Fewer Ex-Convicts Are Returning To Prison As Reforms Show Results — FG by OgundeleTeju(op): 9:26pm On Jun 03
The Federal Government says the number of repeat offenders within the Nigerian Correctional Service has dropped significantly from 11,616 in 2023 to 1,382 in 2025, attributing the development to ongoing rehabilitation and reformation programmes.

Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this on Wednesday during the presentation of an investigative report on the NCoS, describing the trend as evidence that reforms in the correctional system were yielding results.

"Recidivism was 11,616 when we came in in 2023 in 2024 it dropped to 3,156 but in 2025 it came down to 1,382 recidivists. It means that our reformation programmes are bearing fruits. The point is that we are no longer where we were. We are making progress,” the minister said.

He added that the government would not declare success until the figure is reduced to zero.

“For us, not until recidivism gets to zero, we cannot say we have succeeded,” Tunji-Ojo said.

The minister also disclosed that 15,632 inmates were admitted into custody in May 2026 alone, while 14,190 were released within the same period under various legal conditions.

Let me add that 15,632 inmates were admitted into custody in May 2026 alone, while 14,190 were released under various terms of imprisonment during the same period, ” he said.

He stressed the need for continued reforms and stronger implementation of recommendations contained in the investigative report.

“This report will not gather dust on the shelves. We are going to be very aggressive in terms of implementation,” he said, adding that a monitoring and evaluation committee would be set up.

Tunji-Ojo also called for collaboration with state governments on the relocation of correctional facilities, noting that many of them were no longer fit for purpose due to urban expansion.

Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani, said the investigative panel visited 86 custodial centres across 23 states during its assignment.

The ongoing reforms in the Nigerian Correctional Service are yielding measurable results. The significant drop in recidivism, increased access to education, and expanded vocational training programmes show a clear shift from punishment to rehabilitation.

This report provides a strong foundation to deepen reforms, strengthen accountability, and ensure correctional centres truly become institutions of reformation, restoration, and successful reintegration into society.

Na wa ooooo
Anything to score points

Less ex convicts returning
More innocent ending up in bushes or in grave
The real criminals becoming bolder and marching into new territories
The retired terrorists who should be in the prisons are somewhere eating fat on our taxes

Reforms finish all of them there

Can Government officials be sensitive enough to stop taking off-point in the next sixty days.

Why is it a correctional center if you expect the convicts to come back ?

Another APC achievement don land again ooo 😁🤣🤣😁🤣🤣😁😁🤣🤣😁🤣😁🤣😁😁🤣🤣😁🤣🤣

The issue is that the government policies are making low income people desperate and dangerous. That Labourer in your vicinity is desperate to survive, that taxi driver is desperate to survive, that police officer at the checkpoint is desperate to survive. Countless of people in Nigeria today are desperate to survive. All these are caused by policies that make people poor. One chance in Abuja no longer rub you for money in your bag or pocket, they are now kidnapping people especially women for millions of naira in ransom. How did we get here, BAD POLICY that was not well researched before implementing. You Dey copy developed countries policies to implement in third world countries. Try get shame and scense.

I'm particularly interested in knowing what those ex-convicts who get released from time to time end up doing....are there organizations that partner with them to help set them up with something tangible?
Re: Fewer Ex-Convicts Are Returning To Prison As Reforms Show Results — FG by dederocs(m): 9:51am On Jun 04
Maybe they know how to evade capture this time. Have you captured turji?

Stop this rehabilitation it is evil, if you want to rehabilitate people,. rehabilitate those in IDP camps, that have been raped, whose parents have been killed by these fula sahelians terrorists kidnapping network, they need to pay for their demonic crimes. Dozens of countries still use death Penalty and execute terrorists and don't have terrorists problems. Of all prisoners in Nigeria why choose to rehabilitate the worst set?

Releasing these terrorists demons inspire other young ones to join, because they know when caught they will be pampered and given money, releasing them is increasing terrorism. This FG is very dull

Kill them, for their killings and violations, it's the way of justice.
