Football fans, there is something interesting about the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw.
Back in the 1998 World Cup, Group A consisted of:
🇧🇷 Brazil
🇲🇦 Morocco
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Scotland
🇳🇴 Norway

Fast forward 28 years to the 2026 World Cup and Group C contains:
🇧🇷 Brazil
🇲🇦 Morocco
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Scotland
🇭🇹 Haiti

Three of the four teams from the 1998 group have somehow found themselves together again after nearly three decades.

But that's not all.

In 1994, Group D had:
🇳🇬 Nigeria
🇦🇷 Argentina
🇬🇷 Greece
🇧🇬 Bulgaria

Then in 2010, Group B had:
🇳🇬 Nigeria
🇦🇷 Argentina
🇬🇷 Greece
🇰🇷 South Korea
Again, the same three countries were drawn together.

Considering the number of countries that have participated in World Cups over the years, the chances of the same trio repeatedly ending up in the same group must be quite small.

It also reminds me of the Argentina–Nigeria rivalry. The two countries have met in the group stage of multiple World Cups (1994, 2002, 2010, 2014 and 2018).

My question to football historians here:
Can you remember any other World Cup group where the same three countries were drawn together in different tournaments?
Or is Brazil–Morocco–Scotland (1998 & 2026) the most remarkable example?

I still remember that match between Morocco and Scotland. Morocco won 3:0, but crashed out after Norway beat Brazil in the last group match.
Mustapha Hadji, Hadda and Chippo were at their best that day. The Moroccan keeper Idris Benzekry was at his best that day.

You remember well.
It seemed, at that time, that Brazil "sold" the game to Norway, as it has been expected that Brazil would beat Norway and Morocco would qualify by simply defeating Scotland, as they did.

Better

Third world countries should focus more on technological advancements and leave fun (football) for developed countries. China did it and look at how they're no longer a 3rd world country.

If they want to be number 1 in football, they'll do what France did by using Africans with a mixture of their best players.

Also, I'm happy Nigeria isn't there to avoid death and heart attack. Some Nigerians are way too emotionally invested and are chronic gamblers.

For me, I don't care, as long as Messi scores even of he doesn't win it. It's Lamine Yamal's turn to touch a trophy.
Re: 28 Years Later, Brazil, Morocco & Scotland Are In The Same Group Again by Kalulu44: 9:00pm On Jun 14
I don't know of any other same pairing like that.
But I know of one of the most intriguing of world cup group.
In 1994, Group E consist of Italy, Norway, Ireland and Mexico.
Both 4 teams ended up with 4pts each.
Winning, drawing and losing one each.
.
Norway took the last place due to scoring just one goal and conceding 3.
Italy and Mexico qualified automatically.
While Ireland qualify as best loser.

Re: 28 Years Later, Brazil, Morocco & Scotland Are In The Same Group Again by DrTee1(m): 9:01pm On Jun 14
There was no space for 3rd best loser in 1998. It was the first 32-nation World Cup with 5 African countries, up from 3. USA 94 had 3rd place loser spots because there were 24 countries at the time.

You are underestimating Morocco. Brazil is 6th on FIFA rankings while Morocco is 7th!

Morocco is virtually a European team, and that country had applied to join the European Union in 1987. They were denied for geographical reasons.

No member of the starting 11 of the Atlas Lions was born in Africa.

Don't ever underestimate Maroc!

European countries and hypocrisy, they can accepted Israel but denied Morocco due to geographical location, so Middle East where Israel located is part of Europe.

There was no 3rd best looser at the 1998 world cup. It was the beginning of 32 participating teams, just as 2026 WC is the beginning of 48 participating teams.

Brazil beat Morocco 3-0 in the reference France 98 Mundial, didn't they?

Honestly, I didn't think you meant 2002. However, even at that, Brazil quite struggled to qualify for the 2002 World Cup from South America. The Selecao essentially grew into the tournament before winning it.

It is argued by some that the group stages were fixed to make it easy for the Samba boys to qualify, based on their perceived weakness at the time. If I am not mistaken, they were in a group with China, Costa Rica and Turkey...
