The lawmaker representing Borno South Senatorial District, Ali Ndume, has called on the Nigerian government to make the Senate a part time work, where lawmakers only get paid when they have a sitting at the plenary or committee level.

Ndume made this call on Friday while responding to questions in an interview on Trust TV.

According to him, the Senate and the entire legislators do not go to office on a daily basis, but only during plenary sessions and at the various committee levels.

He said, “To me, I said it, what are we doing? We have been on recess for several times. Let us be paid by sitting. If you sit, you get paid. If you are not sitting, you are not paid.

“And to me, we can even make the National Assembly to work part time. On Wednesday, we all assembled for an emergency meeting for this year; important national issues, that is the state policing even though I have reservations as to the speed and the way they are doing it.

“Senate is a committee of elders. You just don’t come one day, sit down because the President wants state police, you just pass it overnight.

“You are supposed to sit down, deliberate on it and get the input. We have passed the bill. Has the state police taken off today?

Since Ndume knew this, why didn’t he sponsor the bill making the senate a part time one?
He is capable of sponsoring the bill and expected to do so if he is indeed sincere

Senate is already part-time.

How often do they attend plenary? Some of them come late and do not even read bills before passing. Some of them spend time chasing contracts and businesses.

I think the senate should be scrapped and we should have regional senates where they can make laws for their regions. We should also scrap the house of representatives and have 36 state representatives who can make national laws and debate bills.

Right now, politics is a job and many politicians have no substance.

With the availability of starlink internet and the likes, Every senator should live in their constituency and meetings should be done remotely.

Everybody logs in at 11pm. Meetings are done electronically and votes are carried out digitally. It will reduce the insecurity in a lot of areas, when the reps and the senators live in the midst of their people.

Absolutely, I could remember Studemt parliament in the University, you only get paid a token per day for the number of days you attended sittings, and not monthly salary.

Senator Loud mouth, you have been long enough to know that it is left for the legislature to do and come up with the law. Talking about " government" is only just shying away from taking responsibility for your inaction, ineptitude and ignorance.

Did you read what he said at all. Making something part time is like not making it lucrative. Thats why he said they should be paid as they sat for meetings, and that shouldn't be much.
