16 Records Broken So Far In The 2026 FIFA World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has already produced history. Below are 16 records that have been broken so far, covering both tournament milestones and individual achievements.

Tournament Records:
1. Most goals in a single edition with 177 goals already scored, surpassing the previous record of 172 in Qatar 2022.
2. Highest attendance in World Cup history with more than 3.6 million fans inside stadiums, breaking the record set in the United States in 1994.
3. Highest daily attendance with 281,000 spectators on June 17 across four matches.

Individual Records:
4. Lionel Messi became the highest goalscorer in World Cup history with 19 goals.
5. Lionel Messi is the first male player to feature in 6 World Cups.
6. Lionel Messi holds the record for most appearances (29) and most minutes played (2,490+).
7. Lionel Messi is the oldest player to score a hat trick at 38 years and 357 days.
8. Cristiano Ronaldo is the first male player to score in 6 different World Cups.
9. Cristiano Ronaldo has reached 25 World Cup appearances.
10. Kylian Mbappé has broken the French scoring record at the World Cup with 16 goals.
11. Kylian Mbappé has become France’s all-time top scorer with 58 goals.
12. Harry Kane has set a new record for England with 11 World Cup goals.
13. Luka Modrić at 40 years of age became the oldest player to provide an assist.
14. Luka Modrić and Ivan Perišić are the first Croatians with more than 20 World Cup starts.
15. Erling Haaland became Norway’s leading scorer at the World Cup with 4 goals.
16. Erling Haaland is the first Norwegian to score a brace in World Cup history.

The 2026 World Cup is a tournament of milestones. Established legends continue to extend their records, while younger stars are writing new chapters. The expanded format has brought more goals, more fans, and more history than ever before.

Which record do you think will still be broken before the end of the tournament?
I am not sure of these records - 10, 11, 12, 14, 15 and 16. Those are records for country/national level at the WC. Even Cape Verde players can boast of similar records for their country if we check am well well. We are not interested in such records. There is a Morrocan player who became the first African player to score in each of the 3 group stage games. That’s a record that should be on your list.

The only record I want is for 2 African countries to meet at a World cup and for Argentina to play Portugal make this goat matter end once and for all.
Portugal and Argentina can only meet in the Final......so it will be hard.

Hopefully japan gets a good bracket for 2030

Brazil in R32 is way too early for Japan.

Japan vs brazil is like a semi final match up which sadly happened in round 32.

Japan is still the strongest football team in whole Asia

What a tournament we are having.

215 goals in group stage alone - Highest goal per game since 1958.

Majority of goals scored in the final 15 minutes or so, which clearly shows - elemi lo ma last.

And the best is still to come....

Germany wasn't a shocker

... The real shocker is either of Netherlands or Norway ✈️ homeville next

That's a massive moment in this World Cup. The Netherlands had one foot in the next round, but they completely switched off at the worst possible time and Morocco punished them. That's what knockout football is all about
Re: Official FIFA World Cup 2026 Thread by 9JAMac10: 4:17am On Jun 30
If I was the Netherlands I’d put more pressure on the ball. Morocco aren’t trying to advance past half field and take any risks. They prefer penalties anyway. With low ball pressure, Morocco is benefiting from doing nothing
Re: Official FIFA World Cup 2026 Thread by 9JAMac10: 4:19am On Jun 30
Bart Verbruggen is the only reason Netherlands are still in this game. Morocco needs to be more clinical

Morroco is determining the game and calling the shots
Netherlands is at their mercy

genuinely hard to believe germany won the world cup in 2014 and every world cup since they have played absolutely dreadfully

We are heading to penalty kicks between Netherlands and Morocco in Monterrey after it finished 1-1 after. May the better side win

Morocco dey ball abeg. Best performance I have seen from an African side in a decade or more. No respect or fear. Play it all out in the field.

Netherlands out, earlier on Germany out. This world cup will not go as planned o. Massive congrats to Morrroco as they move on to the next round. Those pundits must put some respect to Africa's name this world cup.

And my question is, who in the world would prefer penalties given that penalties are unpredictable

This is a World Cup where goalies are proving just how pivotal they are.

The types of saves made and the mind games especially in penalty kicks is just outstanding .

It's been an incredible tournament so far.

Re: Official FIFA World Cup 2026 Thread by Reference(m): 5:24am On Jun 30
World cups traditionally held outside Europe does not favour Europeans. They generally don't just play well. I think Germany winning in 2014 was the only exception. France may do it due to the 'black' factor but I think it is Argentina's to lose....or even Brazil with the Ancelotti factor....who knows.

But spare a thought for the France of the old ages, (the country that started adopting nationals from its colonies into its team) a powerhouse of global soccer, a talent generator, the Netherlands or 'Neverlands'.... when, when, when....
