China’s universities cut 12,000 ‘obsolete’ degrees amid race to embrace AI era.

The sweeping overhaul has affected over 30 per cent of China’s degree programmes, with arts and languages ditched in favour of tech-focused fields

China’s universities are undertaking a massive reshuffling of their academic offerings as part of a drive to better align higher education with the nation’s development goals – culling thousands of so-called obsolete degrees in favour of new, tech-focused programmes.

The sweeping campaign comes as China races to become a global leader in a slew of hi-tech “future industries” and solve a severe graduate jobs crisis, which has left millions of young people struggling to find work.

Between 2021 and 2025, China’s higher education institutions revoked or suspended 12,200 undergraduate degree programmes while introducing 10,200 new ones, meaning that more than 30 per cent of the nation’s university programmes underwent adjustments, according to Ministry of Education data cited by Xinhua.

Nigeria just left the group chat.

Even before the advent of AI, some courses ought to have been relegated or dropped. Why go to the university and spend 4/5 years to study courses like Sociology and Anthropology, Music, History, International Relation, English, Political Science, etcetera. Can't we just have one or two institutes(either at the national or int'l level) that focus or specialize on each of those disciplines? These institute will do the research work, publish it online and those who have interest or passion on any of the disciplines will learn from it. Also, feedback, contribution, reassessment can also be relayed to the institutes.

While browsing through the catalog, I saw one course called biocomputing.

Microbiology and Biochemistry still have strong use cases. Its Nigeria economy that have been able to deepen its play in this field

The knowledge from these courses may be important, inspiring and uplifting but they should be studied outside the 4 walls of a university; and these should be studied only by those who automatically just have passion and interest in them.

I wish Nigeria could borrow a leaf from China. Some courses are not just worth studying at all. Some of the arts and social science courses should be scrapped! You can't be studying social studies, English and literary studies, sociology, linguistics etc when other nations are busy making advances in AI...
