A single overdose of legally bought alcohol can result in the death of a drinker, while there is not one single overdose death that has been attributed to cannabis on record anywhere in the world. Likewise, cigarettes contain nicotine, which is among the deadliest poisons known to man. Concurrently with the end of cannabis prohibition in Nigeria, the growing and sale of cannabis must be removed from the hands of criminals who often add toxic chemicals to their product to make it more addictive and potent. This is an important point you have raised about legalized cannabis regulation because in South Africa, for example, small time farmers have not been able to afford the astronomical fees charged for commercialized cannabis production, which is dominated by huge corporations and overseas investors. This mistake of making legal cannabis production so costly, will diminish the economic benefits of the entire program, by excluding much of the populace from opportunities to become stakeholders in the new cannabis economy.

Six long months ago, in December 2025, the Always Mighty NDLEA boss General Marwa tasked the Nigerian legislature with the assignment of drafting a new legal framework that would usher in an era of economic rejuvenation for Nigeria by legalizing the cultivation, processing and export of medical marijuana.

Hopefully this completed document can be referenced by Nigeria's lawmakers so that the task of creating an analogous document for Nigeria can be simplified and expedited.

The introduction of cannabis agriculture and processing for export will usher in an economic boom in Nigeria that will rival the oil industry for revenue generation amounting to billions of dollars annually. Nigerian legislators, the ball is in your court, and NDLEA boss Marwa is awaiting your action on the directive that he gave you last year. The laxity of the lawmakers towards this golden opportunity is just baffling. Each one of them draws a salary that is higher than the US president's official salary, so they are all wealthy enough to invest few thousand dollars in Nigeria's new cannabis industry, with the assurance that profits will accrue on such a scale that they will all become dollar millionaires in a year or less.

By looking at South Africa's legislation as a guideline, it should take no more than one calendar month for a competent lawyer to adapt and fine-tune the South African model of cannabis legalization legislature, so that it is applicable to Nigeria's legal framework.

Our law makers are being unnecessarily slow in coming up with the legislation they have been directed to draft, but it is certain that the momentum is in favor of legalization soon, whereby simply applying for a government permit, and complying with the relevant conditions, will open the door to the creation of great wealth for all Nigerians with access to fertile farmland.
