picked off.

Those inside the Hilux are even worse off. There's little room to properly aim and fire plus you are taking incoming and accurate fire targeted at you. The driver of the Hilux may take a hit and the vehicle becomes immobile. So there you are, armed in a kill box and in a kill zone but useless and helpless. As multiple rounds pierce your body, you are surprised that the so called bullet proof the police division gave you, is nothing but hardened plastic.

As you close your eyes for the last time, drawing your last breath, thoughts of your family flash across your mind. They will be lucky to even see any of your emoluments. They will be lucky to be compensated for your death and even then, they'll not see more than half a million at most.

The politician you lost your life for trying to protect, has written to State HQ for replacement officers to be sent. They will be on their way even before your body gets cold.

It is sad isn't it? You had spent your years in service boasting to terrified civilians that you will kill them and nothing will happen. Funny enough, here you lie dead as a door nail, dead in active service yet the same police force you gave your life for Will not be bothered to investigate and go after your killers. You have died and truly nothing is happening!

Like which other states in the South East? I don't know when last we heard any kidnap in Abia, Owerri, Ebonyi or Enugu. Communal clashes, yes, but not banditry or kidnap. Last I checked, the kids are still in school not worried about being abducted. If you want to report the news, just do and don't bring a peaceful region into it because of bigotry. We are still praying to God for the release of the kidnap kids in Oyo, not to talk of all the raid of churches in Kwara and Ekiti. May God help the government to stop playing politics and work on releasing the kids

Seems kidnapping has been in the south east from the time Peter obi was governor, so it is nothing new. And aside the unknown gunmen causing mayhem there, every other part of the country is safe and the current government is doing very well... Bravo👍🏽

One suspect has been arrested. The remaining ones will be clamp down. They will be no space for them. Agunaechemba together with JTF will comb the entire communities in orumba and fish them out.

Update: some suspects were caught and are currently investigated by the SCID. Hopefully, their motives will shed some light on who were the sponsors.
