I have no problem with tipping. I can understand at restaurants where servers were legally paid below minimum wage and expected to make up with tips. The tips they get depended on the service they provide. bad service .. got attitude .. no tip. Then it became mandatory .. up to around 20% added to your bill like tax. no option. That I disagree with. I tip who I want to tip. And it's true.... it's all ridiculous now .. tip cup at the coffee cart.... tip cup everywhere.. A tipping experience. Used to buy lunch at times at this small restaurant .. pretty much a mama put... owner was the cook... allost always at the back cooking .. the best fried chicken. Girl in front .. place order.. she goes to the back.. collects and also serves as cashier. One day . new babe in front.. nothing new.. but this one was a hottie.. we already know what's up. Tip jar next to the cash register. normal stuff. The mini meal was $6. .. handed her a $10 bill. This hottie put the $10 bill in the tip jar and handed me $4 change from the register. I didn't had to ask why the restaurant didn't remain in business. |

Kobojunkie:Why has the restaurant business been able to get away from not paying minimum wage to their waiting staff? The only other sector you see this arrangement is in strip clubs . And no job is mandated on anybody. People work because they need to earn a living. I am sure 99.9% of waiting staff will not hesitate to quit their jobs if they could get a better job that has a guaranteed income by the end of the day. Most waiters/waitresses who remain waiting tables because for some they like interacting with people . Others prefer the job because they hardly pay any taxes and they also get to draw welfare benefits. So stop spewing your ignorant trash here. |

In Nigeria, we call it corporate begging while it’s called tipping in the US. We call it bribery which is illegal, but they call it lobbying, which is not illegal. |

Omoawoke:Americans have been brainwashed into blaming and demonizing each other for what the 1% (mega rich) should be doing. So, they don't vote to establish fair wages under the law. They don't create/join unions to create a fair/safe work environment with appropriate wages and benefits. They don't vote for controlled immigration. They don't vote for controls on the cost of living and a stronger safety net. And they're pathologically racist and vote against anything they believe benefits black people. Instead they get angry at people for being "cheap" or "broke" or even hating poor people when they don't tip. And they blame them for why they can't pay their bills. There used to be a time in America when a waitress could afford an apartment just from being a waitress, not a nice apartment, but still decent housing. The 1% destroyed that. They claim that unions are full of lazy people. They ignore how the 1% carefully crushed unions. They claim rampant illegal immigration doesn't displace millions of Americans from decent paying jobs. They claim people are imagining it or making it up. Yet whenever those places get raided, magically Americans are working there. And Indians have all but invaded America in the last 15 years to fill fabricated shortages. Engineers have struggled with getting jobs for decades. Americans were told to get IT education, they did and now they can't get jobs and are getting laid off by the thousands. They vote against more and denser housing, which makes affordable, decent housing available to everyone, and close to jobs and essential services. They vote against development of more public transportation, which would reduce the cost of living and make employment and services more accessible for everyone. They're anti "welfare," which elderly, sick, unemployed, and others need. They're obsessed with black people not having anything to the point that they will vote against their own interests to prevent it. There are white people with major health problems who cannot work that are losing access to healthcare, food, and housing benefits because they voted for Trump. Toni Morrison talks about the deleterious effect of the profound psychosis known as racism. This is one of the motivations behind these behaviors. Some of it is probably also their neanderthal DNA. ETA: They vote against the 1% paying taxes, which would probably clear all of America's debt and finance a bunch of stuff the country desperately needs. |

FSBoperator:What you are trying to have us believe by way of this biased review of the Tipping culture, which existed in Europe prior to it being introduced in America, also had to do with Post-civil War issues in America? ![]() |

HacheNoire:And in same US, prostitution is considered a vice and is illegal but it is an artistic expression and free speech if you film yourself getting paid to have sex with someone.and have it distributed . It is Ok for same sex couples to marry but it is highly illegal to have more than one wife. It is considered illegal in many parts of America to be seen walking.on the streets- they call it Jay walking. You will be jailed in America if you don't walk your dog . It's ok in America to walk stark n@ked on the streets and engage in homosexual acts in broad daylight as long as it's a gay pride parade but it's considered offensive if you preach the bible on the streets. America is fck up . |

