Court Sentences Mother, Sister of Late Terrorist Kingpin Battujo to 40 Years in Prison

By Ayooluwa Ayobami
June 19, 2026

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday sentenced two women arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) for their involvement in terrorism-related activities to 40 years in prison.

The convicted women, Safiya Salihu and Halima Abdullahi, are the mother and sister, respectively, of terrorist kingpin Kachallah Ibrahim Battujo, who was eliminated by Nigerian security forces on June 10, 2026, in a forest near Iluke in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

Justice Hauwa Joseph Yilwa handed down the sentences after both women pleaded guilty to Counts 2, 4 and 5 of the five-count terrorism-related charge brought against them by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation.

Both women escaped conviction on Counts 1 and 3, which bordered on receiving N490,300 from Battujo while being fully aware it was proceeds of terrorism, as well as receiving sponsorship for a holy pilgrimage funded with proceeds of terrorism. The Director of Public Prosecutions, Oyedepo Rotimi, SAN, urged the court to strike out both counts but convict them on the others.

According to Count 2, both women “aided and abetted the activities of Battujo, a known bandit kingpin, and passed information through telephone conversations to the said Battujo, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 26 of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.”

In addition to pleading guilty to Count 2, Battujo’s mother pleaded guilty to Count 5, which bordered on concealing information about the terrorism-related activities of her son. On her part, the sister of the late terrorist kingpin, in addition to pleading guilty to Count 2, also pleaded guilty to Count 4, which bordered on concealing information that her brother had illegally acquired firearms, which she saw when she visited his forest camp.

While the punishment for each count is 20 years, Justice Yilwa ordered that the sentences run concurrently, after which the convicts will undergo rehabilitation.

**The counts are as follows:**

**Count 1:** That you, HALIMA ABDULLAHI and SAFIYA SALIHU, female adults of Dungun Mu’aza, Sabuwa LGA, Katsina State, sometime in 2026 at Katsina State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, committed an offence when you received the sum of four hundred and ninety thousand, three hundred naira (N490,300) from Battujo, a known terrorist, which sum you reasonably ought to have known formed part of the proceeds of terrorism, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 21 of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

**Count 2:** That you, HALIMA ABDULLAHI and SAFIYA SALIHU, female adults of Dungun Mu’aza, Sabuwa LGA, Katsina State, sometime in 2026 at Katsina State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, committed an offence when you aided and abetted the activities of Battujo, a known bandit kingpin, and passed information through telephone conversations to him, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 26 of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

**Count 3:** That you, HALIMA ABDULLAHI and SAFIYA SALIHU, female adults of Dungun Mu’aza, Sabuwa LGA, Katsina State, sometime in 2026 at Katsina State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, committed an offence when you received sponsorship to travel for the Hajj pilgrimage from Battujo, a known bandit kingpin, using funds you reasonably ought to have known formed part of the proceeds of terrorism, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 21 of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

**Count 4:** That you, SAFIYA SALIHU, a female adult of Dungun Mu’aza, Sabuwa LGA, Katsina State, sometime in 2026 at Katsina State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, committed an offence by concealing information about the activities of Battujo, a known bandit kingpin, when you visited his forest camp and saw him in possession of firearms. This information, which you knew would be of material assistance in securing his apprehension, was not disclosed to any law enforcement or security officer as soon as reasonably practicable, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 16 of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

**Count 5:** That you, HALIMA ABDULLAHI, a female adult of Dungun Mu’aza, Sabuwa LGA, Katsina State, sometime in 2026 at Katsina State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, committed an offence when you concealed information about the activities of Battujo, a suspected bandit kingpin.

Terrorists led by Ibrahim Battijo invaded Iluke town in Kogi State and attempted to kidnap school children and other residents of the town.

They had lined up the children and were marching them into the forest when troops of 12 Brigade, Nigerian Army showed up and engaged the terrorists.

The leader of the terrorists, Ibrahim Battijo, was killed during the encounter, but his men carried his corpse into the bush.

Unfortunately some staff of the schools and an elderly resident of the community were killed before the troops arrived.

Residents of Iluke community in Kogi State describe what happened when terrorists invaded the town.

The woman is a teacher. She said that the terrorists came around 10am, she knows the time because they had rung the bell for break time.

She said a man came to the school and shouted that everybody should run because bandits were coming. She ran home, but a bandit captured her when she got home. She said that they also captured her mother and her mother told her that they had already shot her father dead.

She said that the bandits came on around 15 motorcycles. They gathered a large number of people and they wanted to march them into the forest. It was the sound of the gunshots from the soldiers that scared the terrorists and they ran away. They (the hostages) used the opportunity to escape. She said that the terrorists had already stolen all that they had.

She was crying that the terrorists killed her father.

She was talking about another man that was a Deeper Life member. He didn't run when others were running and the bandits killed him.

They interviewed another man and he said that he saw bandits on at least 10 motorcycles. He said that they were seating 2 or 3 bandits to a motorcycle. He said that he lived in Akure, but he came to the town to see his aged mother and make sure that she was OK.

He said that he was at the front of the group of people that the terrorists were marching into the forest. He said that he didn't think that the terrorists kidnapped anyone, because he was at the front and he would have been one of the people that would have been kidnapped.

He said that the terrorists fled when the soldiers started shooting and he used the opportunity to escape.

