former president of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has claimed that Boko Haram terrorists are gradually achieving their goal of establishing a caliphate in Nigeria by spreading to the South-West.

Hitherto, the extremist group has largely operated in the North-East.

Mr Lawan’s claim came amid recent abductions and killings across the country.

“The recent event of abductions, kidnappings, killings and massacres has woken so many Nigerians from their slumber and sleep,” Mr Lawan said during plenary on Wednesday, charging the National Assembly. “As leaders, this national assembly has the most important responsibility of ensuring the protection of the life and property of Nigerians.”

Mr Lawan, who represents the Yobe North senatorial district, added, “Mr President, Boko Haram terrorists are gradually achieving their target. It started in the North-East and is now spreading to the South-West. The modus operandi are the same.”

On May 15, terrorists invaded a community in the Oriire local council of Oyo state and kidnapped dozens of schoolchildren and staffers.

There have been protests in several states for the government to rescue the abducted pupils and teachers held hostage by the terrorists.

The thing about terrorist organizations is the love of expansion, they like expansion of territory because it gives them more revenue to fund activities, more population to proselytize and convert to their cause,more street credibility amongst their fellow sister organizations etc...If you are a terrorist organization well established in the north and there was a need to expand whilst blooding new recruits, where will you penetrate? South east? With a relatively low land mass in addition to low Islamic penetration, with a people very hostile to outsiders especially those from the north and these people are known to be very war like, willing to fight for their land like the Biafran war. Or do you penetrate the Southwest, where you already have family ties, religious ties, hell even political ties with a docile populace most favorable to Islam and a direct route to the rich lands of Lagos and the Atlantic Ocean...