Kobojunkie:Actually, tipping has been a culture in the USA for 100+ years. But you are absolutely right - its not about Trump. |

Cousin9999:I bet no Nigerian who actually lives in America will agree with you. Just like visiting WC fans are surprised what a wonderful country US is! Omoawoke:A Nigerian will be trying to bargain to pay less than the cost, talkless of tipping! ![]() But this French guy below can't praise America enough and explains why tip. The English guy says "They are simply better!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwCihBXYIlk?is=TAbN7sA36hRuaxD4

FSBoperator:The one spewing trash here is you. People must work; that is fine. ![]() I am sorry, but that is nonsense! Part of deciding what job to take includes deciding whether the pay is right for you. ![]() |
| Re: World Cup Fans Frustrated By 'confusing And Expensive' Tipping Culture In US by Kobojunkie: 12:50am On Jun 29 |
FSBoperator:Look, the bottom line is that companies have the right to choose the pay model they think best suits their business needs. If you don't like the pay, leave the job and find yourself some place else that would pay you what you would prefer. That is common sense! ![]() |

Kobojunkie:It's an employer's market and not a would-be employee's. The employer has the last say on who to employ . Don't make it seem that the average person gets to freely choose the jobs they want. It's all down to making a living towards paying bills and having income to sustain yourself and given that one has to go job hunting, the choices are scarce and in-between and depends on whose hiring and what they are looking for in an employee. If it's down to choice of the employee , why do we have so many unemployed people ? Or are you saying those unemployed chose to remain unemployed and broke ? Guy fck outta here. |
| Re: World Cup Fans Frustrated By 'confusing And Expensive' Tipping Culture In US by FSBoperator: 12:56am On Jun 29*. Modified: 1:24am On Jun 29 |
Kobojunkie:No. Companies don't have the choice to pay whatever they think is fair to themselves. Companies must abide by labour and employment regulations and payment guidelines. That's why there is minimum wage , OSHA regulations , limits on working hours - 40hrs a week with weekends and public holidays off plus benefit payments that include vacation periods. This is the 21st century and not some Dickinson Work House era. |

FSBoperator:Employer's market? The employer decides the most qualified candidate for the job out of many potential candidates. That doesn't make it an Employer's market but rather a job market. You don't get to mark yourself some sort of victim because you didn't get the job. That's not how it works. ![]() 2. You can always start your own business and pay yourself and your employees in any other legal way out there. What you don't get to do is decide for everyone else how it should always have to be. ![]() |

Just like bolt and Uber when you want to pay after a trip , there's an option for tipping the driver. But our restaurants are already doing it here with service charge. |

I really dislike the way these BBC folks like to sensationalize their stories. It has really become some sort of culture at their organization. The last lady that spoke in the video (as restated in the write-up), suggested that minimum wage for some servers is as low as $2 per hour, which is correct on the surface but not the entire story. The missing piece here is that employees within that wage band are entitled to the difference between legislated minimum wage and that $2 per hour from their employer, in the event that any extra tips earned (plus the $2/hr wage) does not result in total earnings that match or exceed the legislated minimum wage. Talk of being economical with the truth or selective journalism, smh. |

geezville86:Thanks for clarifying this, because it wouldn’t make sense that there is minimum wage law but then some people would be paid below that amount. |

FSBoperator:Wrong. I tip my lawn care guy, the service technician at the auto dealership, my housekeeper, and others. Matter of fact, many Americans do the same so no, the restaurant industry and strip clubs are not isolated when it comes to what you referred to as ‘this arrangement’. Also, waitstaff do not choose their jobs based on tax liability—they pay they share of taxes just like everyone else. |

Skydivine:The BBC is well aware of the rules that govern the tipping industry and labor as it is managed by the Department of Labor. * https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/fact-sheets/15-tipped-employees-flsa * https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/state/minimum-wage/tipped However, these and so many other articles from the BBC are presented in such a way as to brainwash the ignorant into believing that those who work these jobs are victims and individuals who are taken advantage of by employees, something that is far from the case. ![]() |