TROOPS OF 12 BRIGADE FOIL TERRORISTS’ ATTEMPT TO ABDUCT SCHOOL CHILDREN IN KOGI STATE

Troops of 12 Brigade Nigerian Army under 2 Division Nigerian Army have foiled an attempted abduction of pupils at Iluke Community in Kabba Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, thwarting the plans of terrorists who disguised themselves in military uniforms to carry out the attack.

The successful operation was conducted on 10 June 2026 following credible information provided by vigilant members of the community who alerted troops on patrol to the activities of the terrorists within the area. Acting swiftly on the intelligence, the troops immediately mobilised and advanced to the community to prevent the criminals from achieving their objective.

On arrival, troops discovered that the terrorists had already assembled pupils of Iluke Primary School with the intention of abducting them. Without delay, the troops engaged the terrorists, compelling them to abandon their mission and flee the area. During the encounter, one terrorist was neutralised while several others escaped with gunshot injuries upon the approach and engagement by the troops.

Sadly, before the arrival of troops, the terrorists had killed a teacher and a resident of the community. Their actions further underscore the criminal and inhumane nature of the terrorists who continue to target innocent civilians.

The prompt response of the troops prevented what could have been a large scale abduction of school children and undoubtedly saved many lives. The operation also reflects the commitment, vigilance and professionalism of troops of 12 Brigade in safeguarding lives and protecting vulnerable communities across the Brigade’s area of responsibility.

Troops are currently in pursuit of the fleeing bandits. Additionally, considering the interconnected nature of the community to adjoining Kwarra and Niger State, other security outfits in the neighbouring state have been intimated to block fleeing bandits. Other measures aimed at denying terrorists freedom of action, reassuring residents and preventing any further attacks have been emplaced. Members of the public are encouraged to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information to enhance ongoing efforts to rid the state of criminal elements.

More information about the Kogi incident.

The terrorists also attacked the secondary school in the community. The students were writing their WAEC exams. Luckily troops of 12 Brigade, Nigerian Army got the information and engaged the terrorists. One terrorist was killed and others escaped with bullet wounds.

I have previously written about the attack on a primary school in the same community.

The Kogi State governor has visited the community. This is a video of his visit.

The Brigadier leading from the front.

The terrorists took the corpse of Ibrahim Battijo and buried it in the forest. Troops of 12 Brigade, Nigerian Army got information about the location of the grave.

The brigade commander, 12 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Karim Sidi led his men into the forest to exhume the body and take it for DNA tests and autopsy.

They got two helicopters from the Office of the National Security Adviser (a silver helicopter and a police helicopter). The helicopters hovered above as they exhumed the body.

This is the video that Brigadier General Sidi shot of him and his men in the forest.

I suspect that Ibrahim Battijo invaded Iluke and planned to kidnap school children in order to use them as bargaining chip for his mother and sister. Basically, "If you release my mother and sister, then I'll release the school children".

A terrorist has previously used this tactic when his father was arrested by the DSS.

He failed, thanks to 12 Brigade Nigerian Army.

My post from June 11th.

This is the FCT commissioner of police. He said that they got intelligence that kidnappers often come to the FCT through a forest in the border area between the FCT and Kaduna. The kidnappers capture people in Abuja and take them through the forest to Kaduna.

He and his men camped in the forest for 4 days and on the 4th day they got lucky. They encountered the kidnappers, killed 2, arrested 2 and some fled with gunshot wounds. The police were able to free several hostages. You can see that the commissioner is armed with his rifle and that he personally took part in the operation.

Some Nigerians are asking why they arrested 2 of the kidnappers. They want the kidnappers to be killed.

Nigerian and international law states that the kidnappers must not be killed if they surrender, if they are apprehended and if they are unable to resist.

BAD DAY IN THE DEN OF THE WICKED

2 Bandits deservingly met their end today at the hands of our brave security force.

What we know:

□ Armed bandits invaded Paze community in Byazhin ward, Bwari Area Council. They abducted five residents (including a pastor) and shot a local vigilante named Shuaibu Yerima.

□ The security operation (Tuesday night, ~9:00 p.m.): Led by FCT Police Commissioner CP Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, it involved the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Kubwa Area Command, local hunters, and vigilante groups. The operation targeted Paze and Byazhin communities.

● OUTCOME

□ All five abducted victims were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

□ Two bandits were killed in a crossfire exchange.

□ Two suspects were arrested: Icheh Mohammadu and Abubakar Usman.
Two AK-47 rifles with magazines were recovered.

□ Other gang members fled into nearby hills.

True patriotism is not just loving your country; it is standing firmly behind those who bleed to keep it safe.

We, patriotic and responsible citizens of this great republic, rise - as we always do - to acknowledge and applaud the valiant efforts of our security forces. Their courage is not celebrated enough. Their sacrifice is not rewarded enough.

Not every night ends in mourning. Some nights, the dawn comes armed. Let the wicked take note: Nigeria will not be swallowed.

Good Evening Severally.

I seriously don't understand this govt... The other day, they sent a pos operator to 20 years jail time for working with terrorist.

Not this...

But the main terrorists are been giving amnesty.

It good that these criminals associate are been sentenced, but the criminals themselves need to face death penalty...

So the actual bandits that killed, maimed and kidnapped people were tagged as "repentant bandits", rehabilitated and reintegrated into the society while these ones will be the one to do jail term. This government is a joke.

The troops killed Ibrahim Battijo, but look at spin doctors trying to turn it into a bad thing and saying that terrorists are let go.

Was Ibrahim Dattijo let go? Or Ibrahim Battijo is not an actual terrorist?
