There has never been a time that Nigeria had less unemployment than we have today, more than 60% of Nigerians across the country work in informal employment, an even higher number estimated at over 80% are functionally underemployed and lack a consistent defined earnings.

Less than 30% pay into a PAYE, insurance fund or pension fund.

Please let go of this grand nostalgia, what we had in between the 1999 and 2015 and even up till 2023 was a false reality that was dependent on corrupt money washing down in tid bits.

Nigerians now have the opportunity to rewrite their story along a path that can lead to collective growth but that path is full of thorns and nestles but it's a path we must cross every other nation we look up to crossed that path, the Americans, china Malaysia Singapore.

We can't keep living a lie of subsidy and market disparity.
So why is corruption and looting more prevalent now than when we had cheap petrol and cheap dollars with low unemployment and high productivity?

Why is Tinubu borrowing more than previous presidents despite billions of dollars savings from subsidy removal?

The Federal Government says it has no intention to borrow from any local or foreign organisation with its removal of subsidy on petrol and exchange rate harmonisation.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Chief Wale Edun, revealed this at the end of the inaugural Federal Executive Council meeting on Monday in Abuja.

He said that the benefit of the subsidy removal would be ploughed back into various sectors aimed at boosting government revenue and improving the business environment for local and foreign investment.

Edun said that with the increased revenue from subsidy removal, various palliatives have been made available to cushion its effect on a short, medium and long-term basis.

He reiterated the President Bola Tinubu-led administration’s desire to bring back the economy from the wood it has found itself over time.

Oga it's terribly unfair to suggest corruption and looting at the federal level is higher in 2023 than ever, what we have is higher level of public scrutiny and public engagement, prior to January 2012 occupy Nigeria protest 99.5% of Nigerians had never heard the words fuel subsidy, they weren't aware that billions was being stolen by NNPC, fuel importers and all sorts of individuals in the sector,

Prior to 2017/18 WAEC couldn't account for the fees paid by students to undertake examination, when Buhari adminstration attempted to audit the previous 10 years under PDP an administrator in the NC office claimed a "snake had swallowed the money"

Under Buhari and leading into this Tinubu adminstration the customs service now remits funds into the consolidated accounts, it was only in recent years that we have started implementing the TSA in a handful of government departments even though it came into law under GEJ, and it was only in the last year that this Tinubu adminstration had the balls to challenge the lack of audit of NNPC all through the PDP year and as far back as the military era CBN as not submitted an audited report as mandated by law to the senate oversight committee.

Shall I continue to list the number of incidents of blatant robberies Nigerians were subjected to that we are only just becoming sensitized to.

It now our collective duty to keep track of our common public purse, insist on accountability and apply appropriate but reasonable pressure.

Must I also denounce strongly this false narrative this administration has incurredore debt when the opposite is the reality, the Buhari adminstration , and CBN under Emefiele engaged in financial fraud writing off FG debt but failing to declare said debt, monies were borrowed and government bonds issued fraudulently without them being reflected, it was when Tinubu got into government that JP Morgan came clean to let us know that contrary to what Emefiele said about the country being in the green we had gone past red and on the brink of being insolvent add to this the currency devaluation is what has influenced the numbers you see.

But I'm glad because now we can say with confidence we know our situation and if honest and diligent can orchestrate how to dig ourselves out of this great big hole.

Why is Tinubu, Buhari and APC borrowing more than PDP presidents, even though the economy is sinking with high unemployment, hyperinflation, low productivity etc leading to more insecurity from idle people?

What other reason apart from worse corruption by the pretentious politicians of Oshiomole’s Assembly of Past Criminals, APC?

socialmediaman:
The 2018 Rating by Transparency International placed Nigeria at 148th position out of 180 countries. Nigeria was improving over the years under the previous government, until Buhari got elected as president, things became worse.

There is a difference between fact and fiction. We need to face facts, Buhari is worse than GEJ when it comes to fighting corruption, at least that’s what the facts prove.

Most of us believed there was corruption under Goodluck Jonathan’s Government. I agree with those who did, there was corruption, but not as bad as it is today under Mohammadu Buhari.

In 2012, Nigeria was placed at 139th position, In 2014, Nigeria gained 3 steps and was placed at 136th position. Under Buhari, Nigeria has lost many positions down to 148th.

There’s no further proof needed that corruption has worsened under Buhari’s government compared to previous years.

chisomkachy:
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has withdrawn the alleged money laundering suit it filed at the Federal High Court against Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa.

Naija News understands that the anti-graft did not give any particular reason for its application for withdrawal.

Following the application to withdraw, Justice Nicholas Oweibo discharged the ‘lien/Post No Debit’ placed on Obasa’s three accounts in Standard Chartered Bank.

