Alex Iwobi joins Super Eagles centurion club with 100th Nigeria cap
The Fulham midfielder becomes just the fourth player in Nigerian football history to reach the century mark for the national team

Alex Iwobi become the fourth player in the history of Nigeria’s Super Eagles to earn 100 international caps. The Fulham midfielder, who has 99 appearances heading into an international friendly against Portugal,

Only three players have ever worn the green and white 100 times before him: Ahmed Musa, Joseph Yobo, and Vincent Enyeama.

A decade in the making
Iwobi made his Super Eagles debut as a teenager back in 2015. That means this particular journey has stretched across more than ten years of consistent international selection.

The 30-year-old was born in England, which meant he faced the kind of decision that shapes an entire career. He chose Nigeria, and has stated he has “no regrets” about choosing to represent the Super Eagles over England.

The centurion club
Ahmed Musa, the all-time leader in caps, became synonymous with the Super Eagles attack across multiple World Cup cycles. Joseph Yobo anchored the defense for years, captaining the side and bringing a level of professionalism that set standards for those who followed. Vincent Enyeama, the legendary goalkeeper, was for a long stretch considered one of the best shot-stoppers on the African continent.

Iwobi came through the Arsenal academy and carved out a Premier League career that eventually landed him at Fulham. His skill set as a midfielder gave the Super Eagles a different kind of tool than the goal-scoring threat of Musa or the defensive solidity of Yobo.

The friendly against Portugal also provides a useful measuring stick ahead of the 2026 World Cup, giving the Super Eagles coaching staff valuable information about where the squad stands tactically and which players can handle the intensity of top-level opposition.

Good job. I am happy he is not one of those who regret playing for the super eagles.
For someone playing for a big club switching nationality to playing for the super eagles is a bold move and a very big risk to take. He took that risk and he is soaring high

Congratulations to him!

But is this What they are looking for?
Next match Moses Simon will join

Meanwhile, why can’t local league players be given opportunities with friendly matches.
At least the highest goal scorer in the last season should have been featured last night against Portugal. Let’s market our ‘unknown’ products to the world.
Similarly, the best goalkeeper for the league could have at least been featured last night, even if it was just the second half

Una no dey tire for this local players inclusion.
All the opportunity they have in playing CAF competitions and CHAN competition, what have they done with it?
.
Imagine last season champions Remo Stars got relegated the season that just finished. And you said we should look into local stars.
By the way, few of them are being call up sha

Kanu Nwankwo, Jay Jay Okocha, Mikel Obi and co could have been among our centurions if not for their selecting of matches to play back then.
These players even stayed more years than Iwobi in the super eagles, but for their non challant attitude towards some of Eagles matches especially friendlies, the same path Osimhen and Lookman are towing now

You team can be relegated, but that doesn’t mean there are no quality players there.
Osimhen plays for Super Eagles, yet Super Eagles didn’t qualify for World Cup, does that make him an incompetent player?

I’ll keep advocating giving local players opportunities to play for the Super Eagles. They can mixup with foreign-based players to for a team.

So, since you have been using foreign-based players, how many trophies have you won?

Super Eagles miss the likes of Keshi, who saw quality in some local players and gave them the platform to shine
