The only way light can become readily available is via cost reflective tarrif.

The reason why GSM is readily available is simple. It was allowed to charge a cost reflective tarrif from the word go...which meant that

1. Investors were willing to spend money. Heck some states poured money into what is now Airtel back in the day

2. Banks were willing to lend money, because they knew they would get it back with interest.

3. The companies parents themselves were ready to pour money into the GSM expansion and improvement because they knew it was a profitbale thing

Power sector has never had those advantages, no one is going to invest in a sector where the majority are underpaying and 20% are not paying (unlike GSM, where 100% of consumers pay, and the era of cheats has long since ended)....hence we got GSM in abundance, and power is not in abundance

Plus discos and gencos poured in money from the word go. They did not see return of investment because underpaying and subsidy. Result...losses. Massive losses.
I get your point and at the same time I won't criticize the citizens that beckon on govt to subsidize the power bills. It's not bad for govt to assist her citizens in one way or other subsidy it's not an ambiguous thing to request from a govt. We basically provides everything for ourselves despite paying heavy taxes

So recently, Peter Obi made a comment that he was going to improve our power supply by 10000mw, which would take us up to 32000 mw...which should be enough for us to get light 24/7 (subject to the Siemens project working)...and the response was tinubu supporters making fun of Obi as a man without ideas, while Obi supporters praised their man as being wisdom incarnante.

Except that Obi did not tell us how he plans to do it.

Which essentially begs the question, how do we vote for a guy who promises us something, but does not tell us how to do it.

Which leads me back to Tinubu. IN 2023, tinubu said...if you vote me and I do not give you constant power supply, vote me out in 2027.

Naturally tinubu supporters were praising their man as being a tough minded leader, etc, etc....while Obi people are now calling in the receipts. Man has not done as promised so he should be kicked out.

Which leads me to my point.

Tinubu and obi never/have not told Nigerians how they intend to improve power supply.

The truth of the matter is, we have a plan, laid out by the experts, about power supply. A decent , strong plan....cost reflective tarrifs, ending power theft, and rolling out metering.

But neither tinubu nor obi, nor even atiku or any potential candidate would mention that because it does not win votes. (Sowore would probably announce a plan to give 24 hour light a day at N1 per kwh).

Nigerians , regardless of political party, like hearing populist language. If a leader came into office and started doing the things the experts have said we should do, he would be voted out. Or chased out. You will see the Fulani herdsmen marching with the Igbo farmer, the Yoruba trader marching with his Hausa counterpart, and there would be riots.

And the leader would be voted out.

That is why whoever takes office, won't be allowed to improve power because Nigerians think that electricity should be free of charge.

When in reality, it is not possible.

Electricity costs money. If you won;t pay for it in cost reflective tarrif, you will pay for it in generator and inverter monies. That is what Band A taught us.

And on that Band A, the idea of tinubu was not original. India has a similar system, present for decades, that commercial and industrial properties would pay a cost reflective tarrif and the profits would be used to pay for subsidising the poor farmers and rural people

And after doing that, has power supply in India improved? (No.).

Infact India is planning to make everyone pay cost reflective tarrfs in five years time.

SO, if it didn't work in India, how e go work in NIgeria?

The only way we can get free power is to take massive loans totalling nearly 2/3rd of our budgets for the next ten or more years...and while it may give us enough light, it would also put us in heavy debt for it.

In 2025, Prof Barth Nnaji, who is definetly not a Tinubu supporter put it well

SAUCE : LEADERSHIP NEWSPAPER

I have been saying the above for years, but people here abuse me, so I may as well quote the actual expert, who is a qualified engineer, a former ministar of power, and an owner of a GENCO.

And he is not the first or the last to state that this needs to be done. PwC have said it, several experts have been saying it, a BBC report said it, and so forth.

Yet, Nigerians and their candidates choose to believe the fiction of corruption or some evil Western zionist overmind does not want to give us light.

It is easier to believe conspiracy theory fiction

Good afternoon.

I expcet to be abused and to be told about other countries that somehow magically give free power(the macs won't add that those countries pay for it with heavy taxes, or heavy debt).
You don't have idea of what you are saying and it is annoying hearing you repeat same theory all along.

Power problem in Nigeria is not a problem of cost reflective issue, it is purely leadership insensitivity to the importance of electricity to economic growth.

Have you asked yourself why has no state government embarked on state power generation, transmission and distribution? It is because the willpower is not there but these state governors can spend money to marry wives, pilgrimages and donation to religion centres.

Electricity should not be expensive the way you portray it because the technology presently used to generate, transmit and distribute are not complex.

Again the lifespan of most of these equipment can be way above 50 to 100years before replacement, so what exactly is driving the cost that makes you think Nigerians can't afford it.

