The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria has expressed concern over the worsening security situation across the country, urging the Federal Government to take urgent and decisive action against killings, kidnappings, terrorism and banditry. In a statement issued by its Secretary-General, Nafiu Baba Ahmad, the Council said insecurity had reached an alarming level despite repeated assurances from government officials that the situation was being addressed. According to the Council, recent attacks in states such as Borno State, Oyo State, Niger State and Zamfara State show that many communities remain vulnerable to terrorists, kidnappers and armed criminal groups. The group also referenced the recent abduction of a retired army general and his wife in Katsina State, describing it as a sign that criminal elements are becoming increasingly emboldened. ‘Nigerians Are Tired Of Promises’ The Council said many violent attacks in rural and underserved communities often go underreported, suggesting that the true scale of insecurity may be worse than official statistics indicate. It added that reports from security and human rights organisations suggest thousands of Nigerians have been killed, displaced or abducted in recent months, including reports of more than 1,000 kidnappings across northern Nigeria in the first quarter of the year. Expressing frustration over the lack of visible progress, the Council said repeated appeals by traditional rulers, religious leaders and civil society groups had not produced meaningful improvement. “Nigerians are tired of speeches, promises, condolences, committees and official rhetoric that are not matched by concrete action and measurable outcomes. What the nation requires now is decisive intervention and visible results,” the statement read. Call For Better Security Strategy And Accountability While acknowledging the sacrifices of military and security personnel engaged in counterinsurgency and anti-banditry operations, the Council said its concerns were directed more at leadership, planning and coordination failures. It stressed that the Federal Government must provide stronger direction and more effective support for frontline security agencies. The Council also called for greater transparency in the management of security-related funds, arguing that Nigerians deserve accountability regarding resources allocated to defence, intelligence and national security operations. According to the group, improving accountability would strengthen public confidence and ensure resources are used effectively. Recommendations To Government The Council urged the government to adopt more proactive and technology-driven measures to address insecurity, including: Improved intelligence gathering Greater use of modern surveillance technology Stronger coordination among security agencies Increased community participation in security efforts Better border control mechanisms The Council warned against complacency, insisting that Nigerians now expect measurable progress, competent leadership and urgent intervention to protect lives and vulnerable communities from further attacks. http://dailygists.ng/post.php?id=815
