Pacesetter123:Sir, your point is clear but some of it are generalized. In the US, no government employee whether it’s the airport worker or the police will ask you for tips. It could even lead to job termination. If you offer, believe me, you are setting yourself up for an arrest. Tips are mostly offered at privately owned businesses, especially in service oriented businesses. Not even in trading stores like supermarkets or grocery stores. It is unimaginable to hear anything about tips in places like Costco, Walmart, HEB , CVS or BJs. At these places mentioned, you would be surprised that even if you give out of good will, the employee will decline. That is the difference with what they do in Nigeria. |

lagonovo:Lol, i had to go check my dashboard and turns out it was 2021 sef. this was just 2 years after i started fiverr and i have never gotten tips talkless of something huge, i think because of the things i got exposed to and the good work. that was a 20% tip just like that before he gave me this job he asked if i was a christian and i said i'm not a church person, he then asked what i think about working for a gay person and company, and i told him i dont care. I still be Linus or Mba?

madridguy:You can't go to a restaurant for just a bottle of water. You'd rather go for a full meal. Most times you can't even get bottle water in restaurants, You'd rather get water from dispensers including drinks, so you can drink what size of cup you choose. In most restaurant in the US you can drink as much cups of drink and water as you want. |

Pacesetter123:1. What you have in Nigeria is not the same as this tipping culture, which is regulated in the U.S Department of Labor. 2. Basically, tipping culture in "Saner climes" is government-regulated, voluntary, and almost non-predatory compared to that which you find in Nigeria. ![]() 3. From your story, are we to guess that the lady in question is an employee of the supermarket and her job is to help carry baskets around? If that is the case, does the establishment implement a tipping system? Or did you just assume that maybe her pay depended on your tipping her for the time she spent following you around the store? I am not certain how you arrived at comparing that situation to the one in, say, the US. Or Canada. ![]() 4. Your point is moot! Again, tipping culture is not implemented by all businesses in the U.S. or Canada. For instance, you do not go to the hospital to tip your nurse or doctor; your mechanic, airport worker, or police do the same. In such cases, your "tips" may be considered taxable gifts or bribes. ![]() 5. Nigerian begging, or the "Oga, find me something, abeg!" culture is not the tipping culture we dey discuss for here! ![]() |

Kobojunkie:It is the same thing. Whether Nigeria, Canada or US, tipping or expectation of it after service rendered is still tipping. The begging you are talking about in your point 5 is not what we are talking about here too. That one is for politicians and their Loyalists or a policeman on the road. "Oga find me something,Oga your boys are loyal..oo,Oga I dey hail..oo" is not what we are talking about here. Those ones are not called tippings. The one I am talking about here is, you go a restaurant for instance, the server come to your and greeted you very politely, then begin to list what they have in their menu in a very courteous and snappy manner. because of how courteous she/he was , couple with the fact that you already know how meagre her salary might be, you just gifted her a little money or leave a balance of your bill for her out of appreciation for the nice services rendered. That is what we call tipping. Then in the case of the supermarket girl I was talking about, she is one of the staff there. They are like 4 or 5 in numbers and are found inside in different row of the half since it's a large supermarket.Their work there is to help customers identify the row they can quickly find some items if such a customer ask for it.They also help in bringing the goods from inner warehouse for a restock. So for her to help me carry the basket,it was just out of courtesy and good customer relations. It wasn't her statutory duty. So,I have to appreciate her voluntarily. And it is the same thing the article was saying about the tipping system in the US. In short, theirs was even more weird than some of Nigeria own. Like somebody buying a bottle of water in a shop and the sale girl ask you for a tip like one of the football fans was telling the BBC. So whether it is government regulated or not, serving in some certain establishment like Bar,Hotel, Supermarket,Banks, Airport, etc and asking, expecting or collecting a "gifts" after service is tipping no matter how look at it. And like I said earlier, tipping such class of workers is not bad. But what I will condemn is making it compulsory. It should be voluntary. |

Pacesetter123:This already tells me you are wrong, but you seem deadset on claiming that a legally defined voluntary tipping contract is the same as any random, unmetered, and unregulated notion of tipping, so no point. ![]() |

MadamDMadam:It's not compulsory, but it is good for the worker, since they are often paid below minimum wage with the assumption that they will be tipped by customers. Also, tipping well can improve your level of service if you are a repeat customer. It's important to keep in mind that tipping is what actually pays the staff serving you. |