Your argument of bypass is very weak because there are many ways that can be curbed.

Stop making excuses for the moribund distribution companies that deserves nothing less than total ban

Well, Nigeria cannot pay subsidies for any thing

We have been subsidising power for over 50 years, and in all that time it is not working...because most of our revenue comes from the sale of oil, and oil prices are very fluctuant, plus oil production has been falling. And we have a low tax uptake. Which means that we have been and have to borrow to finance part of the budget.

And that is before we even talk of stealing.

If we were to try to subsidise petrol...which most want back today, it would cost us somewhere around 20-30 trillion naira annually.

Experts say we need somewhere around 10-14 trillion naira annually to fix power..to the level that is needed to keep everyone on the grid on light. Oil prices, strait of hormuz regardless, are projected to be low in the future. Either we tax everyone, which everyone including tinubu does not love, or we over borrow to pay for good electricity...leaving us with more debt.

If we were to try to subsidise petrol...which most want back today, it would cost us somewhere around 20-30 trillion naira annually. That's half our budget, that has a deficit of 23trillion naira that needs to be funded by loans

We are not fools ooo. If current tarrifs are cost reflective. Power is not something small companies can just generate casually. These current owners of the system are milking us and want more before making power constant. If they are making losses, why hasnt any sold his or her power company?

Chap above me thinks that we can bake bread at N1000 and sell it at N100
He also thinks we can refine fuel from crude at N800 and sell it at N100
He also thinks we can create a Kwh of power at N210 and above and sell it at N10

And anyone who disagrees with him is an agent of westernizaton and a Tinubu supporter

Meanwhile TInubu thinks exactly as he does, considering that he keeps subsidies in power in place.

I think he should hand back his diploma. Parents wasted some cash on him. He also should lead the protelarian vanguard against the bourgeouisie.

grin
If this is the case, has anyone sold off the loss incurring power company?
You cannot lie your way out always when quantitative metric is involved.
Truth is the owners want a criminal profit margins before they can take a token from the profit and re-invest into the system to make it better and have us on our way to constant power. That won't happen because renewable is cheaper than the bullshit they are proposing.

Quality electricity and affordable tarrifs can't coexist. That's OP's point. You have to choose one.

For your information, a standard home (TV, fridge, lights) consumes at least 5 units per 24 hours. That cost about 1200 naira. Calculate that in a month and tell me the percentage of Nigerians to that can afford that.
What's your conclusion?
Should it be made available or not?

Right.
Power problem in Nigeria is not a problem of cost reflective issue, it is purely leadership insensitivity to the importance of electricity to economic growth.
1.We have been hearing this propaganda for ages. If it was true, they won't have given us any roads, phones, and a host of other things
2. Besides it is in the interest of the government that power be there
3. And that means that you think that Professor Nnaji is also wrong and has no idea what he is talking about too. Okay.
Have you asked yourself why has no state government embarked on state power generation, transmission and distribution? It is because the willpower is not there but these state governors can spend money to marry wives, pilgrimages and donation to religion centres.
Just read the comments on my post,e specially the ones that call me names for asking for cost reflective tarrifs.

Most states can't do power generation because their citizens will not agree to a cost reflective tarrif. That means that no bank would lend money for the project, no investor , even a state indigene would invest his money, and it would cost the state a lot of money

There is a reason why governors prefer to attract factories...it yields quick money.

See how tinubu and the federal government are blocking cost reflective tarrifs. Ya think a state governor would build power station, and connection to the entire state, and then turn around and charge N10 per kwh? Especially since gas is paid for in dollars and every component needed to bring power is made abroad...meaning maintenance and upgrade costs are already high from day 1?

Better read Prof Nnaji's comment I quoted, abeg.

Electricity should not be expensive the way you portray it because the technology presently used to generate, transmit and distribute are not complex.
Well, the tech for phone and internet is not complex, yet it works because cost relfective tarrif

Also, again, we don't make most of the components for good electricity transmission. That increases costs drastically. Add maintenance and upgrade costs, and it's a big amount of money

Most states that cannot even fund hospitals and schools well enough, dem go build world class power company? OK o.
Again the lifespan of most of these equipment can be way above 50 to 100years before replacement, so what exactly is driving the cost that makes you think Nigerians can't afford it.
Sigh. Read Prof NNAJI again

Also, you go use a car for fifty years? Or even twenty years? Okay. You have forgotten that things degrade over time? That's even a big part of the reason whyw e have bad power supply..we kept on using old equipment way past their expiry date.

Flawed argument here.
Your argument of bypass is very weak because there are many ways that can't be curbed.
Sorry, but you are not making sense here. Next.

