Lionel Messi 🐐 has written a new chapter of football history at 38 years and 363 days old. The Argentine star is now the all-time leading goalscorer at the FIFA men’s World Cup, breaking Miroslav Klose’s 12-year record by scoring his 17th goal on Monday (22 June). Messi’s 38th-minute strike against Austria is his fourth goal of the 2026 tournament and gives him the outright scoring record, as well as extending the record for most FIFA World Cup appearances in his 28th match.

It is a shame that this generation compares this guy to Ronaldo. No rational person can watch both of them play, see how they control games and score goals, and conclude that Ronaldo is even close to Messi, let alone better than him. To every rational football mind, Messi is the undisputed greatest player of all time. |

Messi playing and scoring before C. Ronaldo does might disorient C. Ronaldo when he plays his own match afterwards. Not Messi's fault. |

He did it with a goal that's not a penalty. I feel he wasn't serious about the penalty that would have fetched him that record few minutes earlier. He wanted it to be heroic and he did it. Football God 001, I hail thee. |

This guy is something else. This is the same Messi of 20 years ago that Nigerians were comparing with Mikel Obi and arguing arrogantly that Mikel is better than Messi and even went ahead accusing FIFA of being racist because Messi was given the FIFA under 20 best player. Not until about 5 years later that they started withdrawing their statement small small when they realized that this Messi is super human. When they saw how incredible and consistent he was every year they conclude he is a god before they now promoted him to a GOAT. |

| Re: Lionel Messi Becomes All-time Leading FIFA Men’s World Cup Scorer With 17th Goal by JoeEeL(m): 7:25pm On Jun 22 |
Very good. But with the expansion of FIFA matches to about 48 teams now, it would be easier to break. Never mind that Mbappe is just a few goals behind and he still probably has 2 world cups in him after this edition. So nice record to have but not one that will last like that of his 91-goal calendar year record. |
