ABUTH Makes History As Nigeria Launches Groundbreaking Ovarian Cancer Drug Trial For Black Women

Nigeria has recorded another major milestone in cancer research as the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Zaria, officially launched a groundbreaking clinical trial evaluating Niraparib maintenance therapy for women living with advanced ovarian cancer.

The study, which is being conducted in collaboration with the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami, USA, will enroll 20 women diagnosed with specific types of advanced ovarian cancer.

Speaking at the launch, ABUTH Chief Medical Director and Principal Investigator, Prof. Ahmed Hamidu Umdagas, described ovarian cancer as a "silent killer," noting that Black women are often diagnosed late, develop more aggressive disease, and experience poorer survival outcomes despite being underrepresented in global medical research.

According to him, the trial is expected to help close this gap by generating scientific evidence that reflects African and Black populations, while ensuring the highest standards of ethics, patient safety, and clinical care.

Prof. Umdagas added that the research demonstrates that Africa can contribute world class solutions instead of waiting for answers from elsewhere.

Experts from the University of Miami and other collaborating institutions also pledged transparency and full support for the study, expressing optimism that the research could improve treatment outcomes and reduce ovarian cancer deaths among Black women.

The event attracted senior officials from Ahmadu Bello University, the Federal University of Health Sciences Azare, the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), researchers, clinicians, and other stakeholders in Nigeria's health sector.

If successful, the trial could strengthen Nigeria's position in global cancer research while offering new hope to thousands of African women battling one of the world's deadliest gynecological cancers.

Chemical drug is not the perfect solution;the perfect solution is the right diet.Natural diet or food is the best medicine.

Pharmaceutical drugs have caused more damage than solution to modern medicine.

As long as USA is involved, it will be just maintenance drugs NOT CURATIVE. They will never allow CURATIVE drugs. Cos that will end their business. It's time Africa stands Alone to make drugs by African for African.

Natrual diet reduces the risk of getting cancer , and the risk of cancer reoccuring. It does not cure cancer. Even Ben Carson that used natural diet to reduce his prostate cancer, eventually had an operation to remove the prostate.

Also, a lot of drugs for cancer work. Very very well. Take Hodgkin's lymphoma. Before 1970, death sentence, after 1970's ...you get to live.

Ovarian cancer can be prevented...via genetics. And it can be cured...by operation, once caught on time.

FInally, immunotherapy is coming up with new cures by the day

(Yes, chemucal drugs cause side effects, but consider the alternative. Death in pain)

1. It's a very early stage of research. Note that they are using twenty patients...if the drug works at this stage, they go to phase 2, where they use slightly more patients, and if it works, they go to phase 3 testing...an RCT.

2. America has produced a lot of curative drugs. Many of those antibiotics you people dey use...were developed in America.

3. Many cancer patients get cured by surgery and medication. The trick is to catch the cancer at an early state. ALso radiotheraphy works.

4. The ones undergoing maintenance treatment, are those who have had the cancer spread all over their body, meaning nothing can be done...so at the end. But immunotheraphy...also being developed in America...is proving to be working well.

The devil is in the details, truly.

The headline made me think the treatment was researched and developed by the Ahmadu Bello university.

Seriously I was disappointed in the headline, after reading the details.

How will this ever happen when we allow the worst rogues to be our leaders looters huh

Are we not having the highest number of children out of school?

Are the ones who are lucky to be in school not mostly in private establishments that are hardly monitored, because governors and LGA chairmen steal money that should employ enough well paid teachers and other professionals for the education system? This is despite Obasanjo/Atiku administration’s UBEC matching federal funds to help states achieve nine years of free and compulsory education for all children.

So how can we do any meaningful research in Nigeria and Africa?

If it was solely developed by them, you may have also doubted if anything good could come out of there.

Every solution is a product of collaboration!
Know this and know peace.

For your own benefits, please stay away from drugs. Go back home and seek good herbal medicine. Most vaccine, HIV and cancer drugs are trap to kill and reduce population.

If they came up with the idea and developed the drug with funding from US, I believe they will likely have a percentage ownership of 40-50%.

I am shocked that noone can see that celebrating this trial in this manner violates a bunch of ethical codes.

The study is still ongoing and already they are celebrating the drug's success. Aren't they concerned that it will introduce bias etc

Absolutely! A fantastic, undeniably positive headline. It’s brimming with enthusiasm and a healthy dose of confidence in the future of the treatment. Perfect for boosting morale!?

What you don't know is greater than what you know

Natural diet in its purest form cures all diseases. You can't be eating natural food and packaged(ultra processed) food and expect to get healed by natural food.

Canned drinks, canned milk, processed sugary chocolate beverages, bread, biscuits, noodles, etc are not natural food.

The right human nutrition is the perfect cure to all diseases.
