Look At Me Today, My Mother Sold Akara, I Carried Bananas On My Head To Markets In Plateau- Dare A video that was posted on the official X account of Mic on The Podcast on Saturday, June 27, 2026 has captured the moment Sunday Dare, the Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Public Communication was saying he has sold Akara before. This came after the First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu listed some businesses that Nigerians can begin with small capital. In the video that surfaced online, Sunday Dare stated that there is nothing bad in selling Akara or roasting corn. He said he hawked bananas to several markets in Jos. My mother sold akara and bananas. I carried bananas on my head to the market in Jos. My mother sold oranges, and through this, they were able to train me. If it was right 60 years ago, why not today? What is wrong with that? People are missing the First lady's point, her point was that whatever you are doing have some entrepreneurial skill.Sunday Dare President Tinubu's Special Adviser on Media & Communications

If there is anything I like about Igbo people is their entrepreneur spirit. I've seen many Igbo youth who came to Lagos with nothing manouvre there way to financial prosperity. I've seen many engage in petty trading, hawking by the roadside with no shame. These are trades that an average Yoruba man would not want to do. There's a particular canteen back then we used to eat when we are broke in school, 2 young Igbo guys own it, they sell concortion rice, pap and bean and other stuff, am sure their initial setup would be less than 20k. Some year later when I visited the area to greet my Landlord, those young guys has transformed into a modern restaurant with staff and touch of excellence. I learn a great deal from that experience. An entrepreneur who doesn't know how utilize small amount will waste big money when it sees one. It's surprising to see Igbo with goal getter spirit coming down to disparage Remi Tinubu on 50k empowerment when the money their parents used to start a thriving business today is less than 10k. See how politics is causing some region their identity |

What kind of twisted logic is this. There are many doctors, lawyers, traders and other professionals whose kids did not inherit their profession. No wonder someone once called you guys lazy yoots. Always prefering handouts to hardwork. Memphis357: |

It mostly likely would have been just one of those news. You guys atttribute too much importance to your guy. For example, I saw one headline that he gave one school some money, I did not even open the thread. His money, his choice. Memphis357: |

Why didn't you continue with that? 😏... Saying look at me today as if he is an important personality not knowing he is worse than when he was helping his mama with Akara. |

If your mother truly sold akara, you will be more sensitive. All of them just using their nairaland account to spill one lambda in support of Remi Tinubu and their actual voices to drop another lamdba, still in support of insult to the masses. |

Ofunaofu:Mr. Sunday Dare, with respect, your argument is built on a false comparison. The fact that you hawked bananas decades ago because your mother had limited means is a story of resilience—not a blueprint for national economic policy. The question Nigerians are asking is simple After over 60 years of independence, should Africa's largest economy still be measuring hope by how many people can sell akara and roasted corn? If your mother sold akara because opportunities were scarce, shouldn't successive governments strive to ensure today's children have better options rather than celebrating the same hardship as progress? You eventually became a journalist, minister, and presidential adviser. Is that because government encouraged you to remain a banana hawker, or because you had opportunities to move beyond it? Kindly answer this for me. Thank you. |

These are the things majority of sane Nigerians keep on complaining about. Most of these so called leaders are not in touch with the present realities on ground. Due to the high inflation rates in the country which is in double digits, such petty businesses are also next to nothing or useless. The cost of beans, oil, gas or firewood, pot, nylon and every other thing needed in running the akara business is now on the high side leaving the akara fryer with little or no gain. Now how many akara fryers can comfortable send their children to public higher institutions with that business in today's Nigeria? The answer is non. Sunday Dare went to the higher institution when university students were been feed free meals, free accommodations and free tuition fee. I don't really blame him. Politics have altered his since of reasoning. |

Tinubu has turned everyone to praise singers to feed. Not everyone eats from his tainted table. Weaponising poverty for support is their goal. He does not have the moral or logical stance to tell Nigerians to sell akara to survive after destroying the economy. |

Ttalk:You said you are sure their initial setup cost about 20k which is just an assumption, but let us even assume for a second that you are correct, if the timeline was under GEJ, that 20k is worth more than the 50k Remi Tinubu is sharing. 20k will buy you about 3 bags of rice with change then, while the 50k Remi Tinubu is sharing won't even get you one... |

My question to anyone supporting remi tinubu, if everybody start selling akara, corn 🌽 and kuli kuli . Who will patronize them? The reason why some people are getting small small thing from the business is because so many people are not doing the business . |

You want mothers to continue to fry acara because your mother fried acara ?. Your daughters will certainly end up doing what you are wishing others. Very soon you return to selling bread on the streets |

Video of real people in the real world that appreciates 50k because it increases their capital in their line of petty trading. That people are denying the fact that they exist and will value that support is a surprise to me. /video/1?s=46

Thats why tribal politics is terrible. Supporting someone shamelessly because he or she is from your region. Easterners are not perfect, but I just saw a video of a church synod where the SSG of the state in Enugu mentioned about water availability, the people in the church openly responded negatively that there is not such.Growing up in 042,I wasnt surprised..no ass licking. If it were in the other region..hmmmm.. All of them will be clapping shamelessly. ... |
