chatinent:Interesting points. A few more points to add: 1. CPU Specs: the CPU tiers we often see as part of the hardware spec sheet (the Core i9s, i7s, i5s etc) are sometimes essentially the same CPU. Let me explain: During the manufacturing of the semiconductor, say the wafer is etched for an 8 core CPU with 4 L2 caches intended to be sold as a high tier Core i7 CPU, but the yield turns out lower, for example two cores and two caches are defective leaving 6 cores and two caches functional, Intel is not going to throw away the defective CPUs. Instead, they'll disable the two defective cores and two bad caches at the firmware level such that the system will never recognize these bad units. Intel will then rebrand these chips as 6-core/dual L2 'Core i5' instead of the intended Core i7, and sell it as a mid tier CPU. Same thing happens with Core i3s, which may have even more failed cores (eg 4 failed cores out of 8 ). Say only 1 core fails instead of 2, leaving 7 working. Intel will artificially disable a second core thereby creating a 6-core CPU to still fit the Core i5 branding. This core disabling is called binning. AMD does the same with their Ryzen series: a Ryzen 5 is a core-disabled Ryzen 7, for instance. The same applies for GPUs too, with the RTX 5080 being a binned 5090, etc. However, a few things to note. While this binning is most often the resort because of manufacturing yield defects, sometimes the chip designer deliberately creates a fewer-cores CPU/GPU if there's demand in the market. Let's say a certain segment prefers affordable PCs; the designer would lithograph a smaller die size with fewer cores to create mid-range and lower-tier chipsets. Disabling the cores means lower clock speed, thus less power draw and consequently less performance...and less cooling hardware required. 2. Dedicated GPUs: everything you wrote is true. Hardware-accelerated graphics via dedicated GPUs are always better than integrated GPUs built into the chipset. Dedicated GPUs have more graphics cores (dedicated compute units for better vertex shading, Ray and Path Tracing, etc). They therefore require more power draw and therefore more cooling. Sometimes what most people attribute to GPUs are actually CPU-bound activities (such as physics and fluid simulation, NPC AI scripting, game logic) meaning a good GPU also requires a capable CPU. Typically the dGPU has its own video memory as a buffer for storing and handling the frames generated in real-time. However, the trend is now moving towards APUs, or Accelerated Processing Units (AMD's terminology) such as the AMD in the PlayStation 5. This integrates the Zen CPU and RDNA GPU cores as well as memory on the same silicon, with memory shared as unified memory (same memory the OS uses, unlike the dedicated VRAM and normal RAM architecture). This is similar to what Apple does with its M series of Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3.....M5). In Apple's case, the GPU, which can have up to 80 cores, lives on the same silicon as the CPU cores and the NPU (neural processing units, for onboard AI processing) cores, as well as fixed, unified memory. Because this monolithic architecture, also called "System-on-a-Chip" (SoC) efficiently utilizes die space on the silicon wafers and uses advanced node fabrication (such as 3 nanometers) and the shorter bus between the chipset components, they're faster, efficient, and have a lower thermal design power (TDP, less power draw) and therefore need less or no active cooling like fans, massive heatsinks or even liquid cooling. And with the advent of AI and on-device neural processing, the GPU can do less work in generating native real-time graphics as the AI can upscale graphics, or even interpolate AI-generated frames between real frames to boost FPS without sacrificing much resolution. Such AI assistance come by way of technologies such as Nvidia Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), Intel Xe Super Sampling (XeSS), Sony PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR, only on the PS5 Pro.... lucky me 😂 ) Nvidia just came out with their RTX Spark SoC which uses an ARM-style Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC) architecture (similar to Apple's M-series SoC) for Windows and Linux systems, giving Windows PCs similar performance per Watt advantage of Apple computers. So basically, while dedicated GPUs are not going away soon, and given their primary use in AI data centers, the new SoC/APU designs, especially using the ARM architecture instead of the x86 architecture, means dedicated GPUs will be seen less and less on consumer laptops and PCs, especially with advances in AI-accelerated frame generation and resolution upscaling as well as ray and path tracing for better lighting, shadows, ambient occlusion, reflections, etc. Cheers.
