It is not correct that Rishi Sunak resigned as British Prime minister.
Rishi Sunak was voted out or his party lost election to remain the party with majority seats in parliament.

Rishi Sunak of the conservative party was succeeded by Karmer of the Labour party.

When a prime minister, in a parliamentary system of government such as the UK, resigns, it doesn't mean he is completely out of government. He/she remains a member of parliament. A president in a presidential system, like the USA, is politically finished if he dares to resign. Know the difference.

Anyone well informed should enlighten us please.

They actually resign and hand over to a member of their party. The general public voted for the party not the individual. So if a particular prime minister is not doing well, his/her party members push for another person to try so they will not lose at the general elections. Resigned prime ministers remain members of parliament until the end of their tenure.

They are two different systems now. UK PM is not elected. The leader/chairman of the party with house majority automatically becomes the PM and once the party changes leadership, the PM becomes an ex leader and so has to leave office. That's how Boris Johnson, Theresa May, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak all became PM
