I use a Honda 2.5kva generator purchased brand new in 2016 and I have been using it till this day. It's over ten years now and within this period I may only have called a technician not more than 10 times to only do what I can't typically do myself as I service it myself, which is just oil scheduled changes, or plug change after a very long time of rigorous usage. My Honda is quiet and very fuel efficient. It gives me about 1.3-1.4hr per Litre efficiency and it carries my deep freezer, 2Nos OX 130w industrial fans, 7Kg (350w) washing machine, etc. I will not switch to an inverter system as it's pointless having 3 sources of power in my home plus the huge cost of acquiring a comparatively equivalent quality inverter to my Honda generator. As i do not ever call technicians since the gen doesnt give me issues since 2016 and I've gotten good value for money, hitch free. Once there's no electricity (i'm on band A by the way), I switch on my 2.5kVa generator and it carries everything in my house and i'm fine. As for cost, its just fuel. I use about 15k max in a week which is about 60k in a month, i.e in a worst case scenario. To purchase the same Honda 2.5kva gen today will cost about 800k, i got mine in 2016 for 160k. If I am to get a good quality inverter system that would carry everything in my house, it'll cost me about 2.5m to 3m. If I have 3m and subtract 800k from it to get another Honda 2.5kVa generator,i.e assuming I do not have a generator presently, I can invest the balance 2.2m in a reliable money market that can give me good interest in 90days that I can use to offset the fueling cost for my gen while retaining the principal. Simple!!

The best decision i made was to invest in solar for home and office 3+ years ago. I have lived the last 2 years without owning a generator. I have akways hated them, starting with the sound.

Of course your solar should be able to power fridge and freezer steady, and some key ACs, preferably inverter ACs as well, for it to make sense. Mine can also pump water.

IF i ever need a generator , which is rare, we just rent it for the period. Its still way cheaper for me.

Not to talk of all the time, stress , transport and tools required to run and maintain your gen, fuelling, servicing, engine oil, and repairs, pouring fuel, smelling of fuel, settling the person that helped you buy fuel... it never stops.

Solar eliminates all that. Sometimes i dont know when i have run out Electricity till much later.

Solar is far far better.

I think solar is better than generator.
But it's an investment that one have to prepare for in tens of millions in order to really enjoy it.
You can start gradually, even from 600k.

Using solar to pump water doesn’t spoil the battery?
Most pumps are not rated that high and the real issue is starting current. As it is most petrol stations run on solar which means multiple pumps with no issue

Since my landlord installed his solar system, they ve not switch it off for the past 3 months and they ve abandon their generator.
They used the solar for everything.

Since this is a Nigerian forum, I will tailor my response to the Nigerian reality where there is little or no standard and quality enforcement for anything, including Solar set-ups

In the first world countries, Solar is far better than generators ceteris paribus, but in Nigeria, Solar set-ups are a quality gamble and unreasonably expensive

So as far as Nigeria is concerned, Generators are far more cost efficient and more reliable...

In Nigeria, the cost of a good generator is far cheaper than the cost of a solar set up that can supply power equal to such generator ...and there are very quiet and fuel efficient generators these days...

On will think Solar is cheaper until it is time to replace batteries, solar panels, or the inverter spoils...or worst case, the solar set-up puts gbese on the owner by catching fire and burning the house down grin

Last but not the least, Solar people (especially those who are off-grid) will still on Gen this period because of the frequent rain grin..No sun, very little or no power for them
Words from a poor man! 😂

Let me tell you, even with the heavy rainfall here, I still use and on my solar. Just because rain falls that doesn't mean that the panels won't charge, Atleast after the heavy rainfall, sun will still shine.

Also panels doesn't spoil that easily, it won't. even the inverter won't spoil unless you misuse it, that's why it's always good to ask the people that are expert in the field.

Choose between Generator noise, and a possibility of the solar set-up burning your house down while you are work grin

As for me, I am very comfortable with generators, especially the very recent ones which run very quiet for their power output
Just say you can't afford Solar, there's no need saying all these rubbish.

As someone who has used solar for ten 🔟years, the answer is a resounding solar. The huge cost of solar setup I did last for 247 light was recovered in just 9 months. I have used it for over one and a half years. If I need to change anything in years to come, it's only the battery.
Do you recharge the solar like nepa bill every month ?
Does it run on meter?

Or you just install and use.

Thanks

Currently wondering how I'm getting quotations of over 1m for two AC/DC ceiling fans, energy saving bulbs, one home theatre, a smart tv, phones, laptop and a midea inverter freezer 150w)

Sorry for too much questions, but can you list what you got with price, if you don't mind
Go and buy them yourself and call an installer. They wanted to sell Colar solar for me for 380k when I went to the market it was just 250k, they wanted to give me.2 panels for 120k but it was just 60k for both. Solar engineers most are thieves, they see it as a quick opportunity to eat you quick, very wicked Nigerians, they think you pluck money from heaven.

1 ITEL Power tank 1000W battery 500W inverter N330,000, heard it's N308k at their office.

320W Solar panel (1, you can go for 420W) N65k

8yards of cable wire N22,000 if I can remember. I ended up using just 5yards from it.

Circuit breaker N7500 or so
Change of over N4500

Socket N1500

Workman 27,000

If anything again, Maybe 5,000 or 8000 will take care if it, I transported it with my car.

You should go for 2,000W which is sold for about 500,000-600,000

Accessories shouldn't be more than 250k

Oga I will go for generator than solar. Solar is not reliable especially in raining season and has its limitations. Can you use solar to power factories?
Solar is for light and little gadgets.

Even banks still use diesel generators.
You're saying nonsense. Despite today's rain I was able to generate 14kw from my solar panels. I use Air-conditioning inverter 1.5hp and 1hp everyday even during rainy season including fridge, freezer, lightning points, television, home theater, just name it. During worst weather my panels generate electricity for me but I might just reduce my loads to 1hp Air conditioning but the rest of the load still remain. Look at my app generation for today below. I wake up to solar generatiom every blessed day regardless of the weather. I am waiting for The dry season when we will have enough sun. It's gonna be massive.

Have been off-grid since 2015 with no wahala. Nothing will make me to go back to Generator again. Those that has never use solar before can keep decieving themselves. grin
That buygala guy is so ignorant and he's passing a lot of misinformation here.

Solar is the best! I have a 6kva inverter and 16kwh battery with 10pieces of 595watt JA solar panels on the roof. I use 1.5hp and 1hp Air condition during the day and at night I use 1hp all night till morning including every other appliances in the house. In the morning I wake up to about 65% battery left. It charges back up and the cycle never ends.
How much is the total setup including workmanship?

Banks
MTN
Glo
Airtel
Factories
Even confectionaries and supermakets still use diesel. Filling stations still use generators or diesel.

Solar is not reliable because is link with battery.

Charge your phone with solar and next day charge the same phone with nepa light or generator, you will see the difference.

Until offices start using it, I won't take you seriously.

I will rather stick to my generator than install solar.
