A viral video from Benin City has captured the frustration of Edo residents battling severe floods this week.

In the clip, a group of residents wades through waist-deep water while singing mockery praises to Governor Monday Okpebholo: “Edo State Is Truly Shining, See How Everywhere Is Looking.”
The sarcastic chant came as heavy rains left major roads like Airport Road and Upper Sakponba under water, with homes and shops flooded across Ikpoba Hill and Egor. Cars were seen submerged, and traders struggled to salvage goods.

The phrase “Edo Is Shining” echoes the state government’s slogan, now being used by residents to highlight the contrast between official messaging and current realities on the ground.

The video has sparked debate online. Some users say it reflects years of poor drainage and failed urban planning. Others argue the Okpebholo administration inherited the problem and recently approved ₦2.1 billion for a “Flood-Free Edo” project.

The Governor visited flood sites on Wednesday and ordered immediate dredging of blocked channels. But for many residents, the damage is already done.

This is the second major flood in Benin City this rainy season, raising fresh questions about preparedness and long-term solutions.

Benin city has been having flood problem perennially for decades and it cant be solved in barely a year......this problem has been there lo g before this givt came in.......the way you people criticise leaves much to be desired.....obaseki was there for 8 years what did he do,oshiomole was the only one that made tangible attempts to curb it which his successor should have continued but didn't despite coming from same benin.....if obaseki had followed through with storm drain collector project,this flood menace would have been curbed.

Frustration you cannot translate to advocacy simply because you have once pandered to sentiments and not looked at governance objectively as one who pays for a service and expects delivery.

When citizens of other nations out there put their leaders under severe pressure we often wonder why because all seems to work in those climes.

Little do we realise that it is all out of a culture of intolerance and impatience for mediocrity.

Since I have become an adult, Benin has always been flooded during the wet season. We are talking about decades without a solution, government after government, elected by the same people that have an annual ritual of lamentation, yet they cannot see the correlation between how they appoint leaders and what they expect from them.

You cannot get a leader in 27 years of 5th republic democracy to pledge to solve it and does so indeed.

It is not about the governor's plan.
It is about the peoples demand.
Governance is ON DEMAND.
That is how it works.
If you call customer service and say nothing over the line, nothing will be done.

The same thing at Federal level.
You say nothing so the fellow goes about building concrete highways to nowhere. Did you ask him to do that so you can elect him into office.

Government is a partnership, an enterprise. You are the stakeholder or shareholder They are the operators, the managers. They work in thw interest of the owners of the enterprise. And I repeat again, not doing what the feel like.

There were a slew of big budget projects in the UK for many years now notably HS2 and Heathrow 3rd runway. Both were stalked for many years because the people disagreed on everything from cost to the environment.

It took extraordinarily effort by government to get HS2 going despite the fact that the people bad demanded for high speed links to open up the north of the country. That of Heathrow 3 has been outrightly rejected because the people could not see the benefits of a bigger airport and the attendant pollution and environmental cost.

That is a people actively engaging government on what they want, how they want it, how much they are prepared to pay for it and what they will and will not tolerate. And government dare not do otherwise or they are thrown out.

If the Benin people want this problem solved permanently in a year it will be done.
