Ogun Government Bans Graduation Ceremonies and End-of-Session Parties in Public and Private Schools

The Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has directed all public and private schools across the state to immediately discontinue the organization of graduation ceremonies and end-of-session parties.

The directive was contained in a circular issued by the Department of Private Schools, Abeokuta, and addressed to administrators of both public and non-state (private) schools through Zonal Education Officers.

According to the ministry, reports had reached the government that some school administrators were allegedly extorting parents and guardians under the guise of organizing graduation and end-of-session celebrations for learners. The ministry noted that such actions are contrary to resolutions reached during the 2025/2026 pre-resumption stakeholders’ meeting held in September 2025 at Lisabi Grammar School Hall, Abeokuta.

The circular emphasized that the Ogun State Government frowns upon the organization of graduation and end-of-session parties for pupils and students in all classes across both public and private schools in the state.

“As a result, no school owner should organize such gatherings henceforth,” the ministry stated.

The government further warned that any school found violating the directive would face appropriate sanctions.

School administrators have also been instructed to give the circular the widest publicity possible to ensure compliance among stakeholders.

The circular was signed by A.A. Bisiriyu, Director of Education (Private Schools), on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

The development is expected to generate discussions among school owners, parents, and education stakeholders, as graduation ceremonies and end-of-session celebrations have become common practices in many schools across Ogun State.

Only parents will understand what this solves for them.

This appears to be a decision made in anger. We can't just throw a blanket ban on something just because some people are exploiting it, why not fish out the bad eggs and regulate the program.

Will they also ban convocations in tertiary institutions? Or are the students not also being exploited by these schools?

Professor Arigbabu has done well with new innovations into Ogun educational space, he should not end with such a controversial decision.

School owners will fight this. Some elite schools will still do it discreetly under some funny arrangements and name

By their fruits you shall know them...those who did not read the article.

The reason is because schools are extorting parents and guardians for money in the name of graduation ceremony, not because of security concerns.

When govt does not recognise the work to do they end up doing what is not necessary. If you lots rule with sincerity parents won't have problem with the few thousands of naira we pay for our children's once a year celebration with their friends, classmates and schools mates in school, people they have known over time. You guys should fight insecurity, shun your corruption, embezzlement of public fund and great jobs. These will benefit the parents a million fold than this pettiness. I have paid for my daughter own and she will attend the graduation though she is not a graduand.

You people should focus on governance and stop making caricature of your selves.

That state knows how to major on the minors and minor on the majors. No roads, water, or security; they are rather worried about the school party. bunch of jokers.

In US they celebrate high school graduation because there is good job waiting for you. Most of them are not concerned about getting a degree or a bachelor's to celebrate the graduation to show that they have arrived.
Over here Ogun state government is making a clarification that celebrating high school graduation is pointless
