Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command's Anti-Kidnapping Unit have rescued an abducted victim, neutralised two suspected kidnappers and recovered N2.2m believed to be proceeds of criminal activities during a follow-up operation against a kidnapping syndicate in the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, noting that the operation underscored the command's determination to rid Ogun State of kidnapping and other violent crimes.

According to the statement, the victim was abducted on June 11, 2026, at Ogbe Village in Ogun State, prompting the immediate deployment of intelligence and tactical assets by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit to secure the victim's release and track down the perpetrators.

Babaseyi said sustained intelligence gathering, strategic surveillance and operational pressure mounted on the gang led to the victim's safe release on June 18, 2026, without injury.

Following the victim's rescue, the police intensified efforts to apprehend members of the gang and subsequently traced them to a hideout within the state based on credible intelligence.

The PPRO explained that the suspects opened fire on sighting the operatives in an attempt to evade arrest, resulting in a gun duel during which two of the suspected kidnappers were killed, while others escaped with gunshot wounds.

Items recovered from the operation included a single-barrel gun, one expended cartridge, a mobile phone and N2.2m cash suspected to be linked to the gang's criminal activities.

Babaseyi added that efforts were ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects, while investigations had been expanded to uncover other members and collaborators of the criminal network.

Commending the Anti-Kidnapping Unit for its professionalism and bravery, the Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, reaffirmed the command's commitment to pursuing kidnappers and other violent criminals across the state. He assured residents that Ogun would remain hostile to criminal elements and urged members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to support ongoing security operations.

This gang of kidnappers are likely local boys who have no access to the military equipment sported by Fulani slave-raiding marauder gangs. Partaking of gunplay against the police while equipped with cumbersome locally-fabricated single-shot 12-gauge shotguns that require several seconds to reload manually, the gang members who gave up the ghost never stood a ghost of a chance against police officers wielding Kalashnikovs fed with piggy-backed ammunition clips.

All the same, congratulations to the brave and patriotic police officers who went into harm's way, not knowing at the onset whether the kidnappers they sought to subdue where small time hoodlums fighting with antique weapons, or infantry-trained Islamist terror militiamen.

Several local hunters armed with artisanal-fabricated single-shot muzzle-loading blunderbusses that take a marathon 3 minutes to reload after each shot, could capitalize on the element of surprise by successfully ambushing a squad of men toting automatic military rifles and grenade launchers.

Does that matter in this case? victim rescued unharmed, terrorist neutralized. In fact I am an advocate that any money recovered from the neutralized terrorists should be shared among the officers that carried out the operation
