Politics No Longer For Ordinary Nigerians - Emeka Ike by chopnaira(op): 6:57am On Jun 07
Actor and politician, Emeka Ike, has expressed his concerns about the current Nigerian political landscape, stating that it offers little to no opportunity for legitimate and ordinary Nigerians to participate.

In an exclusive interview with Saturday Beats, he opened up about the challenges he faced while transitioning from Nollywood to politics.

“One of the biggest lessons is that there is very little room for ordinary Nigerians in politics. If you do not have substantial financial resources, it becomes almost impossible to compete, regardless of how intelligent, resourceful or impactful you are. A banker does not have that kind of money. A journalist does not have that kind of money. Most ordinary professionals do not. This means many Nigerians have effectively been disenfranchised,” he explained.

The actor emphasised that politics has largely been dominated by individuals with enormous resources, many of whom have acquired their influence through questionable means. “I am not hiding that fact. Nigerians need to stop supporting political moneybags simply because they are wealthy. Many capable Nigerians are effectively being pushed away from politics, and that is something we must resist,” he stated.

Reflecting on his motivation to enter politics, Ike said, “Our fathers waited for change in Nigeria. My mother died waiting for that change. I am approaching 60, and it feels as though my children may face the same consequences. I asked myself, ‘Why not join and make some noise? Why not do something to let Nigerians know that this is wrong?’ I wanted to contribute to the change and see if I could make a difference before it’s too late.”

In a recent turn of events, the actor initiated legal proceedings against Lere Olayinka, media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, after unauthorised access and a breach of data privacy exposed some of the actor’s personal details on the Independent National Electoral Commission’s website.

While discussing the incident, Ike admitted feeling unsafe but stated that it had only strengthened his resolve in his political pursuits.

"It strengthened my decision to fight the anomaly. It did not make me feel like dropping out of the race because I actually came into the race to be part of the solution. The individual involved exposed me to danger, but I am not a weak man. If anyone comes to my house with bad intentions, they should be prepared for the consequences. I am not scared, but I am taking precautions. For now, I move from place to place while my lawyer continues to work on the matter,” he said.

Ike also urged citizens to obtain their voter cards and actively participate in the 2027 elections.

He called on NGOs to unite and monitor the electoral process closely.

"People should be held accountable, and that is why I am calling on civil society organisations to rise to their responsibilities. They should sensitise Nigerians and even protest this issue if necessary. This is not about Emeka Ike. It is a warning sign. At the same time, Nigerians should reject the belief that their votes do not count. They should go out and vote. If we can significantly increase voter registration and turnout, the small group of people manipulating the system will be overwhelmed by the will of the people,” he said.

The truth?

Politics in Nigeria has never been for ordinary Nigerians. We have a system that has so weaponized poverty such that ONLY the high elites have the wealth to buy votes, sow discord across tribal and religious lines, pay for propaganda and buy nomination forms.

So yes, it was always about who has more money, NOT morals. It has always been about who has more leverage (blackmail, skeleton in cupboard) and NOT vision.

When low level elites try to climb up the elite ladder get burnt, they will now come out trying to claim they are ordinary Nigerians like us - no Sir, you're not, you just were not allowed into their circle.

Ordinary Nigerians will only win elections when we start voting massively and not use election days for playing street football and/or bedroom match.

I think street football should be banned on election days, beer parlours ordered not to open on election days...if possible nepa should keep the whole country in darkness so that sex won't be enjoyable that day...all these Is just to make Nigerians come out and vote. Adults o

The ordinary Nigerians he's referring to is himself, don't get it twisted. They only love and show concern for the grassroots before they ascend their political throne and become wild animals

But unknown & poor people won across the country in last elections through obedient?

Sadly they crossed to join moneybags after riding on the back of poor voters who thought they would make a difference.

Reasons I don't blame voters who collected money from every politicians.

Is Emeka Ike an ordinary Nigerian? Ordinary Nigerians are civil servants, mechanics, hairdressers, traders, and others who struggle to afford even ₦500,000, let alone the millions of naira required to purchase nomination forms from political parties.

Even those that are currently in the House of Representatives that switched from Labour party to NDC did not win their primaries. Dickson replaced them with people that paid more money for the tickets. Its all transaction.

Dickson is the godfather of NDC.

How? Sometimes it seems impossible, when all Inec plus senates are behind balablue, bulaba. A very decay system. The same system permits anyone to do anyhow becos they have a relationship with the president. The same system that we heard that Bobrisky didn't do his term in prison. The same Bobrisky ran away without the truth to the matter. Nigeria is a joke.
