South Africa captain Ronwen Williams has expressed disappointment at what he described as a lack of support from fellow African nations following Bafana Bafana’s 2-0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico in their opening 2026 FIFA World Cup match on Thursday night, Saturday PUNCH reports.

The result leaves South Africa with work to do in Group A as they pursue a place in the knockout rounds.

Speaking after the match, Williams admitted he was surprised by the volume of African football fans who appeared to back Mexico rather than an African representative on the global stage, and called for greater unity among Africans during major tournaments.

“Africans have always supported other African countries in every World Cup tournament, but I can’t figure out why our own case is different,” Williams said. “Many Africans supported Mexico, not us, the South Africans. We almost shed tears, but it’s truly sad.”

"As Africans, let’s stand for each other, let’s stand together.”

While some supporters sympathised with the goalkeeper’s sentiments and agreed that African nations should rally behind one another at international competitions, others offered a contrasting view.

A number of social media users from countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Zimbabwe argued that recurring reports of xenophobic attacks on African migrants in South Africa have weakened the sense of continental solidarity, with several referencing past incidents involving foreign nationals living in the country as having shaped how other Africans view South Africa.

Some openly stated that they had supported Mexico in the match, citing those tensions as a factor in their decision.

With your country's hatred for other African people just forget any solidarity with you from fellow African people.
Xenophobic actions by South Africans will certainly destroy the rainbow nation if not stopped

You think you just made sense right Buh i engage from a higher perspective, what are south africans demands or complain

Remember this is not just about Nigerians, they have issues with other black people living in there countries, base on the assertion they are taking there jobs, and there gurlz ... the issue of immigation laws is minimal

Considering South africans Credentials & skills are thry really cheated out of those jobs they feel entitled to, The employer are fellow SA if thry prefer the best man for the job over blooda ... how is that foreigners fault

Are you aware there are places in SA that even blacks/indigenes can't visit or enter, are white not dominating and taking bigger pie in SA economy why are they not challenging the whites or attacking the whites, these very whites are the one the ones that ensalved there parents and jailed Nelson mandela why are they not hating on the whites

Someone said what is wrong with south africans is not xenophobia rather it is Afrophobia concortioned with STOCKHOLMES.

i see samantha125 on Nairaland buh i dont think i have seen her condemn actions of her brothers undecided
You dont make sense either. I can tell you have no clue of what youre talking about..

The issue of immigration is not minimal.. South Africa is facing a huge problem of illegal imigration, mass migration of most unskilled Africans from failed states.. this puts a strain on South African resources..

Lemme ask you a question..what do you think happens when an illegal unskilled Malawian crosses the south border illegally to find work in South Africa? Mind you, SA has high unemployment.. he either tries to set up informal work for himself eg. Street vendoring or resorts to crime or.. is either employed illegally to compete with the poorest secrion of South Africans, if those poor South Africans work for 30 rand and hour, the Malwaian with work for anything even 10 rand hour, therefore pricing other poor South Africans out.. this is the section that complains of jobs being taken by foreign immigrants, immigrants that are willing to.work for next to nothing... where do you think this Malawian will get housing? He willll most likely build a shack, next to city centers therefore contributing to grime and filth or.. either squat from "hijacked buildings" in the inner city..hijacked and occupied by illegal immigrants..

The situation of jobs also affects school leavers .. in my younger days, we used to get jobs right after leaving school, we used to call these jobs "piece jobs" and they were a way of getting job experience, jobs like deliveries, printing jobs, waitering etc were reserved for young south africans.. these jobs now are all filled with Zimbabweans who will work for next to nothing.. do you see the problem here?

In other African countries there are certain jobs reserved for their people, its like that in Ghana, its like that in Tanzania, however in South Africa is a free for all.. someone can cross a border today and tomorrow, he has his stall set up in thr inner city selling something, without papers without paying tax.. this won't happen in your countries but South Africans must accept this right?

As for complaining primarily of black immigrants, its because they're the most lawless, these are just facts.. no sugarcoating these are just our experiences, so I dont understand this reasoning that we must overlook wrongdoing because we're all Africans and go storm white South Africans in their homes, for what? Do you know who's terrorizing small poor, mining communities? Armed illegal miners from primarily Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Lesotho.. you know who poses a drug nuisance? Nigerians.. scamming, Nigerians..human trafficking ,Nigerians.. we have murderers from Zimbabwe, ATM bombings syndicates from Zimbabwe , murderers, grapists .etc.. not to mention Ethiopians, Pakistanis have their shht going on too .. we as South Africans have become so adept and used to foreign criminality that we know which nationality specializes on which crimes, so this "why dont they attack the whites" deflection wont work, we're not even attacking , we asking you to go! Just last week, Mozambicans killed an elderly white couple then fled to Mozambique.., so it is "Afrophobia" when we say enough is enough? .. Tell me why is there no mouth from you Africans and your governments when South Africans complain of these things daily but everyone and their mama has opinions when South Africans reach boiling point and say enough!
Re: South Africa Goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams Laments Lack Of African Support by Bakinson234: 10:11am On Jun 13
Fake news. South Africa is doing the right thing. We can't lawless as Africans. Respect South African immigration laws[/quote]..as much as your argument is reasonable,it is sad and rather unfortunate that the implementation does not have a human face, the present south African government came in with a police that is anti African leading to killing and maiming innocent africans

You never see anything yet. This just a tip of the iceberg. Aura for aura is the game. You guys think you have the monopoly of wickedness? No, you don’t! Instead of you to tailor your frustration at your people at home to sheath their swords and allow other African nations to live in peace in your country, you’re talking gibberish. You will face this backlash in every sphere of life; not only in sports. You ungrateful lots!
