State police is a right step but it will not be enough

It is only a full decentralization of security that will suffice. Local governments and the private sector should also be allowed to join the fray. This is mainly because some governors are compromised and may prove to be as bad if not worse than the federal government so far dealing with crimes and the protection of people are concerned. People who can afford to use other means to protect themselves should be allowed to do so

There is market in the country for security and at least fifty thousand police men and other men from other security institutions do guard duties for private individuals and companies. I believe it does not cost less than one hundred and fifty thousand naira per man per month. There is no reason a duly registered vigilante group should not be allowed to bear military grade weapons. Farming villages that pay fifty million naira frequently to bandits actually can protect themselves if their vigilante groups are allowed to be properly armed and even put under the police

To have peace, you need to also prepare for war. State police is good but things have gone too far south that it will almost certainly prove to be not enough especially in Northern Nigeria

Let's start somewhere though.

It is easy to say, give powerful arms like AK 47 to local vigilantes and private security companies.

The result will be disastrous for Nigeria.

Many of those powerful arms will end up in the wrong civilian hands. Armed robbery will explode. Kidnapping and terrorism will become worse.

Give it a few years, the violence in the country will be several times worse than it is today, and civil war will be just around the corner.

The best thing is to leave powerful arms in the hands of the police (State and Federal) where there will still be a modicum of monitoring of which officer handles what ammunition.

You're very much correct. What is worth doing is worth doing well. Even the state police they're proposing is not what a state police should be. What a country!

I personally I don't like the idea of the state police. I know our governors will only fill it with their loyalist and their political thugs.

So a registered vigilante group with visible leadership structure will be involved in armed robberies? Even if possible, they should go ahead as the people they are planning to rob are also waiting for them.
