Hello Nairalanders, The biggest sporting event on the planet is finally here, and I decided to create this thread so football lovers can gather in one place to discuss everything about the FIFA World Cup 2026. For the next few weeks, the world will literally stand still for football. Friendships will be tested, predictions will fail, underdogs will shock everyone, and new heroes will be born. This year's World Cup is special for many reasons. For the first time ever, 48 countries will participate in the tournament, making it the biggest World Cup in history. The competition will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, with matches played across several cities in the three countries.
A total of 104 matches will be played before a new world champion is crowned. Some teams have arrived as favourites. Spain, France, Brazil, Argentina, England, Germany, Portugal. And a few dark horses that could surprise the world. The beautiful thing about football is that nobody truly knows what will happen until the ball starts rolling. Will Argentina defend their crown?This thread is for all of that. Probably may not watch most of the cup...too too many matches. I preferred the world cup when it was 24 or 32 nations. 48 is too much. Now we got round of 24, round of 16, quarters, etc. As for Nigeria, the problem is, we won't do what the Belgians did and take measures to improve our football from top to bottom. Already there be danger signs....we have not qualified for a world u17 and U21 in years, and we are not doing well in African club tournaments, our last outing at the Nations cup was by miracle, by fire, by force, lol...and I doubt we have enough players in the top leauges in Europe...apart from Lookman (Yes Oshimen, but turkey is not a top european league...even though if Oshimen moves to Spain, England or Germany, he would fit right in) We may not qualify for the world cup for a while if care is not taken. See Italy. They were warned as early as 2010 that there were problems, they hired Baggio to fix them and then rejected his report and fired him ten months later, and now they have missed two world cups, last time it was Bosnia of all the countries that denied them. France has the best squad for me... Olise; mbappe; dembele; saliba; duoe; kante; cherki; etc they are loaded Folod by Portugal, Bruno; vitinha; Nuno Mendes; jaoa neves; Bernardo Silva; etc Ronaldo is just figure head nothing extra special about him...