Stop making excuses for the moribund distribution companies that deserves nothing less than total ban
So a company should produce power at N200 and above per kwh and sell it below N100 per kwh for the majority, and the government is not paying enough subsides, and gas prices are rising.?

RIght. Good evening and have a good day, comrade.

People are in charge of their water and power, because people do not want to pay the cost reflective tarrif for power and water.

If people paid the price for water and power, it would bite their pocket, but they won't need to be in charge of their water or power.

Both are expensive. You will pay a cost reflective tarrif, or you will pay the equivalent for borehole and inverter plus maintenance.
You are still not making sense, if it is cheap for me to provide my water and generate my power through solar why is it more expensive if government mass produce it where economies of scale comes in.

I've done my calculation based on my investment in my household power supply and I discovered it is more cheaper than what people in band A and B are paying

Cost-reflective tariffs are needed in Nigeria’s power sector to eliminate the massive financial shortfalls across the value chain, ensuring that the true cost of generating, transmitting, and distributing electricity is covered. This pricing structure is essential to attract private investment, fund vital infrastructure maintenance, and guarantee reliable power supply

In the Northern part of Nigeria, there is plenty of heat and sunshine wasting away, we can establish a solar power generating companies in the northern part of Nigeria that will help with existing megawatts.

Theory is different from practical. If a Physician decides to administer plethora of required drugs all at once to a patient , that patient may enter shock and die. Is that what you want? Nigeria went to deep shock with the oil subsidy removal, and gradually settling down with the aftermath and recovery and election approaching you want Tinubu to remove subsidy on power now? Buhari was afraid of a coup and could not remove oil subsidy until June 2023 when he will be away. Wisdom is profitable to direct. i will recommend the Government settle the over 4 thrillion naira debt and counting. Some battles be left till the second term. If many kids are ask to vote their parents, they will vote them out for the parent not allowing them to eat unlimited candies and junk foods but veggies and balance diet and also forcing them to sleep early afterall the parent is not sleeping early.

I already come up with a solution but not mature yet for online discussion.

Acting is better than mouth running

Modified:

Let me give a hint. We need as many as transformers across streets. That's number one major cause of the power failure.

Nepa brought light within a mins, inside same house, one is using boiling ring, one is using iron while another one is using electric stove.

In such situation, it's the transformer that will suffer it , if the transformer can't hold the heat, its going back to the power line
Nigeria's case is that there is not enough power ( less than 6000MW ) injected to the National grid system. Nigeria needs nothing less than 50000 MW to be currently comfortable. To be a little more industrialized like Brazil and south Africa, Nigeria needs Around 200,000 MW. Secondly, The Transmission line capacity is very low. Thirdly, the Discos are not truly professionally operating like global counterparts.

It can't be cheaper. Generating electricity through solar is extremely expensive when compared with what you gotten from Nepa. For a solar setup that can work like nepa, power equipment like nepa etc, per unit kwhr can't be less than #500/units

Well, we tried subsides for over 50 years. And we still do not have light.

Time we tried something different. And something that has worked in other African countries.

Ivory Coast for example. Last time they had a general nationwide blackout was in the 1980's. IN 1993, they deregulated. Before you shout corruption...the leader who did the deregulation was not only corrupt but also a tribalist and a bigot. Well, they have light 24/7

Also Ghana. Ghana has cost reflective tarrifs. Yeah, government does do some control, but not to the level where the companies there cannot even break even...they are still selling above the cost of production

Again we have tried for over 50 years with price controls and subsides. It is not effing working.

chinchum:
Well, the 4 trillion debt was acutally government cutting it from 6 trillion. And that is just what the government owes in terms of subsidy, there are other debts owed the power companies.

Plus it won't attract investments. Investors want to see ROI and the only way to do that is by...allowing cost reflective tarrifs, not by doing price controls and subsidies that do not get paid on time.

PLus subsides only cover the difference between the cost of production and the government set price. It doesn't allow for the companies to make a profit.

For your information electricity bills have gone up by a factor of 3. Three times more expensive than it was in 2023 when this government got into office. Has the services improved by that same metric.

Now what is your response to this.
ELectricity bills are still below the level needed for profits to be made, which is between N200-250.

Most people pay anywhere between N70-180 per kwh. Subsidy payments are irregular...meaning that

1. NO one would invest in the power sector, because the risk is too high

2. And the power sector won't be able to make enough of a profit

The losses from the majority of consumers is even making it difficult to give Band A people good enough electricity.

Time for deregulation. It's worked in Ghana and Ivory coast.

Well, at the end, Nigerians seem to want their country to be a communist nation, a nation that provides all the goodies, at a large and larger cost of the debt, until it all falls apart.

Cost reflective tarrifs.
