MTN and DStv Under Pressure? Bianca Ojukwu Breaks Silence as Xenophobia Tensions Test Nigeria–South Africa Relations

The growing diplomatic unease between Nigeria and South Africa has taken a fresh turn following renewed calls for stronger action against South African businesses operating in Nigeria.

The debate intensified after Senator Adams Oshiomhole suggested that Nigeria should reconsider the privileges enjoyed by companies such as MTN and DStv if xenophobic attacks against Nigerians and other African migrants in South Africa continue unchecked.

Reacting to the controversy, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, emphasized the need for diplomacy and sustained engagement between both nations, signaling that Nigeria may prefer dialogue over retaliation.

Her comments come at a time when disturbing scenes linked to anti-immigrant campaigns in parts of South Africa have fueled public anger back home. Many Nigerians argue that businesses benefiting from Africa's largest consumer market should not remain insulated from the consequences of attacks targeting fellow Africans abroad.

Others, however, caution that punitive measures against MTN and DStv could hurt millions of Nigerian consumers, investors, and employees while further straining ties between two of Africa's most influential economies.

As tensions rise, the question remains: should economic pressure be used to defend Nigerians living abroad, or is diplomacy still the best path toward preserving African unity?

For now, Bianca Ojukwu's response suggests that while emotions are running high, Nigeria may be determined to keep the conversation at the negotiating table rather than the battlefield of economic reprisals.

I can't believe this woman was once a wife of great and fearless emeka Ojukwu....though I know that FG don't really care about citizens or their welfare ...a serious country should have surmounted SA ambassador to Nigeria and give them ultimatum to end this madness or face serious sanctions from the rest of African continent

I remain disappointed in Globacom and other indigenous organizations.

This should have been the key moment to take over this telecom and satellite tv space, with the growing disaffection against those Zulus.

Under normal circumstances, MTN and others should be packing their bags to leave... The boycott shouldn"t just be within Nigeria but all over Africa, especially West and East Africa.

Completely isolating South Africa shouldn't even be debated, and it shouldn't be difficult... But, Africans, just like typical Nigerians, have never learned to unite for great and impactful things.

No wonder the continent is perpetually being plundered and exploited by foreigners.

Smh!!!

For how long diplomacy when it's clearly not working...?

Sometimes the best diplomacy is to give someone a taste of their own medicine. Then their brains would reset.

At this point someone is still talking about or scared of further straining the relationship between both countries. When the other party clearly doesn't care about that relationship.

That's what you say when you don't have the cohones to do what it takes to respond to threat.

No one man- or country, has monopoly of madness!

God will punish who so ever say we should dialogue...don't they think of that before sending thousands of Nigerians out of south African?

I am totally disappointed with our Nigeria government.

I wasn't patient to read it all. Too impatient to nonsense.

You do not confront a man with arms with words.

Bianca is being political correct and senseless....

Gods, see our representatives? Imagine having a parent who won't protect you in any way.

Useless, if you ask this ancestor

It tells u clearly that this government does not have the much needed spine to tackle Nigeria's realities and problems.

Let them give way for a much younger person to assume leadership and fucccking deal with problems and challenges of Nigeria on all fronts...call a spade a spade for goodness sake!!

I cum in peace!!!

I agree with you...

Glo and indigenous companies are a huge disappointment. Glo can't even get its act rights to provide a competitive and stable network.

They are partly to blame for MTN exploiting and taking Nigerias for a ride with their shitty network!

Mediocrity might be embedded into an average Nigerian DNA.
Re: Bianca Ojukwu Steps In As Calls Grow To Sanction South African Firms (VIDEO) by motymop: 1:14pm On Jun 18
It will not work

Many of these companies are setup in a way that Nigerians are large shareholders

For instance, one of the largest shareholders in mtn Nigeria is the late pascal dozie.

MTN Nigeria is also one of the largest corporate taxpayers in the country.

The fact is that Nigeria does not have enough leverage over south africa

After nationalising their firms, you'll see how MTN and DSTV will start misbehaving so much that they would eventually be abandoned. Glo sef go hear am from MTN new owners by then, because Glo is owing MTN billions of naira currently.

Nigerians in Nigeria don't know how to run a firm. They will run it down .

Nothing works well here.

I deliberately packed up my Dstv decoder and dish during the very first Xenophobic riots.

Till date, I have never subscribed.

I tried the same with network by trying Glo for a bit... Bro, I had no choice but to switch back to mtn.

Disappointing is a mild term to describe the feeling.

The ones we nationalized back in the days where are they today?

Ordinary refinery, NNPC cannot run.

British Petroleum (BP): In July 1979, the federal government nationalized the London-based oil giant's assets entirely, which led to the expansion of the state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

Ignorant people, MTN is a publicly quoted company on NGX owned by alot of Nigerians so being a south African company means nothing. If you touch MTN Nigerian, shareholders in Nigeria will suffer more, there should be other ways to handle this

After how many years of operation. They can't even boast of a good footing abi foot hold in the Nigerian market.

Indigenous companies are busy going outside the Nigerian market to invest. Because they are blind to opportunities here
