BVAS cleaned up the system, but INEC under Tinubu's regime is fast taking us back to the dark days by neglecting BVAS in the electoral process.

I don't know the intention behind this thread. But, the comparison is unfair. The 1999 - 2011 elections are the most corruptly done in Nigeria. Election results were mostly written. As compromised as the last elections might be, they are still miles ahead of those conducted between 1999 - 2011. This is the reason you don't see those massive numbers like before. During that time, the voter turnout was usually well above 90%, which is unrealistic, even in advanced democracies like America, Canada, Germany, e.t.c.

The figures Falae or Obasanjo got in 1999 are totally unreliable. If you insist on doing the comparison, then, it will be scientifically fair and sound to compare the percentages those figures represent in their respective election cycles.

You are very correct. I wrote a similar comment before reading yours. Elections held between 1999 and 2011 were totally unreliable.

All election before BVAS was rubbish and even now it has become better as when I went to register, an INEC officer told me that any double registration is a waste of time and that he can assure anyone that does it the PVC will not come out as it will be detected and expunged

Back then in the East, Falae may have won but some politicians wrote results to the contrary. In today's elections if you don't go for accreditation at all, your card can not be used and turnout will be low and the only way the politicians can rig is if the other party has no agent at the unit and they are able to bribe the returning officer to write results in their favor but they can't write results in total above the number of accredited voters

The best democracy is to be represented according to the tax you generate. If you want more representation then generate more revenue and there is no real need for general elections. Let federating units do their elections and send people to the center while those people can employ a government and keep them under control

Two things are instructive...

One, with the benefit of hindsight, the SE has voted for governments at the centre that have performed relatively better. So their voting patterns can be justified to an extent.

Two, what the some Yorubas accuse the Igbos of doing, they have also done.

In 1999, Falae was the choice of the SW, and he got about 85% of the votes in the SW.

In 2003, the choice was between a Yoruba man, northerner and Igbo man. The SW gave the Yoruba man about 95% of the votes. Mind you, Ojukwu, a prominent Igbo man also contested that election, but the Igbos still gave OBJ about 80% of their votes.

In 2007, it was between 3 northerners. But due to the issues with that election, it is highly disputed.

In 2011, it was a choice between a southerner and a northern, and the SW gave majority of their votes to GEJ.

In 2015 and 2019, when a Yoruba man was on the ballot for VP, the Yorubas gave about 55% of their votes to the party with a prominent Yoruba son.

And in 2023, it was about 53% votes to a Yoruba person.

So, accusing the Igbos of block votes to Obi is not really fair. Every region does it to some degree. The SE might be more prominent because they often go all in for whom they support for President.

Besides, history has proved the SE right for rejecting buhari and bat, two of the worst democratically elected leaders Nigeria has been unfortunate to have.
