https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKRS-3bjRCI The recent exchange between former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and the Minister of Works, David Umahi, has reignited public debate over Nigeria's infrastructure priorities and the role of opposition politics in a democratic society. The controversy began after Obi criticized the Federal Government's approach to road development, arguing that priority should be given to rehabilitating existing highways before embarking on new road construction projects. Using the Asaba–Benin Road as an example, Obi described the highway as one of Nigeria's most strategic transport corridors, connecting several states in the South-South, South-East, and parts of the North-Central to Lagos. According to him, the deplorable condition of the road has become a major source of hardship for commuters, transporters, and businesses. "There is a pertinent reason I have consistently advocated that we should refrain from initiating new road construction projects until we have thoroughly rehabilitated and maintained our existing road network," Obi said. He argued that many of Nigeria's existing highways remain in poor condition despite their economic importance and urged the government to focus on repairing critical infrastructure before announcing additional road projects. Umahi Defends Government's Strategy Responding to the criticism, Minister of Works David Umahi defended the Federal Government's infrastructure policy, insisting that Nigeria cannot afford to suspend new road construction simply because existing roads require repairs. Umahi maintained that the administration's strategy is to simultaneously rehabilitate aging infrastructure while expanding the country's road network to meet growing economic and population demands. Supporters of the government pointed to several recently approved infrastructure projects, including road rehabilitation works and new highway developments across multiple states, arguing that addressing Nigeria's decades-long infrastructure deficit requires a multi-pronged approach rather than an either-or strategy. Broader Debate on Infrastructure Priorities The exchange has generated mixed reactions among Nigerians. Some observers agree with Obi's position, arguing that fixing heavily used federal highways should take precedence over launching new projects. Others believe that limiting government to rehabilitation alone could delay development in underserved communities that have long lacked quality road infrastructure. Analysts note that Nigeria's infrastructure challenges are extensive, with many federal roads requiring urgent maintenance while numerous regions continue to demand new transport links to stimulate economic growth. Opposition Politics Under the Spotlight Beyond the disagreement over road construction, the exchange has also sparked wider conversations about the nature of opposition politics in Nigeria. Political analysts argue that effective opposition plays a crucial role in democratic governance by scrutinizing government policies, identifying shortcomings, and proposing alternative solutions. They note that constructive criticism can strengthen public accountability while encouraging better policy implementation. Similarly, they emphasize that governments should respond to criticism with facts, transparency, and measurable progress rather than political rhetoric. Calls for Accountability Experts say the focus should ultimately remain on ensuring that infrastructure projects are completed on schedule, delivered within budget, and built to acceptable engineering standards. They argue that regardless of political affiliation, Nigerians stand to benefit when government performance is measured by tangible outcomes, including safer highways, reduced travel times, and improved economic connectivity. As discussions continue, the exchange between Obi and Umahi has highlighted broader questions about infrastructure development, public accountability, and the responsibilities of both government and opposition in strengthening Nigeria's democracy. Whether the priority should be repairing existing roads first or pursuing rehabilitation alongside new construction remains a subject of public debate, but many observers agree that sustained investment, transparency, and effective execution will be key to addressing Nigeria's longstanding infrastructure challenges.

What is the use of building super expensive highways when the lives of the citizens is hard with unprecedented insecurity, hardship, inflation, low purchasing power etc while the govt is living in brazen opulence? |

If they don’t build new roads, how will his minions name “legacy projects” of their master after he’s done with his tenure? The coastal road they celebrated is fast becoming a problem to the people who live along that axis because it has caused obstructions for water flows. |

helinues:It seems Peter Obi does not know that there is an agency of government called Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), in charge of daily repair and rehabilitation of all federal roads nationwide. Little wonder he said he couldn’t know the problems of Nigeria until he became the President. There is no sense in waiting to complete the repair and rehabilitation of all damaged roads before starting to construct new ones because the need for repair is continuous. It’s like placing a nationwide ban on the birth of new babies until all sick patients in hospitals are treated and discharged, but new patients continue to report to hospitals for treatment on daily basis. |

Professor in practice can say anything to defend his pay master. So many federal roads are not motorable but building super highway is now a priority. |
