There is no comparison…..we installed our solar inverter with 6 panels and two solar batteries and February this year makes it one year and it still serves our 3 bed apartment carrying fridge Tv and low powered fans and lighting and only use gen to pump water and I can confidently say it a good investment….any one who as the resource should invest in renewable energy and save cost of buying fuel.
your solar should pump water for you, except your batery is weak.

Is this a question?

Like a serious question?

Is 240 volts passing through my phone and laptop? huh...both have chargers which cut down the AC current entering to 5 volts for the phone and 12 or 19 volts most likely for the laptop

More current means more heat, which will imply more heating up of the appliance's components

I will rather invest in a Mikano Gen than its Solar equivalent in power output...Kapish

It the same system, same working principle with different circuit

Connect your Solar set-up directly to your phone or laptop without using of their chargers grin

They are the same right? grin

Choose between Generator noise, and a possibility of the solar set-up burning your house down while you are work grin

As for me, I am very comfortable with generators, especially the very recent ones which run very quiet for their power output
Oga I will go for generator than solar. Solar is not reliable especially in raining season and has its limitations. Can you use solar to power factories?
Solar is for light and little gadgets.

Even banks still use diesel generators.

Depending on d load solar want carry, nahim go determine durability
Heavy load avoid solar
Battery duration no last like generator duration
My generator servicing
Just change engine oil
Dat is all
But solar maintenance cost of....
After one year
It will start developing fault
After two years
Start to dey prepare to buy new battery 🔋
My generator clock 7yrs this yr
Still working go

Solar is cheaper to run than generator but it is weather dependant. Like this season that we are in now, when there low sunlight, the charging rate of the battery is slow.
We had issues with our transformer recently and I support my solar system with generator, I spent about 65K weekly on fuel alone whereas when I support my solar system with public power supply I spend arround 50K monthly on prepaid credit.

Since this is a Nigerian forum, I will tailor my response to the Nigerian reality where there is little or no standard and quality enforcement for anything, including Solar set-ups

In the first world countries, Solar is far better than generators ceteris paribus, but in Nigeria, Solar set-ups are a quality gamble and unreasonably expensive

So as far as Nigeria is concerned, Generators are far more cost efficient and more reliable...

In Nigeria, the cost of a good generator is far cheaper than the cost of a solar set up that can supply power equal to such generator ...and there are very quiet and fuel efficient generators these days...

On will think Solar is cheaper until it is time to replace batteries, solar panels, or the inverter spoils...or worst case, the solar set-up puts gbese on the owner by catching fire and burning the house down grin

Last but not the least, Solar people (especially those who are off-grid) will still on Gen this period because of the frequent rain grin..No sun, very little or no power for them
So much off-points in a single post... Na wa o

Using solar to pump water doesn’t spoil the battery?
When you use it only when the sun 🌞 is high & at peak.

Solar is the best! I have a 6kva inverter and 16kwh battery with 10pieces of 595watt JA solar panels on the roof. I use 1.5hp and 1hp Air condition during the day and at night I use 1hp all night till morning including every other appliances in the house. In the morning I wake up to about 65% battery left. It charges back up and the cycle never ends.

I have been running Solar for 4 months, I have saved #270,000 I have light 24/7, with that N270k would have just daily rub my gen for 5hrs, I run my solar 24/7 which can't happen with gen plus the noise and the panic to always off it, plus my solar can rate my deep freezer. I installed everything for N475k
ITEL 1000W battery, 500W inverter.

I bought it for N330k and panel for N65k transport, accessories and labour everything totalled N475k

To compare the hours used to if I was to be running Gen, would have spent over N1M+ on Fuel.
You mean you spent just #475k to install solar that run your appliances 24/7?

Abeg, which appliances are you running?

Looks really cheap, so I'll love to learn

N475k not N475 Okay?

43 inches LG flat screen (68W)

3 ceiling fans (68W each) only on when there is sun

130W haire Thermercool deep freezer (only on during the day)

45W rechargeable fan (used more often
30W rechargeable fan for my wife.

All energy saving bulks

1 Home theatre maybe 40-50W
1 GOVT
phones and laptop.

2 bed room flat.

Sometimes they bring light for 4hrs and it gets full again, at night, I reduce my appliances.
Re: Generator Vs Solar: Which Saves More Money? by Skillsnigeria: 7:49pm On Jun 27
grin some people are even saying solar will burn down house because of some locally build lithium battery that malfunction.

Have been off-grid since 2015 with no wahala. Nothing will make me to go back to Generator again. Those that has never use solar before can keep decieving themselves. grin

Long story short, you still need a Generator grin

Your Solar for pump the water for you na grin
grin the usage of solar is not for all appliances if you want it to last you for a long duration that was why we didn’t connect it to solar and beside we don’t pump water everytime and nepa light is still available when we need to pump water and if there is no nepa light we use gen…..there are people that use solar to pump water and there are also solar powered pumping machines.

Re: Generator Vs Solar: Which Saves More Money? by Reference(m): 7:55pm On Jun 27
Having used solar energy for many years now I can sort of conclude that they both have advantages and disadvantages, inadequacies and strong points.

Despite the rapidly advancing technologies on panel capacity the big disadvantage of solar is energy density. It takes so much space to match the output of an average gasoline engine generator thoughtless of a diesel equivalent.

In a high density, urban area, this is a big problem. At the moment folks who live in block of flats particularly where the roof structure is not panel friendly (high pitched roofs in the tropics) are not having it easy to share limited spaces available.

But all these are insignificant compared to the problems of ICE generators namely noise, emissions and the all too familiar problems of unstable fuel prices.

So what I recommend is to invest in solar as a main energy source and have an ICE generator to keep the batteries fresh from time to time and when the climate becomes erratic.

we decided not to connect it to the pump machine to save the battery life and it as nothing to do with the battery……solar durability is dependent on how you are able to make use it. Eg use DC and not Ac powered appliances which use more energy and that’s why some people complain that there solar don’t last long because of the heavy powered appliances they use with their solar system.

Thanks

Currently wondering how I'm getting quotations of over 1m for two AC/DC ceiling fans, energy saving bulbs, one home theatre, a smart tv, phones, laptop and a midea inverter freezer 150w)

Sorry for too much questions, but can you list what you got with price, if you don't mind

That is a storage/management problem, not a solar problem. Decent quality solar panels are totally maintenance free and give no problems whatsoever for a very long time when installed properly.

your battery then is lead acid. LiFePo4 don't have this issues. They last as much as it can go, and you monitor your daily usage.

The two can be used as complementing each other to enjoy continuous supply of electricity.

You can use solar for lights, fan, television while generators can be used for pumping machines, ironing and washing machines.

it degrades over time and could take more than a year to get damaged so one would need battery replacement.
