Peter Obi Supports State Police, Wants Implementation Delayed Until After 2027 by Akinpedia(op): 8:59am On Jun 27
Peter Obi has called on President Bola Tinubu to postpone the implementation of the proposed State Police system until after the 2027 general elections.

It is important to note that Obi did not ask the National Assembly to reject or refuse to pass the State Police Bill. Rather, he acknowledged that establishing state police is a significant reform that could help address Nigeria's growing security challenges if implemented with the right safeguards.

According to Obi, his concern is not the concept of state police itself but the timing of its implementation. He argued that introducing state-controlled policing too close to a general election could create opportunities for political interference or abuse by state governments.

He therefore recommended that the Federal Government delay the rollout until after the 2027 elections. Obi also emphasized the need for strong legal and institutional safeguards, including independent oversight mechanisms and State Police Service Commissions that are insulated from political influence, to ensure the new policing system remains professional, accountable, and focused on protecting citizens rather than serving political interests.

The debate over state police has continued for years in Nigeria. Supporters believe it would improve local intelligence gathering, enable faster responses to security threats, and reduce the burden on the Nigeria Police Force. Critics, however, have raised concerns that some state governors could misuse state police for political purposes if adequate checks and balances are not established.

Obi's position adds another perspective to the ongoing national conversation. Rather than opposing state police, he is advocating for a cautious implementation process that prioritizes transparency, accountability, and public confidence.

What do you think?

* Should the implementation of state police begin immediately?
* Should it be postponed until after the 2027 general elections?
* What safeguards do you think are necessary to prevent political misuse of state police?

Let's have a constructive discussion.

This man is just not it.
He is not to be trusted.
With the insecurity at hand, whichbhe ia using to blackmail and calling the president to resign, now he says this.

Obi does not Nigeria and Nigerians.
He rejoices when bad news come out of Nigeria.
He should never be president, talks like a dictator without direction and solution.
Anyway he got no party at the moment

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. However, this thread is about Peter Obi's position on state police.

From his statement, he did not oppose the creation of state police. Rather, he said he supports the reform but believes its implementation should be delayed until after the 2027 elections because of concerns about possible political misuse.

Whether people agree or disagree with that reasoning is a valid subject for debate, but let's discuss his actual position rather than attributing views he did not express.

Obi is just jealous that Tinubu is the one bringing it to fruition. Why not go and sort out the disaster that has befallen NDC before thinking of 2027 election that he may not even participate in?

Won't their be elections after 2027? We should suspend State Police over concerns about those upcoming elections also? Maybe for the next 30 years ba?

Should such power be given to the governors who are seeking reelection or going to Senate when the election is some months away

Whether Peter Obi is right or wrong is open to debate, but saying he is "jealous" is speculation.

His publicly stated position was that he supports state police but believes its implementation should be delayed until after the 2027 elections because of concerns about possible political misuse.

People can disagree with that reasoning, but it's more productive to debate the merits of his argument than to assume his motives.

That's one of the biggest questions surrounding state police.

Funding will largely depend on the final law. Some proposals suggest that each state government would finance its own police force, just as states currently fund other state institutions. Others have suggested a combination of state funding and federal support.

The concern is valid because while some states may have the financial capacity to sustain a state police force, others may struggle. That's one of the issues lawmakers and stakeholders will need to address if state police is eventually implemented.

What funding model do you think would work best?

That's a valid question.

Those who support immediate implementation argue that if state police is a good idea, it shouldn't be delayed simply because elections are approaching.

On the other hand, those who support postponement—including Peter Obi—argue that introducing a major security reform shortly before a highly competitive general election could increase the risk of political misuse. Their view is that implementing it after the election would allow time to establish safeguards and test the system in a less politically charged environment.

Ultimately, Nigerians will have different opinions on whether the benefits of implementing it now outweigh the potential risks. That's the central issue being debated.

A genuine question: Should such powers be given to governors who are seeking re-election or other elective offices when a general election is only months away?

Life is sacrosanct. Nigerians are dying like Rats. Let Governors abuse it politically if it will improve the security of Nigerian lives and property.

To me, that is a good trade off because a preventable death of an innocent Nigerian is no way comparable to a Governor rigging himself into office.

That is a political issue we can work on. Loss of life cannot be reversed and I am always amused by how Nigerians are so focused on politics. In most nations of the world, primary focus is on what is best for citizens.

As we fine-tune and improve State policing, things will get better. Inaction is not an option. Nigeria must have policing that puts patriotic indigenes in charge of the security of live and property of the people in a State. It is the only way forward.

Majority of Obidients are only about Igbo Presidency. Not progress for Nigeria.

Can anyone show me when the SE has ever been the good Governance barometer of Nigeria as the SW has uncompromisingly and consistently being since independence?

Giringori thinks that when the Senate passes the amendment to the Police Act automatically, the Senate has created state police for every state.

Is he not aware that the bill only seeks to give States the power and authority to create and operate state police?

Is he not aware that the bill specifically says that only respective state assemblies are vested with powers to draw up the legal and operational framework in establishing state police force?

Is he not aware that before any state police can even begin to function it must meet certain criteria such as staffing of vetted would be officers who must have gotten adequate training ?

Is he not aware that no state govt has budgeted for a state police force in their current 2026 budget and if any state police force must come to being there must be both adequate budgeting approved by the state assembly and also that the FG will provide counterpart funding when other criteria are met?

Is Giringori not also aware that arming state police must pass through the NSA who will only do so when other specified criteria are met.

Does Giringori think any state no matter how enthusiastic they are willing to set up their own police force can not in a reasonable time frame setup a state police outfit before the 2027 elections slated for January next year?

Giringori is the biggest full in Nigeria.
