Popular Islamic Cleric: Christians & Traditional Worshippers Can Seek My Daughter's Hand In Marriage If They Have Good Character & They Can Provide For Her


In a viral post challenging Nigeria’s religious divides, Taoheed Abdulwasiu Mustapha, popularly known as TAOSAF, declared that Christians and traditional believers are welcome to ask for his daughter’s hand in marriage — as long as they have “good character” and “decent means of livelihood.”

“I’m a Muslim, but humanity is at the core of my values,” Mustapha wrote. “If you’re from a good family, have good character, and have a decent means of livelihood, you have my respect. I will support you.”

TAOSAF said he refuses “any interpretation of religion that teaches me to hate, despise, or attack people simply because they follow a different faith.” He added: “To me, humanity comes before religious differences.”

Taking aim at religious intolerance, he wrote: “Saudi Arabia eats and dine with Israel and America… What’s your own problem…? Nonsense.”

Unmoved by potential backlash, Mustapha told critics: “If my way of life doesn’t sit well with you, that’s your choice. Go and hug the transformer.” He insisted “no amount of criticism or threat to life will change my belief in treating people with dignity and respect.”

The post has since sparked wide debate online over interfaith marriage and tolerance in Nigeria.

And do not marry Al-Mushrikât (idolatresses, etc.) till they believe (worship Allâh Alone). And indeed a slave woman who believes is better than a (free) Mushrikah (idolatress), even though she pleases you. And give not (your daughters) in marriage to Al-Mushrikûn till they believe (in Allâh Alone) and verily, a believing slave is better than a (free) Mushrik (idolater), even though he pleases you. Those (Al-Mushrikûn) invite you to the Fire, but Allâh invites (you) to Paradise and Forgiveness by His Leave, and makes His Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) clear to mankind that they may remember.

Do not marry unbelieving women (idolaters), until they believe: A slave woman who believes is better than an unbelieving woman, even though she allures you. Nor marry (your girls) to unbelievers until they believe: A man slave who believes is better than an unbeliever, even though he allures you. Unbelievers do (but) beckon you to the Fire. Focus should be on good character and ability to take good care of her and kids, but we are in the world where we carry religion on head, yet doing opposite what religion command us to be doing.
