Absolutely loved this. I am not really into Chinese animation but I enjoyed this a lot. I heard the second season has started airing.

There is also a 2026 live action movie by the same name which I will watch next. I heard the movie is good as well

"Widow's Bay" S1 (2026)

The term "best show of the year" has been made redundant and should probably be taken with a grain of salt henceforth.


If there's one show I've heard about constantly over the past two months, it's this one. It kept popping up in my weekly subred recommend, so I patiently waited the full 10 weeks so I could binge it. After finally finishing it, I'm left wondering... what exactly was all the hype about?

The plot itself is simple, or at least, it's supposed to be. A town mayor is trying to market his town as the next big tourist destination, except strange things keep happening, all tied to an ancient curse. Then the show starts to convolute the story, asking far more questions than it provides answers for. By the last three episodes, I'd all but tapped out and wasn't the least bit interested in what they were trying to show me.

The thing that annoyed me the most was that it was billed as a comedy horror. The horror is definitely there, but I wasn't laughing, to say the least. There was a deadpan comic relief character who had a lot of potential, but she was seriously underutilized. There are genuinely great comedy horror shows out there, like "What We Do in the Shadows" (I don't even know if I've dropped the review of that one here), but this sadly isn't in the same league.

Perhaps if it hadn't been called the "show of the year" by what felt like 90% of the people who watched it, I might have enjoyed it more. But the level of quality I was expecting just wasn't there.

That's not to say you shouldn't watch it. Just keep your expectations firmly on the ground.
