What a way to start .

Holding my hands up on this one — I had Türkiye down as a qualifier from Group D and Australia just dismantled that 2-0. Credit where it's due: the Socceroos pressed higher than expected and Türkiye's midfield never settled.

That's the thing about a model — it's only honest if you mark the misses too, not just the hits. Group D's the one that's blown open now: USA look the real deal after putting four past Paraguay, but that second qualifying spot is suddenly a three-way scrap between Türkiye, Australia and Paraguay.

Lesson I'm taking: in the 48-team format the "seeded" second favourites are the softest picks — the gap to the third seed is thinner than the rankings suggest. Anyone else have Türkiye going through, or did Australia not surprise you?
