From all you listed, it shows that Nigeria is actually retrogressing. Even the farming you talked about is a plus. It is nice if people have gardens where they farm as it shows the availability of lands and organic food in the society.
Yes if you say Nigeria is retrogressing, I will agree with you because we have neglected things that were working for us. In the year 1993 , I remember vividly that our neighbor then was a secondary school principal, he had 2 grown up boys that were in SS classes and other children. Farming in those days was a normal thing for every household. This man and his boys usually farm all their farm crops year in, year out. E.g all the cassava that will later be processed into Garri and cassava flower that the whole family of 6 will eat all through the year, same with ebery other grains that the family will consume all through the year and there will be excess that will later be taken to Market for some money. He was a secondary Principal who was also earning salary.. all they had to spend their money on was petty things like fish and sometimes meat because his trap usually catches animal. Now with Technology advancements, everyone wants to be the tech guru, oil and gas business mogul. People prefer white collar jobs by so doing abandoning our natural or normal way of life as Africans. Everyone wants to move to the city, with inception of yahoo, young folks are not willing to learn anything but they want to blow like Wizkid or hushpuppi.. our food production as growing Population country is another factor to talk about. Is our food production outputs sufficient enough for our population? You see we have lots of factors that are causing Nigeria’s current situations. One of it is Migration other occurrence like the banditry issues.. brotherman we can’t finish this debate about why this country is like this today. My advice. We should all work on ourselves as individuals because you see those that will be power in the nearest future are not going to be people that are not part of us.. there can never be a good leader if we don’t have good followers because the leaders will emerge from the followers. It’s Monday morning I rest my case here.

Mobile phones (GSM) was introduced sometimes after year 2,000 except those that were using Turaya and not everyone can afford it then. yes there was Pipe borne water and free education as you've mentioned but don’t forget that before lots of student would go to school back then they would have to hawk one or two items to sell or even after school,

let me remind you, nearly all family usually have small or big farm that they are engaging back then.. and some will have to go farm first before thinking of going to school and that was why food production was sufficient back then except if you reside in Lagos or some other cities.. do we still do the family farming as much as it was in the 90s? Life was good but there were other things missing which the new generation are enjoying like the technology advancement. If you attended higher institution then you would know what it means to get your Medicaid done or if you have to borrow materials from the school Library. With the use of internet and AI you now have all information at your palm.. even in the 70s when they said Nigeria was better. They were also suffering and majorly of Nigerians back then are living primitively. Like I said earlier things will never be the same.. we should be sure that we don’t stop evolving.
Was unemployment as high as it is today since All Promises Cancelled, APC came into power chanting change but delivering shege?

Shege of extreme poverty and insecurity, enhanced by worsening corruption.

The minimum wage was also 3000 naira if I recollect so what exactly was so glamorous about it if one must subject it to reason. Petrol has never been cheap Nigerians just didn't pay the true price at the pumps you paid for it in underdevelopment in all other facets of public life.

There was also flippant armed robbery, although kidnapping outside of some incidents along the SE corridor was non existent.
That was the minimum wage before 1999.

By 2015, it had risen to N18,000 that could buy much more than N70,000 today. We also had less unemployment, which means that the people in jobs didn’t have to share their income with their jobless relatives and friends.

Lastly, as for unemployment. How many jobs do we have that we all want to be employed into in this country? This is the reality of Nigeria. Going to higher institution of learning is not enough. While you’re school, you should be engaging in order skill development engagement.. if we don’t learn new ideas and innovation how do we intend to survive when starting up businesses even require capital. We must learn to create possibilities ( possible ways of surviving and making fortunes) for ourselves. If you don’t have Job now be sure that you’re engaging in learning ideas now. If you’re wondering to what to learn. Go and learn installation of solar panel or CCTV. Solar is the future of anything that has to do with power. Meaning that in nearest future every household will be making use of solar. Think of other things that you know that can give you the future that you deserve. Don’t wait for anyone nor the government. Peace

There are more stinkilng rich people now than anytime in the history of this country. It is just the poor that's getting the short end of the stick. The poor Nigerians that I knew way back eats well, until the 80s when poverty pro max started. This widespread poverty and lack of expansion of infrastructure like running water is the result of massive corruption. I limit expectations and don't expect dividends of democracy from any of these politicians, when it is a known fact that money changed hands before majority of present day politicians achieved victory.

How can you make money from self employment if local, state and federal government officials are stealing the commonwealth that should employ civil servants to make public utilities and services available for everyone?

How can you make money from self employment when leaders looters are stealing what should provide basic infrastructure to facilitate life for all?

If oyinbo people allow their own leaders to steal anyhow by focusing only on self employment instead of expecting government jobs, why would we be attracted to their cold, racist countries huh

Kudos for the throwback.. Pictures that bring back old memories for the most part good ones. Most of these pictures also reflect on the passage of time as a center piece of vanity..I saw a recent pic of the Veteran Pete a few days back, when you match it against the ones I just here, it's safe to say nothing lasts forever..

Just to add to your list is the original bad girl of the 90's Sandra Achums. Victoria Inyama too was good, so was Uche and Georginia Iwuoha..

You have summarised our extreme poverty journey very well sir.

The saddest part of all this is how our leaders looters take the money abroad to make oyinbo countries even better than ours. Money that provides jobs in oyinbo countries to make pipe borne water available to all homes, among other basic government services and utilities.

How can we work our way out of this quagmire conundrum huh

PANDORA PAPERS: Buhari visited Tinubu in corruption-tainted London villa acquired by Oyetola

Governor Oyetola, a relative of Mr Tinubu, may have sabotaged his own country by buying the exotic property as Nigeria made to seize it.

ByNicholas IbekweandTaiwo-Hassan Adebayo October 7, 2021 in Headline Stories, Pandora Papers Reading Time: 8 mins read

It was a meeting of two of Nigeria’s most influential politicians in London – President Muhammadu Buhari was visiting political kingmaker and senior member of his ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu.

In July, the presidency announced that Mr Buhari was heading to London for an education summit. The office also added that the president would also see his doctors for “medical check-up”.

Coincidentally, Mr Tinubu, who had travelled to London earlier, was also receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment in the British capital. So, a perfect setting for both men to meet was created.

I appreciate the fact that you said you limit your expectations from the government.. everyone shouldn’t wait for government to fix their life for them. Everyone should fix theirs first.. there’s lots of chances of making fortunes in Nigeria but when you adopt pessimism you kill such chances.. ire ooo

There has never been a time that Nigeria had less unemployment than we have today, more than 60% of Nigerians across the country work in informal employment, an even higher number estimated at over 80% are functionally underemployed and lack a consistent defined earnings.

Less than 30% pay into a PAYE, insurance fund or pension fund.

Please let go of this grand nostalgia, what we had in between the 1999 and 2015 and even up till 2023 was a false reality that was dependent on corrupt money washing down in tid bits.

Nigerians now have the opportunity to rewrite their story along a path that can lead to collective growth but that path is full of thorns and nestles but it's a path we must cross every other nation we look up to crossed that path, the Americans, china Malaysia Singapore.

We can't keep living a lie of subsidy and market disparity.
