What our match with Nigeria will do for us – Portugal star, Nélson Sem

Portugal defender, Nélson Semedo, is of the opinion that the friendly match against Nigeria on Wednesday will serve as an opportunity for manager Roberto Martínez to explore new strategies and tactical methods in preparation for their 2026 World Cup journey.

Semedo participated in the first half during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over South American rivals Chile on Saturday evening, with Gonçalo Guedes and Bruno Fernandes contributing to the scoreline.

Portugal is refining their preparations for the 2026 World Cup, as Martínez is eager to evaluate various combinations and tactical modifications prior to their opening match against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The upcoming friendly against the Super Eagles is anticipated to provide another significant challenge for the European team, enabling Martínez to assess players in diverse positions.

“Certainly, that is the purpose of these matches. We have a game against Nigeria now, and this presents a chance to develop new dynamics,” Semedo stated to RTP, as reported by Record.

“We are professionals, and I am confident that we can adhere to the coach’s concepts, regardless of what they entail.”

The friendly encounter between Portugal and Nigeria is scheduled to occur at Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria, with kickoff set for 2045 hours.

The Super Eagles have demonstrated remarkable form, remaining unbeaten in their last 11 matches in regulation time, achieving eight wins and three draws.

Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi is on the verge of breaking a Nigerian record held by Ahmed Musa when the Super Eagles face Portugal in a high-profile international friendly on Wednesday evening, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.

Iwobi, who is currently on 99 international appearances, is set to join an elite group of Nigerian footballers to have reached the 100-cap milestone.

Even if he features for just a minute against Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal side on June 10, he will become only the fourth Nigerian player to reach the landmark, following in the footsteps of Joseph Yobo, Vincent Enyeama and Ahmed Musa.

But wait ohh

How did Nigeria fail to qualify for the World Cup?

Just last week, Nigeria's Team C comfortably beat Jamaica 3-0

Meanwhile, DR Congo could only manage a 1-0 win over Jamaica, whilst South Africa were held to a draw

Yet it was the same DR Congo and South Africa who stopped Nigeria from qualifying to the World Cup.

Wilfred Ndidi speaks on Portugal game

It will be a massive test for us as a group, to our vision, to our aim as a team, to our growth. It will definitely be a good test for us .

“We don’t know care who are playing, even we are playing against the biggest countries in the world, the most important thing is that as players we are ready to win. We look forward to taking our philosophy, and strategy to the game.”

Head coach of Portugal Roberto Martinez has praised the way Eric Chelle has transformed the senior national team of Nigeria since his appointment around a year ago, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

“I think Nigeria is a team with a coach whose ideas I really like. It is a very tactically flexible team, they can play in a diamond shape, a 4-4-2 diamond, with options, and then change quickly by bringing in wingers and two strikers”, he said while looking ahead of the game.

They use their squad very well. They have very fast attackers, physically very strong, and they are different from the Chilean style. So for us it is very, very important to work on that.

Portugal are using the friendly against Nigeria to fine-tune their preparations and tactical approach ahead of their World Cup opener against the Democratic Republic of Congo, who secured their place at the tournament after narrowly defeating the Super Eagles in the final of the African playoffs.

You see those Team C players, like you called them, they are hungry players. They are seeking opportunity to be seen and be first team players.
Current Super Eagles team is made up of ‘big boys’, who are millionaires, and can even pay the coach. So their commitment levels with the Nigerian jersey are low

The Portuguese won't take this match so seriously as they are 'using' the super eagles to anticipate what to expect from DR congo.

So even if they lose, it might not bother them so much as long as they learn key tactics on how to play against DRC.

As for the super eagles, they shouldn't over celebrate if they win.....the shame of missing the WC should make them a bit sober.
