So qualifying for world cup is what makes a team formidable? If Nigeria was able to defeat "formidable" teams like Tunisia, Algeria and Egypt to win AFCON bronze, are they not formidable in their own rights? The best team in the continent couldn't even defeat them in open play, they had to drag the game to penalties despite the very biased officiating towards the host. Nigeria is not in the world cup but I can tell you for free that they can take out at least half of these so-called formidable teams in this world cup
Self dellusions. Give thumbs to Ivory Coast, pls and stop sentiments.

Round 1 is done and the real story isn't the big scorelines — it's how many of the "smaller" sides, especially the African teams, refused to roll over.

Look at who the favourites dropped points to:
- Brazil held 1-1 by Morocco
- Spain held 0-0 by Cape Verde
- Belgium held 1-1 by Egypt
- Portugal held 1-1 by DR Congo

Four of the so-called heavyweights stumbled, and African sides were behind all four. Add Ghana beating Panama 1-0 and Ivory Coast seeing off Ecuador 1-0, and this was arguably the strongest African opening round at a World Cup in years.

And it's not just luck. In this new 48-team format the best third-placed teams still qualify, so the favourites are playing it safe early instead of chasing the game — which hands the organised, compact sides exactly the low-event match they thrive in. That's why so many top seeds ground out 0-0 / 1-1, while the teams that actually went for it — Germany (7-1), Sweden (5-1), Norway (4-1) — piled on goals.

The danger flips in Round 2: the favourites who drew can't afford a second slip, so expect them to open up. That's usually where both the goals and the upsets come.

Question for the thread: which African side actually has the legs to finish top two in its group — and which one was flattering to deceive in Round 1?

It's not about noise rather it's about you guys comparing Messi with any player. No doubt that Ronaldo is a great player. He's achieved a lot which only few players can dream of. The point is that no player both dead and alive is to be compared with Messi. You guys mocked Leo more than we're doing today pre 2021 when he was yet to win any international trophy including your demigod, Ronaldo in his interview but Messi didn't respond. So you can't blackmail or bully us into jettisoning retaliation, never! angry

Lamine Yamal gets his first World Cup goal!

The young star has opened his World Cup account and, interestingly, it is also Spain's first goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

18 years old and already making his mark on football's biggest stage.

Many more to come?

Spain fans, how far do you think Yamal can take La Roja in this tournament?
