Drug Cartels Turning Southwest Into Meth Hub? Marwa Raises Fresh Alarm

Nigeria's anti-narcotics agency has raised serious concerns over the growing activities of drug syndicates allegedly transforming parts of Southwest Nigeria into a hub for methamphetamine production.

Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), disclosed that criminal networks are increasingly setting up clandestine meth laboratories in remote locations across the region. According to him, the trend poses a major threat to public safety, national security, and the wellbeing of young Nigerians.

Marwa warned that methamphetamine is one of the most dangerous illicit drugs because of its highly addictive nature and devastating effects on users. He noted that drug cartels are exploiting forests and isolated communities to conceal their operations and evade detection by security agencies.

The NDLEA boss reaffirmed the agency's commitment to dismantling these criminal networks through intelligence-driven operations, surveillance, and collaboration with local communities and international partners.

Security experts have expressed concern that the proliferation of meth laboratories could fuel violent crimes, increase substance abuse among youths, and further empower organized criminal groups.

Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities within their communities as efforts intensify to curb the spread of illicit drug production in the Southwest.