The accounts are (US Dollars) 0001852063; (Current) 0001852056 and (Saving) 5002309624.

The judge also set aside the ex-parte orders he made on September 15, 2020, which led to the freezing of the accounts.

Recall that the court on September 15, 2020, granted an interim order freezing Obasa’s accounts following the EFCC’s application in a suit marked FHC/LCS/1064/2020.

The agency had said it was investigating the Speaker for the alleged offences of conspiracy, diversion of funds, abuse of office and money laundering.

But Justice Oweibo, on August 16, 2023, heard the application to unfreeze the accounts in his chamber.

During the hearing, the EFCC was represented by Mr. Sulaiman I. Sulaiman, while Obasa was represented by Mr. Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN).

The EFCC lawyer told the court that the application to unfreeze the accounts was pursuant to Section 44(2)(K) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Sections 26, 29 and 34 (1) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004, and under the court’s inherent jurisdiction.

Section 44 of the Constitution concerns constitutional rights to property.

Justice Oweibo held: “It is hereby ordered that an order is hereby granted to the respondent/applicant setting aside the ex-parte orders of this court made on the 15th day of September 2020 upon the ex-parte motion of the Applicant/ Respondent in relation the funds of the Respondent/Applicant domiciled in the accounts stated in the following schedule:

“ACCOUNT NAME, FINANCIAL ACCOUNT INSTITUTIONS, TYPE OF ACCOUNT, 1. Mudasiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered, (US Dollars) 0001852063 2. Mudasiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered (Current) 0001852056 3. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered (Saving) 5002309624.

“Issued at Lagos, under the seal of this Honourable Court and by the hands of the Presiding Judge this 16th day of August 2023.”

Yes if you say Nigeria is retrogressing, I will agree with you because we have neglected things that were working for us. In the year 1993 , I remember vividly that our neighbor then was a secondary school principal, he had 2 grown up boys that were in SS classes and other children. Farming in those days was a normal thing for every household. This man and his boys usually farm all their farm crops year in, year out. E.g all the cassava that will later be processed into Garri and cassava flower that the whole family of 6 will eat all through the year, same with ebery other grains that the family will consume all through the year and there will be excess that will later be taken to Market for some money. He was a secondary Principal who was also earning salary.. all they had to spend their money on was petty things like fish and sometimes meat because his trap usually catches animal. Now with Technology advancements, everyone wants to be the tech guru, oil and gas business mogul. People prefer white collar jobs by so doing abandoning our natural or normal way of life as Africans. Everyone wants to move to the city, with inception of yahoo, young folks are not willing to learn anything but they want to blow like Wizkid or hushpuppi.. our food production as growing Population country is another factor to talk about. Is our food production outputs sufficient enough for our population? You see we have lots of factors that are causing Nigeria’s current situations. One of it is Migration other occurrence like the banditry issues.. brotherman we can’t finish this debate about why this country is like this today. My advice. We should all work on ourselves as individuals because you see those that will be power in the nearest future are not going to be people that are not part of us.. there can never be a good leader if we don’t have good followers because the leaders will emerge from the followers. It’s Monday morning I rest my case here.
I think you are generalising. Many Nigerians will go back to farming if they have access to land. And everything rests on leadership. The most advanced countries in the world got to there because of the deliberate efforts of the leadership to drive change. People will rally round a leader that has the capacity. Go and read about how Lee Kuan Yew turned his country around. Read about how King Rama IX of Thailand turned his country around. Even people like David in the Bible turned Israel around. Everything rests on leadership.

Great post!! Very nostalgic.

Was wondering if you could tell me where to find the movie "Man proposes, God disposes" online. Been looking for that movie all over the place cos it holds a dear memory for me.

Our house was used in the movie and would like to see how it was before it was sold. As it was used months after it was finished for scenes in the movie

You have summarised our extreme poverty journey very well sir.

The saddest part of all this is how our leaders looters take the money abroad to make oyinbo countries even better than ours. Money that provides jobs in oyinbo countries to make pipe borne water available to all homes, among other basic government services and utilities.

How can we work our way out of this quagmire conundrum huh

Oga mi sir, Government won't adopt it if I tell you the way out. This multi party presidential system is ruining Nigeria and they know it. Those that manipulate the system prefers it because it gives them the edge and provides steady flow of money to exploit every political situation
What we need is simple and it cost little. The use of card reader or any electronic device that's subject to human influence is not even needed.Option A4 with two party system is the way out.It was done before and it worked.Realising it worked is why it was abandoned. If we truly want autonomy, local government elections should be conducted by respective Lg instead of state. Eligible candidates should have minimum of 12 years evidence of residence in the LG. Grassroot is the first point of contact with governance and remains the true voice of people yearnings. Provision should be made for independent candidate to contest in lg election
