We’re Not Safe If A General Can Die This Way - Reactions Trail Gen. Rabe's Death by Islie(op): 10:05pm On Jun 13
By Seun Adeuyi

The death of retired Major General Abubakar Rabe in captivity has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians expressing grief, concern over the country’s security situation, and reflections on leadership and public service.

Rabe, who was abducted alongside his wife in Katsina State about two weeks ago while travelling for a wedding, reportedly died while in captivity.

The Katsina State Government, through the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, announced on Saturday that the retired military officer died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while being held by his abductors.

Following the announcement, social media users took to Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) to mourn the former general and comment on the broader challenge of insecurity in the country.

On Facebook, Usman Almustapha described the incident as a lesson for serving military personnel, urging them to protect ordinary citizens during their years of service.

“The death of Major General Abubakar Rabe (Rtd) should serve as a lesson to serving military personnel. Use your position to protect and safeguard ordinary citizens while you are in service,” he wrote.

Another commenter, Musa Hassan, said the incident underscored the temporary nature of power and public office.

“People in power should know that power is transient and their failures and inaction today can affect them in future,” he stated.

Similarly, Suleiman Zaria offered prayers for the deceased while stressing the importance of responsible leadership.

“Leadership is a trust, and history never forgets. Doing the right thing at the right time will always leave a legacy of honour and service,” he wrote.

Mohammed Abdullahi Nako wrote: “If an army general can be kidnapped and killed, then who is safe? We are in grave danger under this lackadaisical government. The nation is no longer safe. Incessant kidnappings, banditry, and other violent crimes against citizens have become the order of the day.

“The government appears preoccupied solely with strategies to win the next election, while the safety of lives and property is no longer its priority. This misplaced focus underscores a glaring level of incompetence. When those entrusted with the security of the state cannot protect even high ranking military officers, it exposes a total collapse of the security architecture and a dereliction of the government’s primary constitutional duty to its people.”

Other users reflected on the country’s security challenges. Orok Bassey suggested that experiences such as Rabe’s could influence future discussions on approaches to addressing insurgency and banditry, while Joel Yuyu called for accountability and justice in confronting wrongdoing.

On X, many users expressed concern over the state of insecurity and questioned the safety of citizens.

A user identified as @abba_laminu lamented what he described as the growing threat posed by bandits, noting that the death of a retired senior military officer highlighted the dangers facing Nigerians.

“After years of service and sacrifice, Allah ya jiqanshi da rahama,” he wrote.

Another user, @Isiyaq, called on political leaders to take stronger measures against insecurity, while @ReliableGov described the incident as tragic.

Several other users used the occasion to renew calls for more effective responses to kidnapping and banditry across the country.

Rabe’s death has added to growing concerns over insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria, where kidnapping for ransom and bandit attacks continue to pose significant challenges despite ongoing security operations.

The retired military officer’s passing has drawn condolences from citizens across the country, many of whom described the incident as a painful reminder of the need for sustained efforts to improve security and protect lives.

Naija is in a downward spiral, Tinubu's concern is just to be called president "Emilokan"

The same methodology Tinubu and his cronies used to chase Goodluck...

Others are using the same playbook for him now.

Wise people will say: Na the same cane wey dem use flog old wife, them go use flog new wife.

In this case, Na the new wife buy the cane give the husband make him flog the old wife.

We no de feel am again. E get how something go happen reach e go turn the new normal.

Headline Fatigue: A modern, specific term for the mental numbness and exhaustion caused by consuming a constant stream of negative news reports.

Habituation: A basic biological and psychological term where an organism stops responding to a stimulus after repeated exposure because it is no longer perceived as a new threat.

And Learned Helplessness: A psychological state where an individual experiences so much unavoidable bad news or trauma that they completely stop trying to react or care, feeling utterly powerless.

This kinda explains and makes me understand how slaverly was able to last over 400 years without any kickback from the masses.

Same thing happens in some rape cases.
E get how person go take resist evil reach him go just tire mentally & physically so tee him go allow the evil to happen to am without resisting.

Naija government first bans ownership of automatic firearms so me and you cannot own it to defend ourselves. Then leaks it to the militia so they can attack and conquer without any form of equally matched resistance.

From the look of things, the Fulaniie ganjaweed militia will completely run over the entire country and in the long run a sharia state would be declared.

Then if you do as much as speak against them you would be executed asap. Making it the ultimate colonialism but this time via proxy.

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was right all these while.

The only way to stand up against these Sahel guerrilla warriors is by fire and force not peaceful negotiations. And unfortunately the Naija armed forces is their main sponsor

If Tinubu does not relieve Matawalle following the interview he granted and senseless deaths like this, then the government is very complicit in these killings.

Nigeria politicians are cashing out from this insecurity problem. My biggest surprise is that incompetent vegetable president that knows all the cables behind this nightmare we are facing he has all it takes to crashed them all but he refused. Because he doesn't want to step on toes that will make him lose next election. It's a complete disgrace to have APC in Nigeria. Tinubu is a complete incompetent fellow he has no ball a complete noise maker.

Nigerian leaders will forever be infamous for being the most heartless, clueless and ineffectual sets of leaders in the world.

Why the citizens haven't turned against them remained a mystery to me. Like are we under a spell or something?

Like play like play, some people will still vote in these sets of leaders in the next election?

God abeg o!

It's unfortunate indeed.

Nigeria is not working, the earlier we tell ourselves the truth the better for us.

The security agents are overwhelmed

who supplies the bandits with bullets when they run out of it ?
Untill the sponsors of terror are fished out and prosecuted we shall keep beating around the bush.

Bandits seems to be more dangerous now than Biko Haram

The biggest mistake Nigerians will make is allowing bat get a 2nd term in office.

If in his 1st term he can be so unbothered with the spate of terror acts, imagine when he has nothing to contest for again.

Even the state police is being treated as a political praise worship agenda instead as a genuine effort to improve security in nigeria and that is why most of BAT's policies/reforms have failed. He treats them like projects to glorify himself.

Even his statements on insecurity appear forced and perfunctory.
