I believe that husbands whose wives abuse domestic helps should also be arrested and investigated.
Too often, we hear terrible stories of children and domestic workers being tortured inside homes. Recently, reports emerged of a woman who allegedly poured hot water and candle wax on a young child in her care. Such cruelty and evil act does not usually happen in one minute or in complete secrecy. Someone in the house often sees the signs, hears the cries, or notices the injuries.

A husband should not be allowed to simply say, "I didn't know." If a child is being abused repeatedly in a home, every responsible adult in that home should answer questions from the police. If investigations show that the husband knew about the abuse, ignored it, encouraged it, or failed to report it, then he should face the law alongside his wife.

Children and domestic helps are human beings, for crying out loud. A home should be a place of safety, not a place of fear and torture. Holding all responsible adults accountable will help discourage abuse and protect vulnerable people.
Silence can sometimes be as dangerous as the abuse itself.

And since this issue is common place in our society today, there should be a law holding husbands of these women equally responsible for these crimes against children and domestic help.

I’m joking because your thread is pointless. Tradition dictates that men should be the head of the home. It is not so in many cases. There are some households where the abused child is the woman’s relative. Once the man tries to put things in order, a family meeting is called where her uncles and aunts will choose to berate his authority. We all know once bitten, twice shy. The man will look away and do his thing. Also, the husband wasn’t the one who did the abusing. What concerns him in the matter?

My own be say once a woman starts maltreating the help, the husband should just return the child to its people/parents.

Yes, that is why there are charges for people who were accessories to a crime. If men can threathen fire and brimstone over their wives infidelity or bad character, it means the only reason they suddenly become handicapped when a child is abused is because they are equally as wicked or do not care. Which based on experience is the case most times.


If his wife gets 5yrs, he should get 1.

Nigeria needs strong laws against child abuse and labour of any form. Issues concerning kids should not be treated as domestic cases to be settled in the village square. They are humans deserving of justice.

Well said. There is no way a supposed good man would watch his wife do things like this if he isn't doing same or worse to the child. Men have beaten up their wives for less. Sent her back to her father's house join. They cannot convince me they are blind to this or innocent. We know as e dey go.

There's no basis to arrest the spouse of the culprit in a domestic violence. It's just like saying that the spouses or relatives of those who commit crimes should be arrested. That doesn't make sense at all! When I heard of the husband of the Anambra woman being arrested, I immediately knew it was people like you who are always quick to call for the heads of men in every unpleasant situation that must have triggered his arrest. This is because, unless the woman was not there at the time and perhaps the police decided to hold the man pending when the woman gets arrested, there's no basis for arresting the man when the child already identified the one who abused him.

Spouses of people who commit crimes can be arrested if they aided, abetted or concealed the crime. If you know your spouse or sibling is torturing someone (in this case a minor) every other day and you don't report the crime, you can very well be arrested and charged. While there are nuances to it, legal duty to care/protect should suffice for a child under your roof.

This is not just a "crime", it is child abuse, child labour and recurring child endangerment. There are many cases of husband and wife being charged for a crime committed majorly by one. Thank you.

So, would you arrest an innocent man simply because he is married to a woman accused of abusing a domestic worker?

If you were in his position, would you truly consider that justice, or would you see it as punishment for someone else's actions?

I concur with the op. In fact, this has been my opinion for a long time now. The husband to a woman who abuses a child should be arrested and made to face the same punishment as the wife provided that he was well-aware of the on-going abuse, and let the child constantly go through the harrowing trauma of the physical abuse. He is complicit in the crime and should be made to face the same music as the wife at the court of law.

I totally agree. The husbands are complicit. They aided a crime. The weakness of the husbands was instrumental to the trauma of a child.

You might be saying some reality somewhere But thst excuse no hold water, if she is mal treating her relatives under your toof, asa man even if she doesnt regard you, reach out to the child parent let them come nd see there child situation

To add to your suggestion, I believe the man should be punished more than the wife.


Any man that looks away while his wife abuses or maltreats a domestic worker, be it a child or a teen or adult should be punished. No vulnerable person under your household should be abused or maltreated for any reason should be the campaign.


Many domestic workers remain in such homes due to abject poverty and fear of going back to where they came from, so the law should protect them even as they are trying to make a living.



Another thing Nigerian government from federal to LGA should look into is how to redefine and sanitize the domestic and care work sector in Nigeria.


They are essential sectors that should be looked into by the government.


Create a department under the Ministry of Women Affairs and call it Domestic & Care Service Department.


Let this department create a blueprint for domestic and care work in Nigeria and then invite application from organizations or businesses to come register as domestic work and care service delivery companies to be licensed through a thorough licensing process to vet their capacity.


Then encourage well meaning Nigerians to establish domestic work and care service delivery companies that must be licensed with the State and LGA of operation. These businesses will then hire domestic workers and carers who must work on two or three shifts per day; morning, afternoon and night shifts. Only people from 16 years and above can be employed and must be vetted thoroughly because if any issue arise the company or business owner will be held accountable so you must vet the people you hire before deploying them to various homes and households seeking for their services.


Government should then have official website where Nigerians can go to verify licensed domestic and care service delivery companies before engaging domestic workers from them.


This will sanitize the system and also encourage tertiary institution students to start doing domestic and care work as side hustle or part time job to assist them fund their education. It will also create job opportunities in Nigeria and once its fully setup, Nigeria can then officially ban using anybody under 16 years as house help or carer completely and make it a criminal offense with long jail term.

Don't mind those hypocritical women and simp men, there is no crime for failing to help someone, no matter how wicked it sounds. Even if you see your neighbour dying or somebody killing him, so far you did not have any hand in it you are not an accessory. The law is not emotional. So they should punish an innocent man because he failed to do anything. Women please take responsibility of your Actions and stop blaming a man who may be morally obligated to do something but not legally obligated. Law and morality are two parallel lines of river which never mix.
